Do Gender-Neutral Gifts Still Elude Parents?

Given the noise over a toy company's "gender neutral" images of Nerf-gun-wielding girls and doll-clutching boys, how much have things really changed in the 40 years since "Free to Be You and Me"?

A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import! In 1962 Stan Lee created the character of Spider-Man, the teen aged Peter Parker granted extraordinary powers by the bite of a radioactive spider. With great power comes great responsibility, and Spider-Man would use that power to save lives and protect the innocent. The innovative superhero would go on to become [...]

Get your Hobbit on with the latest Lego sets

Get your Hobbit on with the latest Lego sets screenshot

Possibly one of Lego's biggest franchise tie-ins yet, there's no end in sight for the popularity of Lego Lord of the Rings and, naturally, related kits (and games, no doubt!). Of course that includes cashing in on the upcoming Hobbit release, and those of you eagerly awaiting the newer sets can rest easy thanks to Amazon.

A few are available now, including "An Unexpected Gathering", "Escape from Mirkwood Spiders", and "Riddles for the Ring", all featuring the sorts of wonderfully crafted surroundings and minifigs you've come to expect by now. While all of the sets certainly have their own appeal, I'm particularly fond of the Shire, looking just fantastic and unmistakable in miniature.

I'll be honest--I've never read the books and only seen the movies for the first time this past week at a certain someone's behest, but I'm certainly interested enough to be keeping an eye on these myself!

While the Holley Shiftwell with Screen seems like a nice new addition … It’s actually super nice – thanks for the open photos, “John H.” They could’ve taken the lazy route and just slapped up a blue piece of plastic and said, “well, the screen is off,” but instead, they actually imprinted the actual scene [...]

Amazing transforming RC robot does all the work for you screenshot

If you're into Transformers and similar transforming robot toys you know the fun is all in going from one form to the other. But if the robot does all of that on its own that's pretty freaking awesome, too, right? Kenji Ishida sure thinks so and is ready to unleash his latest creation, 'Transformer Version 7.2' robot, out into the public. Only 10 of these are being produced, entirely made to order using Kenji's custom made 3D printer, allowing buyers to choose what color their own bot will be made in.

No price is given, potential buyers need to contact Kenji for a quote, but they'll be fully loaded. Each bot comes with a numbered case, wireless controller, batteries with charger, motion-editing software, and a cable. Each bot will completely transform on its own from car to bot mode, be able to drive like a normal RC car, walk (more like a shuffle), fire both fists, and perform various motions and poses that can be programmed in. So what's in the future? Version 8 was revealed in video back in May and he says by 2030 he plans to make a 1/1 scale drivable version. He'll have 7.2 on display this weekend at Maker Faire Tokyo.

Follow the jump to see a video of the 7.2 version in action and a second video showing the development process from version 1 to 7.2.

Retro Japan

I've always been interested in the Showa period which lasted from 1926 through 1989. Probably the biggest era of change for Japan.
Had the pleasure of visiting a toy store in Asakusa called Kusou Zakka - a spot in Tokyo where time stands still in the Showa period.

The shop is located in a residential area and if it wasn't for the sign that's displayed outside during opening hours, one would be hard pushed to find it.
The closest stations are Iriya and Asakusa - map here > http://ow.ly/2jlpJ
Address: 東京都台東区千束2-30-1
Tel: (03)3872-1166

They open at 11 and close at 7.

Closed on Tuesdays.

Went along with the Kira Kira film crew.

This is Kamiya-san - an expert on the Showa Period who has also been involved in overseeing the sets for films like Always - a load of Japanese Showa history to be had - includes the gorgeous Maki Horikita too.

Toy technology of the past and today - about 40 years difference here.

During the Showa period, materials were scarce in Japan so makers like Tamiya used wood for some of the parts in their models like this one of the battleship Atago.
The ironic thing was that many Japanese families couldn't afford to buy such luxury toys and most of the sales were generated from overseas customers - which is why you see English printed on the box.

Another example of how scarce materials were in Japan at the time. Many toys were made of recycled material like this ticket puncher.
Now we have automated ticket barriers but all tickets were punched back then which lead to very crowded stations like this one.

And here are the tickets - the words "Children's Railways" printed on the right of the ticket.

Kusou Zakka is an incredible place - not only is it packed with toys from the Showa Period, the shelving is also from the same period too.

The shop even has an old nostalgic smell too. I've always wanted to be able to step back in time to the Showa Period with a camera and it looks like I reached my time traveling goal this week.

Kamiya-san is a delightful man to talk to who is full of knowledge to share. He also does a load of consulting on his subject of specialty too. Another example of somebody who has been able to make a living from his passion.

What characters are you familiar with that you can spot in this shop?

Me still got a few Star Wars figures from the late 70's - all unboxed though. What sort of retro figures do you have stashed at home?

Next up as part of the Kira Kira filming is a toy shop from the Showa period which is currently filled with modern day toys - Kiddy Land in Harajuku.

Good Smile reveals a Nendoroid 300 Commemoration Campaign

Good Smile reveals a Nendoroid 300 Commemoration Campaign screenshot

The Nendoroid series has been going for almost 7 years now, and Good Smile closing in on 300 Nendoroids in the line. That's a lot of plastic. To celebrate the occasion, Good Smile has set up a special page for a commemorative event that will include a special Nico Nico Douga broadcast on Dec. 15 with the reveal of number 300 and more.

The big news, though, is they're doing a quiz contest ... show ... thing. I think that's the best way to describe it. There's three different quizzes you can take now on the special event page: Practice, Enjoy, and Expert Courses, with each course being more difficult. Completing the Enjoy Course gets you a digital Gumako prize, while beating the Expert Course (and doing really well on it) might get you an invite to the Nendoroid Quiz finals in Akihabara. Good Smile will invite the top 3 scorers to the event and the winner gets an original Nendoroid trophy and a half-year of Nendoroid releases! The bad news for us is you can only enter if you live in Japan for the contest ... but you can still take the quizzes as often as you'd like for the heck of it.

We'll have more info as it becomes available ... but what do you think Nendoroid number 300 will be, Tomopop readers? My wild guess is a Saber x Miku crossover, because we all know how much love those two have gotten from Good Smile before ... right?
