The New Gene: Phoenix

$

Here is her picture courtesy of Angelic Dreamz. She comes with two rooted wig caps and a plain cap for using with your own wigs. I haven't had a minute alone with my own doll to take pictures.
It is really Gene! A dream come true for Gene collectors although the price point may be a nightmare for some. It's better to have one gorgeous, high quality doll than 4 or five who will yellow. (At least that's what I tell myself.)
Phoenix Gene will be able to wear all earlier Gene clothes.

The price pre-ordered was $525. The on-line price for May delivery was $550. I was told that the entire edition of 150 sold out shortly after the additional 50, not reserved for event attendees, were posted for sale.

With less than 24hours to go for his Kickstarter campaign, to which Nate Mitchell laments:
"..it officially ends at 2pm on Sunday. We're about 50 bucks away from our 1st Stretch Goal of 17,500. I was really hoping to make it to 20k and make prints of each label, but that's looking unlikely at this point."

ToyCon 2013 / My Stand

TOYSREVIL: How was ToyConUK for you? Your impressions? Was it what you expected it to be?

CRIS ROSE: ToyCon was a very friendly event indeed, lots of enthusiasm, everyone was very busy indeed and put on a good show of work. It certainly took a lot of time in the run up, for myself and most i spoke to, but those attending seemed to appreciate it. It was what i expected it to be, but as it was the first yeah, i had quite realistic expectations. It was lovely to meet fans, and new collectors alike, and of course, those awesome artists i hadn't already been able to meet.

TOYSREVIL: Tell us what you had on your table! And which of your items had the warmest reception / best response?

CRIS ROSE: I had over 70 bots on my store, plenty of sprogs, custom androids, PTV dioramas, a couple of custom teeters, but i mainly focused on my original bots.  A lot of interest was paid to the Arborobots (with Pepe) in particular, sales wise, nothing really performed exceptionally better than any other, it was quite evenly favoured, which is nice.

TOYSREVIL: Any suggestions to make the event even more awesome in the future?

CRIS ROSE: Anything I'd suggest for next year, is already being taken into account by the organisers :) So instead i'll suggest to those attending 2014 - bring more money!! That would make it awesomer for everyone indeed ;)

My Flowers and Hummingbird Cross-Stitch Picture

$

This winter proved to be a particularly productive season for me as far as my cross-stitch creations were concerned as I was able to finish 5 of the cross-stitch kits I had previously purchased.   In total I spent 200 hours creating my  5 cross-stitch pictures but it was well worth it.  That amounts to a few hours a day over 70 days or so.  Enough to cover the winter season.

The cross-stitch kit I just finished was a counted cross-stitch kit from Dimensions The Gold Collection Petites entitled Flowers and Hummingbird.  Like the other Dimensions Gold Collection kits I had bought the Flowers and Hummingbird Cross-Stitch Kit - Dimensions The Gold Collection Petites kit included the pattern, pre-sorted cotton thread, 18 count ivory cotton Aida, needle and instructions.

The Flowers and Hummingbird pattern uses full counted cross-stitch, half cross-stitch and outline stitching for emphasis and depth and this detailing really makes the picture stand out. The design of this cross-stitch gives the finished picture a 3 dimensional aspect with the half cross stitch and outlining being used for artistic effect.

The pattern came with starting, stitching, finishing and even cleaning instructions as well as samples of the various stitches required, and color coded keys (with code #'s, lengths, color names, and cross-stitch symbols) and a chart with color coded symbols. The colors and symbols on the keys and chart were easy to read and follow.

While I was very pleased with the end results of this design there are some things in the kit and in the instructions that can be improved upon.

As was the case with previous Dimensions kits the thread sorter was poorly designed. The embroidery threads were glued to two foam backed 6" by 1 1/4" strips of cardboard that had a picture of the color of the thread and it's number. In order to get to the threads you had to separate the foam back from the cardboard strip. Very quickly the threads separated from their section and then you no longer knew what the thread number was to tie to your symbols & legends. I had to punch a hole in the thread sorter cardboard strip just below the color of the thread & it's number and then insert the threads through the hole and tie them in a loose knot so my threads, colors, and numbers would stay together.

I also added the symbols to the strip to make reading the chart easier.  To make things even easier for the user the color symbol should have been shown on the thread sorter strip of cardboard as well. That way you would only need to use the thread sorter strip of cardboard to follow your chart.

The Flowers and Hummingbird  kit creates a 5" by 7" hydrangea picture using the 18 count ivory cotton Aida cloth which was included in the kit.  However, the piece wouldn't fit into the 10" round embroidery hoop that I wanted to use so I could cross-stitch the whole 5" by 7" picture without having to move the cloth within the hoop or create creases in my picture from the hoop.  I could have used a smaller hoop but that would have required moving the cloth within the hoop which would create creases where the hoop was.  I hate that as no matter how hard you try it is very difficult ironing out creases caused by embroidery hoops.

So, I decided to sew cloth strips to the edges of  my cloth so it would easily fit within my 10" round embroidery frame as shown in the picture below:

The kit should have included a  larger piece of the 18 count ivory cotton Aida cloth in order to avoid this problem.

The finishing calls for centering your design on a 5" by 7" piece of cardboard and folding the excess fabric around the cardboard and mitering the corners.  As I as going to put my picture in an 8"  by 10" double matted frame I decided to mount my picture on an 8" by 10" press and seal board that I would fit the inside of my frame.

I had chosen a white frame with royal blue and cream double matting to finish it which I think really brought out the beautiful colors of the flowers and white color of the houses clapboard.  Plus the double matting allowed for enough room for the press and seal adhesive board that I was using to mount my finished cross-stitch.

It took me 50 hours to complete this picture including the framing.  Despite the problems I encountered with the thread sorter and Aida cloth I was very happy with the way my Flowers and Hummingbird Cross-Stitch turned out.

Mel Odom unveils a new Gene Marshall doll at IDEX 2013 - Phoenix

$

Mel Odom is a living legend in the fashion doll world. His Gene Marshall doll actually established the niche, when it first came out back in 1995. It was Aston Drake that manufactured the dolls then, and quickly Gene was a collector's favourite. Years later, in 2005, Gene and Mel moved on to Integrity Toys. Gene was improved in many ways and the flame kept on for a while until, again, the life cycle of the doll came to an end in 2010.

Now Gene is back, in her third incarnation, a Phoenix (the doll's name) rising from the ashes. Mel collaborates with JAMIEshow to bring us a mew Gene, as a resin BJD (ball-jointed-doll) in a very limited edition. So limited in fact that the doll is sold out. There was 100 dolls ready for sale at IDEX, where she was presented in a special event by Mel himself. another 50 dolls were available on-line after the presentation at the JAMIEshow website but no more. These 50 will be ready to ship in early May.

The doll looks a lot like the Gene we know and love, maybe a bit softer. She is a 16" ball-jointed resin doll, with an interchangeable rooted wig cap system (hence the different hairstyles and colours you see in the photos). She is dressed in a powder blue silk gown, wearing gloves and special gloved hands. She comes with an extra pair of regular skin tone hands as well. Her accessories include a blue Swarovski pendant necklace, earrings, and a bracelet; blue matching shoes; an adjustable JAMIEshow stand; and two rooted wig caps in differing styles and colours, one platinum short cut and another brown chignon, as well as a hard wig cap so she can wear standard doll wigs. She is a collaborative effort designed by Mel Odom and JAMIEshow, with the dress designed by Maddie Rose Couture.

The doll looks amazing, a gorgeous Gene to be added to all the rest. It is very expensive but so are most resin dolls at her size and quality and edition. I love the dress, fabric and colour are exquisite. I would like to see the hands up close to see how they look in their gloved version. Welcome back Gene and Mel, we missed you!

Rejoice! ¥100 is now equal to US$1

For those who have been collecting for some time, you remember the good ol' days of ¥120 to US$1. Those days then turned to ¥100 to the Dollar and it was just okay. Then there's an economic apocalypse that happened and the rate spiraled further downwards. The abyss became despair, and at one point, we nearly hit the 60s in the exchange rate. Thankfully, those days are gone and the past is coming back once again. The Yen is finally achieving parity with the US Dollar.

As of posting, the exchange rate is now at ¥100 to US$1.01. It had been hovering at the 99-cent mark for most of last week, but is now at the magical mark of US$1. The mark is largely symbolic as purchasing power hadn't really changed over time. When the Dollar was at its peak against the Yen in 2007, shopping outlets charged retail prices for goods. With today's discounts found on just about all goods, prices are essentially the same. We got too hung up about the current exchange rate, which actually enabled the environment to allow those shops to offer said discounts.

With today's market and the increased competition driving down prices, a weakening Yen is a blessing. With tax day looming tomorrow, hopefully you have some money coming back your way. What better way to stimulate the economy than to buy things from other countries?

Rejoice! ¥100 is now equal to US$1 screenshot
