SDCC 2016: Bluefin

Bluefin distributes figures from a variety of Japanese companies, so their booth featured toys catering to all corners of fandom. Their most elaborate display was for the classic Ghostbusters, featuring two scenes from the end of the film.

I enjoyed some of the figures that were off the beaten path. I mean, it's great that they (like everyone else) had a ton of DC movieverse stuff. But how many booths are rocking Fight Club figures? Who else has Marilyn Monroe?

Topping everything else, though, was the 1/6-scale Tony Jaa as seen in Ong Bak. Tony Jaa is simply the greatest, so I freaked out a bit when I saw the prototype from Storm Collectibles.

There's lots more in the gallery, mostly of upcoming figures. Bluefin had everything from Aliens to Dragon Ball Z so be sure to have a look.

SDCC 2016: Tamashii Nations

Have you ever wished your Toy Story figures could also be Transformers? Well Tamashii Nations has you covered with a line they're calling Cho Gattai Toy Story. These figures can transform and even combine together to form a super mecha! I love everything about this idea, but the best part is the amazing Japanese commercial for this series.

Other new figures include their WWE lineup, which will be joined by Triple H. We've all seen Bandai's samurai Star Wars figures, but they're expanding that lineup now by adding Spider Man into the mix. I also liked the display with the animated Ninja Turtles and Shredder.

The rest is captured in the gallery, take a look and let us know what you think!

REVIEW: June 2016 Loot Crate – Dystopian

I might be a little behind in my June 2016 Loot Crate review, but it’s likely due to the fact that last month’s theme was all things Dystopian. It was chocked full of pop culture goodness from a number of cult classic films some might describe as dystopian. RoboCop, The Matrix, and Terminator 2 represented […] Read more

Wonder Festival 2016 Summer: Kotobukiya

With Wonder Festival happening around the same time as SDCC, it should be no surprise that a company with a booth at both events would have a lot of overlap in what they were showing off. Such is the case with Kotobukiya.

Tian has already written up what was on display at the SDCC event so I'll skip over the big announcements like the Bishoujo Squirrel girl and the new ikemen line but that doesn't mean that Koto had nothing new to show at wonder festival. At the every least, they showed off a figure of Sanzo from Saiyuki Reload (remember that show?) as well as more pokemon figures. However, of more interest would be a look at the prototype for Velvet from Tales of Berseria (SDCC just had a placeholder) and announcements for figures from a Light Novel called Clockwork Planet. It was recently announced that the title will have an anime adaptation, which is probably why the figures are being announced now. The two characters on the placeholders are Ryuzu and Anchor. Those two should in interesting to see how they turn out. Clockwork Planet is a pretty decent read too. Hopefully, the anime adaptation won't be terrible.

On the plamodel side, things get a little interesting. It seems that Kotobukiya will be resurrecting the long defunct Busou Shinki line by producing them as model kits. They have shown off Arnval and Straff so here's hoping that Altlene and Altines will be next! Otherwise, there was a lot of focus on extra parts and weapons for the Frame Arts line (and, by extension, the Frame Arms: Girl line too) but there were also a few new Frame Arms kits and new Frame Arms: Girls. I recently built my first FA;G the other day and I have to admit that it didn't really grab me as I had hoped but that new one looks really nice!

Continuing our catchup on coverage of this weekend's Wonderfest, we have a collection of photos showing the Transformers Adventure toys on display. The electronic Hypersurge Starscream was a big presence, but the first looks at TakaraTomy's deco for Warrior Class Windblade and Ratchet may have attracted the most attention. We've got images of both of those, plus lots more, so keep reading to take a look!

Finally for the moment we're looking at the Legends Series display from Summer Wonderfest. TakaraTomy's Titans Return lineup is well represented, going all the way to October's releases - if not a bit farther with the Super Ginrai prototype. Among the photos we get good looks at the retooled faces for Chromedome, Mindwipe, and Highbrow, plus reminders just how nice the decos are for Scourge and Blurr, and plenty more! We've got a lot of photos of this table, so keep reading to start browsing the gallery.

Wonder Festival 2016 Summer: Takara Tomy

There was a time when Takara Tomy didn't seem to really notice Wonder Festival, instead choosing to display at bigger events like the Tokyo Toy Show. But as they continue to focus more and more on the collectors market their presence at Wonder Festival keeps getting bigger. This time around they seem to have their biggest display yet, though their focus is most definitely on nostalgic guys with some money to burn.

Of course the first stop at their display has to be the Transformers. The centerpiece this time around is probably Masterpiece Cheetor from Beast Wars, the second figure from the CG animated series to get the MP treatment after Optimus Primal coming later this year. We've seen him unpainted before, but our first look at him in full color is nothing short of phenomenal! Check out those cartoon accurate cheetah faces and that gun. This is going to be one heck of a cool figure that a lot of people are looking forward to, maybe even more than Primal. G1 Inferno was also on display, but unpainted so I'll point you towards a previous article instead.

For other Transformers goodies they also had the latest from both Legends (the line that will be offering their version of the Titans Return figures) and Adventures (their version of Robots in Disguise). While for the most part Takara Tomy at Hasbro are offering the same characters, the figures are a little bit different. The Legends figures all feature new heads and decos based on the Japan-only Headmasters cartoon. The figure to get the biggest change is Super Ginrai when compared to Hasbro's Powermaster Optimus Prime which features a new regular Ginrai head inside the bigger Super Ginrai head, and even more so a new truck cab/chest, new forearms and fists, new hips, new feet, and some new guns. The Adventures figures aren't as extensively worked over, but they do have new paint apps that are closer to the cartoon.

Moving slightly over we've got the Transformers granddaddy, Diaclone. It looks like TT has decided to go all out on their revamped Diaclone line by adding lots of mini human figures in armor and little mecha and vehicles for them to run around in. If you're into lines that you can army build the hell out of then this is definitely one to watch.

Shifting gears it would seem Takara Tomy is ramping up their hanging accessories. They're offering a rather large selection of rubber straps, key chains, charms and whatever else you can hang off your phone or bag. Looks like most of it comes from the various Pretty Rhythm spin-offs including the most recent King of Prism by PrettyRhythm, but I recognize a couple others in there.

Finally they had a rather extensive display of Star Wars: The Force Awakens figures and vehicles. Not a whole lot to be said about these since I'm fairly sure a lot of these have been released already, but it still makes for a rather impressive display. Also on display are a few Thunderbolts items and a new line of kid-friendly mini robots and playsets that I don't recognize.

All in all a great showing for Takara Tomy. AmiAmi posted a huge image gallery, but you can find a selection of pics mirrored in our gallery below.

Before there was Transformers, there was Diaclone, and we'd be remiss if we didn't talk at least a little about the new Diaclone Reboot merchandise on display at Wonderfest yesterday. On hand were representatives of the pilot troop builder packs (some of which are already up for preorder!), the power suits (types A and B likewise up for order), as well as a prototype for a transport vehicle for the power suits. Diabattles also showed off an upgrade unit giving boosters and giant cannons, as if Diabattles V2 wasn't armed enough! It's a lot of great looking stuff, so click through to check it all out!
