Thanks to the Japanese Radio Kaikan website we have some new photos of Mega Drive Megatron and Original Playstation Optimus Prime! Transformers Expo 2014 reveals MP Star Saber in color
Last Weekend in Japan was Transformers Expo, more or less the equivalent to BotCon in the US. They were a little light on the announcements this year, not giving away any real plans for upcoming figures past what's been previously announced and no real insight into what they have new planned for 2015. Nevertheless, the big draw was a first time look at Takara Tomy's upcoming Masterpiece Star Saber in full color! Despite showing off some prototype shots in magazines Takara has bee fairly quiet about what makes this figure worthy of being called a Masterpiece until now.
With his new display we now know this is a full-on remake of the original figure first released in Japan in 1989. As Autobot Supreme Commander he is also a Brainmaster, a type of Transformer that was never released in the US which is similar to a headmaster. With Brainmasters a small figure is placed in a larger figure's chest and then slid up into the head to reveals the character's face. In this case it's the Brain of Courage that is placed in the smaller robot Saber's chest. Saber then can combine with the Z-Star in both spacecraft mode or bot mode to form Star Saber. As Star Saber he can wear a red battle helmet that looks a bit like Optimus Prime. The unpainted prototype on display also shows that you can put the Brain of Courage inside Saber's cockpit.
I can't wait to get my hands on him. The original figure is pretty rare and never saw a reissue so for most of us this is our first real chance at a figure of the character that does the original justice. It looks like Star Saber will be pretty similar in size to Ultra Magnus, but probably cost more. I just hope they're nice enough to also make a Victory Leo figure so we can go all out and form Victory Saber. Some spots noticed on the prototype seem to indicate yes so don't let us down!
Also on display were a bunch of early Transformers prototypes including resin models of the original Rodimus Prime, Wheelie, and a very small Unicron as well as a brown, fuzzy flocked Optimus Primal from Beast Wars among several other things. They also displayed the actual molds used to make G1 Optimus Prime.
