Snow Miku 2016 is all about the winter sports

What's this? It's finally starting to look like spring around here and I have to think about winter again!? I guess if it's for a new Snow Miku design I'll let it slide. Slide... heh. Anyway, it's time to start thinking about next year's Snow Miku design and the theme has been revealed: "Winter Sports Enjoyed in Hokkaido".

When this was first announced I saw a number of people ask for Hockey Miku, which is pretty amusing. However I think we'll be seeing something a little more flattering, like Ice Skater Miku (a figure skater figure?). However, nothing would make me happier than if the winning design was Curling Miku; nobody would see that coming! They're also keeping her little rabbit friend Yukine around for another year so it'll get a new design as well.

Entry info can be found on the Piapro website (in Japanese). The deadline is May 11 so you've got a little over three weeks to get an entry in. Voting will begin soon after that at the end of the month on NicoNico.

Hmm, maybe Curling Teto would be better...

Top selling toys in Japan for week of 4/6 to 4/12

This week supported two known facts: trading card games and Gundam are insanely popular in Japan. To say it was a great week for either, especially Gundam, might be an understatement. There are only three new items this week, the rest is a jumble of ol' regulars.

Let's check them out:

Overall

  1. (New) Yo-Kai Watch Yo-Kai Medal Season 5 (Bandai)
  2. (New) Yo-Kai Watch Gerapo Plus Yo-Kai Medal Season 5 Data File (Bandai)
  3. (↑) Buddy Fight BF-H-BT01 Giga Future (Bushiroad)
  4. (↓) Shuriken Sentai Ninninjer Ninja Ichibantou (Bandai)
  5. (↓) Shuriken Sentai Ninninjer DX Shurikenjin (Bandai)

Hobby

  1. (↑) PG 1/60 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam LED unit (Bandai)
  2. (↑) PG 1/60 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Bandai)
  3. (New) HGBF 1/144 Transient Gundam (Bandai)
  4. (→) 1/100 MG Gundam Double X (Bandai)
  5. (↓) Gundam FIX Figuration Metal Composite Banshee Norn (Awake) (Bandai)

One item this week wasn't made by Bandai. One. It's pretty scary how popular Bandai's products are in Japan. Bandai also dominated the top boys and girls toys of the week and had a strong hold on the top selling video games (thanks mostly to Robot Wars), but no presence on regular games or infant toys (which was mostly LEGO). Although apparently MegaHouse releases the Rubik's Cube in Japan, who knew?

DST wants to take you to Gotham

It's no secret that I'm a Batman fan... and also that I've terrible at keeping up with shows (as of this second, I'm only current on Supernatural). One of the bigger things I've missed has been Gotham, a series which largely serves as an origin story for Batman's rogues gallery. Diamond Select Toys, on the other hand, has clearly been paying attention since the company has announced THREE figures based on the show: Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin), Selina Kyle (Catwoman), and James Gordon.

While it's surprising that Diamond Select Toys is handling the line, DST has predictably delivered on quality: the figures look cool. While I obviously need the young Oswald for my ever-growing Penguin collection (My latest addition? A Kenner DC Super Powers Penguin to go with my ToyBiz DC Superheroes Penguin), I also really want that Selina Kyle.

It's definitely a very exciting line and another feather in DST's rather sizable cap. One might wonder what other popular comic tv shows that DST might produce merchandise for... well, besides Constantine because it looks like it might not be coming back (meaning that the one comic show I wound up following is also the only one which isn't getting renewed... it's The Cape all over again!).
