COMMENTARY: The Time Tribe Offers Interactive Storytelling, Tactile Experience

As a kid, my favorite educational experiences involved some sort of tactile learning—digging for fossils with my fellow Boy Scouts, trudging through muddy lo’i patches to harvest taro (an edible Hawaiian root), and slicing open frogs and fetal pigs in Biology class. I’m the classic have-to-touch-everything personality, a practical nightmare for museum staffs everywhere. Considering [...]

Josh Mayhem has himself a new custom for the Spring Forward show, which opens Thursday night and runs through April 30. His Acid Rain 7-inch Munny is a mish-mash of colors, pouring from a fountain on its head and dripping down onto the Munny and base. Getting a very 1970s vibe from the look.

Now, there's also the matter of the Spring Forward show, happening at BLU DOT (8000 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles) and co-sponsored by Kidrobot Los Angeles. Opening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, it features work from Abi Bowden, Andru Sisson, Blu Dot, Bryan Ray Turcotte, Cannon Dill, Casey Chaos, Chan Luu, Colt Bowden, Danny Fuentes, David Zadjman, Deb, Esther Kim, Heidi Kenney, Howie Pyro, Jack Rossi, Jai & Jai, Rigards, Josh Mayhem, Juanito Olivarria, L.A. I'm Yours, Lance Thingmaker, Michael Young, Natas Kaupas, Nic Cowan, Parker Jacobs, Piggy D, Pogo, Reggieknow, Revel Rosa, Rikk Agnew, Ryan Hitzel, Sam Soto, Scott Schultz, Steve Arroyo, Tyler Jacobs, The Fox is Black, and US Alteration. Phew! That's a lot of folks.

Minimates Enterprise finds itself in a Mirror, Mirror

Diamond Select Toys' exclusive "Mirror, Mirror" I.S.S. Enterprise is currently available for pre-order. This variant is based on an alternate reality's Starship Enterprise (from the episode "Mirror, Mirror") where Kirk and his crew are evil.

While the standard (ie, not evil parallel universe) version of the Enterprise may have been pretty cute, this exclusive variant is somehow even more adorable (perhaps due to the darker color scheme and extra detailing). The ship comes with an adjustable display base as well as an exclusive Captain Kirk Minimate that features the character in a sleeveless, gold tunic. The bridge can open to reveal a tiny, removable command chair and apparently the engineering section can be opened to reveal a Jefferies Tube.

The "Mirror, Mirror" Enterprise is billed as being an Entertainment Earth exclusive (although BBTS also has it listed) and is limited to a thousand pieces. The I.S.S Enterprise set is listed as being US$30 (US$5 more than the standard version) and is slated for a May release. So, who wants to take a flight on the dark side?

Image of an Otaku

A popular prime time TV show in Japan had a feature on "How otaku spend their money" but the portrayal wasn't particularly a good one.
The feature was basically saying that "all otaku are like this" and picked up on a "2D Bishojo Otaku."

However, going by the Japanese community comments, most people think that this feature was "Yarase" meaning "a setup" and that it looks like some TV producer just went to animate to pick up the latest anime goodies and threw together an otaku room.
Some of the stuff on display does look fishy - especially the placement of the wall scrolls hanging from that bar across the room. Most of the goodies are from anime titles of late too.

Anyway, lets look at some of the screencaps from the show.

Translated text is "He spends 50000 YEN PER MONTH on manga and anime goods."
The text in red in this case usually means ALLCAPS.

Translation: "this is HIS DAUGHTERS ROOM."

"That is the eldest daughter - her name is SHIZUKA."

"Second daughter, third daughter etc. The sixth daughter has been married off."

"I only listen to Anisong."

"PREFERS ANIME than eating."

"I'm really into Precure."

"There is however A CERTAIN SOMETHING that he also spends his money on."

"Every night he spends 500 yen on food."

"SACRIFICE"

"Men in the prime of their life."

"THIS IS WHAT OTAKU ARE LIKE - What do you think about all this?"

And this our otaku office of late - photo taken yesterday after shooting for the Worldwide Otaku Report finally due out this May.

The word "Otaku" is interpreted in different ways by different folks. For example terms such as "Wine Otaku" and "Train Otaku" refer to folks who are specialists on these subjects.
The most popular definition of an "Otaku" in Japan however is what the mainstream media portrays - just like what you saw in the feature above.

The issue here is that the masses start to think that we are all the same spending money on anime goodies rather than food. The important thing is to not hide your interests. I know of many people who are into anime, manga, figures or dolls but dont discuss or share their interests because they fear what others around them would think and end up living the life of others.

Not all otaku are like the one featured in that TV slot and its important to let folks know this by sharing your interests with others on and offline - or what would end up happening is that we continue to get labeled as being ronery-rather-buy-anime-goodies-than-eat otaku which continues to make it difficult for some folks to share their passions for anime.
