I dug this out and thought it would make for a fitting Pic of the Day today, the last day to help get enough pre-orders for the Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull. You may have heard of these things that you stick to the wall in your kids’ rooms. Many use them for a little dash of decoration, color, and character without getting any paint on you or the kids. I’m a sucker for items on clearance. Normally, a clear head will prevail.  Mark something down though and I can’t resist. Similar to the tale I told on Episode 37 of the Action Figure Blues Podcast,  I picked up a couple of the Marvel Heroics capsules at the same drug store. At 50 cents, I [...]

Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie

Yes, this is real. This is the world we live in now. One where some dude with a camera can film himself yelling at his TV set while he plays old games and years later become a movie star because of it. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

“Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie” is a passion project by independent filmmakers James Rolfe and Kevin Finn, based on the popular web series. The film is being produced outside the studio system, entirely funded by fan donations. Principle photography took place in Spring of 2012, in the Los Angeles area, with Jason Brewer as the DP. Additional filming is taking place on the East Coast. Editing is in its early stages.

The film is inspired by the famous Atari video game burial of 1982. Atari produced a game based on the biggest blockbuster movie of that year, E.T., and rushed it to meet the deadline for the Christmas shopping season. It was a commercial failure and millions of unsold game cartridges were buried in a desert landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Coincidentally, it’s not too far from Roswell, the landing site of a different kind of E.T.

This looks terrible, but in a sort of ironic good way. I especially like the part when the old dude yells “Where’s my fuckin’ arm!?” Shit’s deep, yo.

Integrity Toys' Norma Desmond as Hollywood Royalty

Giselle as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard? The fashion is drop dead gorgeous. The face? Where is Norma? I doubt that many would buy a doll that looked like this:

IMO Gloria Swanson wasn't exactly the best looking actress of her day and you can't portray talent in a doll so picking Giselle was as good a decision as any. Just don't expect visitors to your collection to say "Wow, you have a Gloria Swanson doll!"

W Club members were offered the opportunity to pre-order this doll from dealers a few days ago and from many reports, she is nearly or completely sold out.
Item # 14034
Norma Desmond
Sunset Boulevard Commemorative Collectible Doll
Limited Edition of 500 Dolls
Suggested Retail Price: $119.00 USD
Estimated Date of Arrival: Week of November 19, 2012

For me, the beauty in this doll is the fashion. It represents one aspect of the era of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Gloria Swanson is known best for being a great star during the silent movie era. She continued to act into her later years and died at the age of 84 in 1983.

So now you know more than you wanted to about Norma Desmond.

 From Wikipedia:
Sunset Boulevard (also known as Sunset Blvd.) is a 1950 American film noir directed and co-written by Billy Wilder, and produced and co-written by Charles Brackett. It was named after the boulevard that runs through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California.
The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen with Erich von Stroheim as Max Von Mayerling, her butler and ex-husband. Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough and Jack Webb play supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by leading silent film actors Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson.

Praised by many critics when first released, Sunset Boulevard was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won three. It is widely accepted as a classic, often cited as one of the greatest films of American cinema. Deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989, Sunset Boulevard was included in the first group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. In 1998, it was ranked number twelve on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 best American films of the 20th century, and in 2007 it was 16th on their 10th Anniversary list.

Wasn't there a Sunset Blvd. backdrop produced for one of Integrity Toy's Gene Marshall conventions?

This new Azusa Miura is Brilliant

This new Azusa Miura is Brilliant screenshot

The Idolmaster girls keep coming with yet another offering from Megahouse, this time in the form of Azusa Miura's "Brilliant Stage Princess Melody version". It's very, very pink, to say the least. I feel like it's a bit difficult to make a call on this one. While I'm a fairly large Idolmaster fan, at least as large as one can be without procuring the actual games, I've always found many of their figures a bit lacking, to say the least.

I'm not sure what it is, but something always seems a bit off, and the same holds true here, as well. Perhaps Megahouse just isn't the best producer to handle such a franchise? Whatever the case may be, Azusa here is a bit of a toss-up. Of the two options for hairstyles, I certainly prefer the longer one, and I'm hoping that means her 1960s-era flight attendant's cap is removable as well.

Her outfit is certainly interesting, providing quite the clash of colors and patterns. I do like her skirt and tights, though! It's hard to say whether or not this one strictly seems worth picking up, but you'll have until March to decide if you want to pay the ¥8,500 price of admission.
