Hisashi Yuki ran a poll today to decide which of the remaining two Technobot retools would be shown off tonight, and Nosecone was the winner by a decent margin. And it seems the right choice was made, as the three new photos tweeted tonight show a really fantastic job having been done with a retooled Rook. Trading the armor shell for a gigantic drill, the new accessory piece can plug on to the forward facing fist ports in robot mode just like a combiner hand. It also features a new head sculpt and three(!) small weapons. Read on to get your first look!

Grodnertal Wooden Costume Dolls

If you follow my Victorian Dolls, Victorian Traditions, The Victorian Era and Me Blog you know that I just LOVE the Victorian Era, love history, love to do research, and love fashion doll collections. Several years ago I ran across the Metropolitan Museum of Art website and fell in love with their collections, the ability to see everything they have in their collections, and the ability to set-up my own "My Met" space to bookmark items at the MET that I love.  So, I spent an afternoon "Moseying At The MET!" and wrote about it HERE.

Well, while researching the "Penny Wooden and Peg Wooden Dolls" I came across a series of beautiful Grodnertal Wooden Costume Dolls depicting the 11th - 16th century and just had to show them to you.  All of the dolls are from the Theriault's website.

I think they're all absolutely beautiful and love all their costumes.  As you would except they are all very pricey - especially the doll depicting the 16th century costume.

According to her description: 14" Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Value Points: the doll wears original costume of green homespun with applied gilt paper accents, metallic belt, wrapped shoes, and a long hooded cape over matching turban edged by braided black beads, with old ink-written attached paper "costume of the 11th century". Realized Price: $2,800

According to her description: 14" Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Value Points: wearing elaborate silk brocade gown with gilt braid trim, banded shawl that is framed by a voluminous hooded cap that is white fur lined and clasped to the gown with fan-shaped gilt buttons, with original ink-script paper scrap "costume of the 12th century". Realized Price: $3,400.

According to her description: 14" Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Value Points: flawless original finish with dainty face, wearing original brown velvet dress with silk twill skirt, and elaborate turban hat with oversized bow. An aged paper scrap attached to skirt reads "costume of the 13th century". Realized Price: $4,750.

According to her description: 14" Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Value Points: wearing original patterned silk gown with magenta silk bodice and sleeves and with attached patterned silk cape, with fitted cap and carrying a small purse with blue velvet backing and embroidered silk purse, painted red shoes, and attached ink-script paper reading "costume of the 14th century". Realized Price: $3,200.

According to her description: 14" Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Value Points: the beautifully-preserved doll wears original elaborately-woven silk gown with brown velvet and silver fringe trim, blue cap with extended veil, painted shoes, and has an attached ink-script paper "costume of the 15th century". Realized Price: $3,800.

According to her description: 14" Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1840. Value Points: fine original condition with unusual shapeliness, and wearing original silk brocade blouse, red silk skirt with metallic fringe, velvet fitted shoes, and a long muslin transfer-printed robe with green silk bows; a scrap of attached ink-script paper reads "costume of the 16th century".  Realized Price: $7,500.

How beautiful are all these dolls? It's hard to decide which one I love the best. If I had to choose I'd go with the 15th century costume doll. How about you?

#watched "Bakemono no Ko" / "The Boy & The Beast" by Mamoru Hosoda

#bakemononoko starts out deceptively like a "cutiesy anime with a serious message boiling underneath", and evolves into something "more" adult (and by that I mean "non-kiddy" and not "sexual" in anyway shape or form) and tuned out to be deeper and quite motivationally emotional, IMHO. From #MamoruHosoda the director of "Girl Who Lept Thru Time", "Summer Wars" and "Wolf Children', I'd expect a lot

Tonner One World Dolls to produce an Empire line of dolls

Tonner One World dolls have made their first joint move after their merge: they are going to release a limited edition of Empire dolls. The TV series Empire, if you have been living in a cave for the last 18 months, is a pop phenomenon, the most successful TV series in the US and a worldwide hit, a black soap opera taking place in the music industry, Much of the series'success is due to the incredible Taraji P. Henson (formerly of Person Of Interest), playing the sassy Cookie Lyon.

The company has reserved a website where one can sigh up for email releases regarding the dolls. So far there has been no information regarding which characters are making it in the line up and if they are going to have the actors' likeness or not. It's certain though that Cookie will be the star of the line as she is in the series. The welcoming email does not say much more:

Empire is one of the hottest show's on television and it is about to get even hotter! The Empire Collector Doll Series is in full development right now and we guarantee you are going to love these dolls!
Hand scuplted and designed by legendary doll designers, Robert Tonner and Stacey McBride-Irby, these one of a kind, limited edition works of art will leave you breathless and weill be a definite conversation piece.
For up-to-the minute details on what's new, what's coming next, promotions, collector's contests, all things EMPIRE and so much more; be sure to stay connected.

Cannot wait to see the dolls! Can we hope for a Naomi Campbell doll too (she guest stars in the series)?

One of the reason you find relatively few licensed products here at Smart-Toys is that they often set "gender specific" rules regarding play:  The engineers, builders, and scientists (Bob the Builder, Jimmy Neutron, Lego Man, Sid the Science Kid, Handy Manny, and so on) are men, while the women are relegated to cooks and princesses. This is exactly what Debbie Sterling noticed before starting Goldie Blox: the 'pink aisle' is filled with princesses and dolls, compared to the building, chemistry,

Paws And Take A Look At These Unusual Black And White Steiff Cocker Spaniels

Sometimes things are just easier in black and white. For example, the calendar says its April, but it's snowing outside here today around these parts. So is it winter or spring? There is no ambivalence, however, when it comes to Steiff's beloved black and white Cocker Spaniels. These eye-catching dogs are always pretty as a picture! Unlike their brown and white, and all brown cousins, these black and white beauties have been produced in a number of really unusual novelties and exclusives over time. Let's focus on a few of the most interesting examples today!

This first black and white Cockie rarity should be music to your ears. Here we have Steiff's Musik Cockie or Music Cockie. She is 17 cm and sitting. She is made from black and white mohair and is head jointed. She has a large, open, smiling mouth. Her face is detailed with large, friendly brown and black pupil eyes and a black hand embroidered nose. Her music box is activated by turning her black mohair tail. This singing sweetie was produced from 1955 through 1957 only.

Let's raise a toast to our second black and white Cockie novelty. Here we have Steiff's fantastically adorable and unusual Cockie the Cocker Spaniel nightcap animal. She is 15 cm and head jointed. Her arms and face are made from white mohair, while her ears are made from black mohair. Her body, which is designed to be like a hollow tent, is made from orange felt which is decorated with a sweet oversized red, orange, and green tulip. Her face is detailed with very large black and white google eyes, a black hand embroidered nose and mouth, and a touch of airbrushing. Steiff designed a number of "nightcap" animals; Others in this series included cats, bears, foxes, and well attired rabbits. These items were designed to hide a sweet, prize, or coin on the pillow of a child. Nightcap Cockie was produced in 15 cm between 1969 and 1974.

This third black and white Cocker spaniel pup makes news everywhere he goes. Here we have Steiff's version of The Saturday Evening Post's "Butch the Cover Dog" mascot. Butch is standing, 17 cm, and head jointed. He is hard-stuffed with excelsior. His body and face are made from short white mohair, which has been carefully airbrushed with black highlights on his back and head. His ears, tail, and feet are made from very long black shaggy mohair. It almost appears that Butch is wearing fuzzy slippers, based on his foot construction, and has long white mohair "feathers" on the back seams of each of his front and back legs. His face is detailed with very large round black, brown, and white spherical eyes, a black hand embroidered nose, and a touch of pink highlighting around his lips. He has a special chest tag that has his creator's name, Albert Staehle, featured prominently on it. Technically, Butch was made in this size only in 1958, although Steiffgal knows of several examples that measure about 23 cm tall.

Are you in the doghouse? Well, in the case of our last rare black and white Cocker spaniel, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Here we have a sitting, 12 cm black and white version of Cockie. He is head jointed and has a particularly pouty look to him. Perhaps that is because he is attached to a metal chain, which is original to him. His eartag number is 3312,96, which corresponds to 3=sitting; 3=mohair; 12=12 cm; 9=special edition; and 6=black. This Cockie was part of a special edition made exclusively for FAO Schwarz. The overall playset came with this Cockie, wooden kennel, red bowl, and toy bone.

Steiffgal hopes this discussion on Steiff's rarer black and white Cocker Spaniels has been a pleasant paws in your day.
