As reported by the Toy Industry Association (TIA), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a direct final rule exempting unfinished and untreated trunk wood from third party testing for the eight heavy metals listed in the ASTM F963-11 toy safety standard. The rule is slated to come into effect on September 15. [...]

The Bratz comeback: will it work this time?

Bratz was a playline fashion doll that threatened Barbie sales - maybe even surpassed them - when they first came out in 2001. Designed by Carter Bryant, a former Mattel employee, with 10" bodies, huge heads, heavily made up and dressed in what looked like the then current street style, they were an instant hit with girls that were bored with more conservative Barbie dolls and wanted something more like them to play with. They were so successful that Mattel issued its own line, My Scene. The battle reached its apex in 2004, when Mattel sued MGA (the Bratz maker) for copying, alleging that their designer was still working for Mattel when he came up with the concept. After a lot of legal wrangling, MGA was ordered to pull Bratz from selves. Even though the decision was later reversed, the damage had been done. Bratz sales went into a slump.

The line did try to come back once again. back in 2010, changing the size of the bodies (12"), new logos and slogans, but it did not make any waves. There were even complaints about quality being inferior to previous product. After some time, the company pulled back all lines in 2014 to overhaul the dolls and re-launch this year. As the tastes of their target group have shifted drastically, with the success of lines such as Monster High and Ever After High, they have some serious competition to beat. Not to mention the avalanche that Frozen dolls have been since that franchise surfaced.

I was never a fan of doll lines like this, so I cannot say if the attempt to brink back this line will be successful or not. MGA is suing Mattel for industrial espionage now (they filed a lawsuit back in 2014) so there are still issues to be worked out on the business side of things. MGA is trying to open up the line to social media as well, like instagram and youtube. They revamped their website too (see photo above) but it's weirdly devoid of product photos so far. There's even an app for smartphones. After this first wave, MGA is releasing at least three more waves until Christmas.

"Blue Serenade" Katy Keene

We picked up this new Katy Keene doll yesterday and when I opened the box I was very pleased to see that Katy is even prettier in person than her promos showed.

This particular Katy's hair style is closer to the early comic book Pin-Up Queen's style with it's roll bangs. I have hunted far and wide and have not found a KK with a chignon but I do love this style for a doll as it's neat and will stay that way.

I was surprised to find that the gown is two pieces. The satiny top has soft folds horizontally across the torso and has teensy buttons at the back of the neck (UGH) and the rest of the closure is hook and eye. There are two large bows cinched by a circle of clear beads that are the same as the beads around her neck.

The long chiffon skirt has a small zipper closure. The fabric drapes beautifully.
There's a little clutch and silver/grey long gloves. They will stay in their plastic bag as I don't like the effort it takes to put gloves on small dolls.
The earrings are silvery sparkly with faceted metal and rhinestones. They match her cuff bracelet which is not shown.

Her faux fur stole is long and has three "tails" at each end. On mine, the lining is not sewn properly. It is too large and I will have to pin it so it won't show when it's being worn.
Shiny silver strappy pumps complete the ensemble.

If you're a fan of the Color Infusion body, this is a perfect doll for you. I bought her for the outfit sans shoes which I know are too large.

52Toys caught sight of another SD-style Transformers product from Fewture. Their ES Gokin series will be bringing out a Fortress Maximus figure in the near future, but that's not the only thing to note here. On a display card behind Max is a silhouette that bears a distinct resemblance to Victory leader Star Saber, giving a good pointer of what might be next up after Fortress Maximus has come himself. Master Made SDT-02 Diabolus Rex - Super Deformed Not-Trypticon New Images

The group Master Made has released a few new concept renders showing off their followup to the recently released Titan, a super-deformed style figure of Metroplex. Diabolus Rex represents Trypticon with a similar style of tweaked proportions, though that fact is certainly less immediately evident for the dinosaur body than it is on Titan's robot mode. We don't have any further information currently, besides that it seems to be aimed for a release late this year. Keep reading to have a look at the renders!

MakeToys MangaMech Series Product Updates - Rear End And Cyclonus Upgrade Split!

Something that should make potential buyers a bit happier with upcoming Maketoys products. Their site has been updated to show that the upgrade parts to make Deluxe Cyclonus more like the IDW appearance is its own product - MM-02 SP "E.A.K." - and Rear End (aka Not-Tailgate) looks like it will be sold solo. With any luck, MM-02SP will be priced similarly to the MFB weapon kit that sold alongside Trashtalk and Cogwheel, making it easily accessible to everyone who wants to makeover their Cyclonus!
