Hasbro gives EW first look at SDCC-exclusive Star Wars Black Jabba, EW mostly gives us tiny photos

Hasbro has given Entertainment Weekly a sneak peek at its SDCC-exclusive Jabba the Hutt set. Unfortunately, however, the EW article has chosen to bundle many of the images into one tiny cross-section so we only have a GOOD first look at the unboxed Jabba. Thanks a heap, EW!

The 6-inch scale Star Wars Black Series Jabba the Hutt was unveiled at Toy Fair back in February and will be getting a retail release as well. However, the SDCC exclusive version features new packaging (which includes a diorama), Salacious Crumb, and Jabba's hookah (which will all be absent from the retail release if the box seen at the con was any indication).

Both releases fail to give the character a proper dais for display purposes, although -- if I strain my eyes -- it seems like the SDCC version at least has a cardboard dais in there. It's also something of an insult that Salacious Crumb might only be available through SDCC given that he's a tiny figure and somewhat integral to many of the scenes involving Jabba.

No word on pricing yet, but the SDCC set is probably going to be a pain to get your hands on regardless. Be sure to check out the images in the gallery.

Truth be told, I've been gagging to see what FoxBox Studio has in store at the current Thailand Toy Expo (May 1-4 @ Central World, Bangkok), and thanks to the TTE FB, we managed to have a solo pic of their “BLACK HERMES PSYCHOPROMPUS” - an event exclusive limited to only 20pcs, and priced at 8500 Thai Baht, available via Raffle only.

Looks absolutely awesome, IMHO. But of course I am baised, I love their 211/6-figures! LOL ~ Check out the previously released version here, for visual comparison :)

Disney Stores to freeze sales of Frozen merchandise

Due to an inability to meet demand, Disney Stores will soon give fans the cold shoulder when it comes to Frozen merchandise. Retailers will be implementing a number of chilly provisions and restrictions not expected to thaw until around July or August (blame global warming?).

Although Disney Stores will getting a lot of these collectibles on the shelves as soon as they arrive, select product including dolls and plush will ONLY be available for sale on Saturdays at store opening (presumably meaning when the new stock is put on the shelves). There will be a two item per guest (would it kill them to say "customer"?) on select items as well, although the harshest restrictions come in regards to the costumes... which, come to think of it, nobody here is probably interested in anyway.

While it's cool that Frozen is enjoying this kind of success, I'm just a little surprised that Disney didn't forecast the demand better.

Keeping Things Balanced With This One Legged Steiff Studio Grey Heron

It's important to keep things balanced when it comes to Steiff, right?  Well, no vintage collectible better demonstrates that then this fantastic and lifelike Steiff studio bird!  Check out this "one-legged wonder" and see what makes him so interesting from the design and historical perspectives.

This great and unusual Steiff bird is really on solid footing, despite what you might think!  This studio, or life sized, Grey Heron is 50 cm tall, unjointed, and standing on one leg.  He is primarily made from short white plush and short grey plush.  He is brought to life with stenciled felt wings; long grey and white plush "feathering" on his back, chest, and head; and a long, thin yellow trivera velvet beak.  His pert face is detailed with light green and black pupil eyes and a black plush "bandit style" mask across his forehead. And of course, you can't help but notice his authentic, yellow trivera legs (or in this case, leg!) with its prominent, distinct "knee" and large four toed foot. This Grey Heron was made from 1980 through 1984 in this size only.  He is pictured from three angles in the photo above.

This big bird has a leg up in a few areas over his other Steiff bird cousins.  First of all, this is the only Grey Heron (or any heron at all) that Steiff has ever produced in the line - at least as far as Steiffgal can find.  It is also the only one legged bird Steiff has ever produced - again, as far as Steiffgal knows of.  Although this bird only has one leg, it does have a second foot which is attached to his body.  You can see how Steiff did this in a realistic manner in the photo here on the left - as if he were "tucking" his long leg under his wing. And, in case you are wondering, he really can balance on one leg - given there are no strong drafts or wandering pets within a three foot radius of him!

It is Steiffgal's best guess that this "tall drink of water" is a variation on the company's somewhat better known two legged white studio stork.  That traditional bundle-of-joy-bearer is 50 cm tall, unjointed, standing and made from short, white woven fur and long, white tufted plush. He has very subtle light blue airbrushing on his forehead and wings and sports black trivera velvet feathers on the tips of his white wings. He has delightful, posable red trivera velvet legs.  Each foot has four red trivera "toes." His face is detailed with brown and black pupil eyes and a red trivera velvet beak. Like Steiff's studio Grey Heron, this studio stork was manufactured from 1980 through 1984; he is pictured here on left.

Steiffgal hopes this discussion on Steiff's one-legged Grey Heron makes you want to stand up and cheer!

Official images of Leader class Jetfire takeoff online

After first being leaked back in February on eBay and then officially debuting at Toy Fair 2014, we're now getting our first official images from Hasbro of Transformers Generations Leader class Jetfire. The Autobot scientist has long been a fan favorite, but this particular figure has gotten a mixed reaction from many fans. This is caused by Hasbro's decision to model the figure on the original Jetfire figure as well as his cartoon counterpart, Skyfire. Problem is neither version of the character look remotely alike and have different appeal.

Fans really want a dedicated remake of the original Jetfire figure (a slightly modified Macross Valkyrie) using modern technology in the same way they did their new versions of Whirl and Roadbuster, figures originally repurposed from old Japanese Dorvack figures. Hasbro gave us this with the jet mode, but not with the bot mode, though he does have a mask he can wear that's a little more original toy-like. On the flip side, we've never gotten a proper Skyfire figure that looked like the cartoon design. We did get something close in Transformers Classics Jetfire, but in reality that figure was based 100% on his appearance in the Transformers: Stormbringer comic series (the Japanese version was in cartoon colors and named Skyfire, though). The new figure has a bot mode similar to the cartoon version, but has that pesky G1 toy jet mode rather than his iconic squared off cybertronian jet mode.

It's still very much a figure worth owning even if it does suffer from an identity crisis. With his construction he could easily be remolded later to be more accurate in either direction. And let's face it, we don't get a lot of big Transformers jets like this, I think the last non-Masterpiece was Leader movie Starscream from 2010. He's definitely on my buy list for when he's released later this later.

Viz joins in on the SDCC 2014 figure exclusive fun with this 1/6 Naruto statue

It's that time of year again! San Diego Comic Con 2014 is right around the corner so that means time to start showing off exclusives. This year we've got Viz Media, best known for their anime and manga distribution, trying their hand at SDCC exclusive collectibles with their Naruto Shippuden 1/6 scale Naruto Uzumaki statue.

The statue, produced by fairly new Japanese company Gecco, will measure in at 27 cm (10.6 inches) tall and shows him wearing his father's, the Fourth Hokage's, jacket. The sculpting really is top notch with lots of textures and they did a perfect job of capturing the young ninja's face. It's a statue worthy of being an SDCC exclusive, but that kind of quality comes at a price. He'll be sold at the the Viz booth with Gecco present for US$150. It's a lot of money, but this is one of the better Naruto statues out there and it's designed to stand out on a shelf. You can get yours when the conventions opens from July 23 to 27.

Star Wars Day Celebrations In The East 2014

$

The notion of "Star Wars Day" had always been a "foreign concept" to me. Something to be celebrated "overseas", but hardly recognized in the East, much less Singapore. Perhaps there have been pockets of celebrations through the years, or perhaps even commercial enterprises / happenings which utilizes the event for promotional/retail purposes. I remember adidas' launch of their Star Wars themed collection, and even a group of Storm Troopers - lead by Darth Vader - marching down Orchard Road, promoting some event / happening.

But as a fan-driven public event? Specifically celebrating "Star War Day" on May 4th? Unheard of … until very recently.

(SWDJKT Pics via Andhika Paramartha Mapparessa + @loubelleshop)

Bandung started their SWDBDG celebrations back in 2012, which then lead to SWDJKT in 2013 (for which I was generously invited to), and this year SWDJKT continues forth in Jakarta with a weekend event, happening right now!

I remember lamenting the lack of such activities in Singapore, with friends back in SWDJKT 2013, and lo and behold, Singapore is holding a Star Wars Day celebration this year, in Jurong Regional Library(11am-7pm), in what might be the first ever in this tiny red dot island! *EXCITEMENT*

(Pics via #MAYTHE4THSG Facebook Page
Below: Splendid Poster photography by John Heng)

I'd not lament anymore the "whys" it took so long and so many years to have such an event (I am not oblivious to issues of "budgetary constraints" and "time commitment" hahaha ;p), but rather embrace and enjoy the notion, that such activities exist here and now! And with the Star Wars-lore continuing with new feature films on the way, it no longer is just about reminiscing the past "classics", but also continuing with the lore, for the next generation and beyond, and that certainly, leaves The Force by our side, always!

And while I am unable to physically enjoy either activities this weekend, I'll do my little bit online via my blog, with whole day today (and tomorrow) blog-postings all about STAR WARS!

May The 4th Be With YOU!
