Who's making a ton of Super Mario collectibles? It'sa them, Jakks Pacific!
Nightram over at VGMM reports that Jakks Pacific has a LOT of Super Mario U merchandise on the way, including new "micro" figures, plushies, and so on.
Licensing for Super Mario merchandise in the West has always been a somewhat baffling subject, as collectibles have often been made by companies without a recognizable name (if you can even figure out the makers at all; one of the more recent exceptions has been K'Nex). Online retailer Big Bad Toy Store lists the maker of a lot of the previous merchandise (plushies, those figurines in the bubble-on-cardback containers, etc) as "Global Holdings", for instance.
The other issue with the previous Mario offerings was a lack of retail presence. The figurines would only pop up sporadically at some stores, occasionally as a seasonal thing (where supermarkets would get them in; otherwise I've only ever seen them at Target and Toys "R" Us). While I would hope that association with Jakks Pacific would increase the availability of Super Mario collectibles, the company has generally had less coverage than its larger competitors although, at the very least, this should get the figures actual shelf-space at some retailers.
Although we're getting some very high-end Mario stuff this year (S.H. Figuarts Mario and playsets, Nendoroid Luigi, etc), the JAKKS stuff isn't exactly competing with them. Instead their collectibles could be seen more as fighting it out against K'Nex, given their figurines will be tiny, there's a playset element, and the company will also have Mario Kart-themed products.
The 3-figurine packs will apparently retail for around US$5, which seems reasonable enough given the price of the blind-bagged Mario collectibles. No word on the larger playsets yet, although they look incredible.
JAKKS apparently obtained licensing rights for a number of Nintendo properties last year including the Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong franchises. If the Mario news seems cool, just wait until we start seeing Zelda collectibles.

Say yes yes to this custom of Kill la Kill's naked Nudist Nonon
Thanks to a tip from Jason Brozek (mr_raccoon) and a post on tumblr from dcresistance we got to see something really cool in the form of a custom figure of Kill la Kill's Nonon in her Nudist Beach outfit. Made by Celso Ryuji the figure was repurposed from an older custom and made largely out of repositioned garage kit parts. The end result is a great likeness of Nonon in both sculpt and paint. He really did a perfect job getting all the pouches in juuust the right spot to leave a little bit to the imagination just like in the show. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Good Smile Company or the like does a figure like it and I have no doubt it'll be popular.

Ice-Make plans to pre-order this new Gray Fullbuster figure from Tsume
With a new season of Fairy Tail only weeks away companies aren't wasting much time in getting new figures out to the long denied fans. This time around it's Tsume and their amazing looking Gray Fullbuster HQF. Gray is unsurprisingly half naked and pulling off an Ice-Make: Super Freeze Arrow, all of which are very well sculpted. I really like the chunks of ice that look like they're suspended in mid-air over the spikey base. Painting is very nice as well with lots of gradients to feather in the shadows and frost of the ice.
It's a top quality figure that comes in at a price of 99.90 € (US$138) which isn't too bad when you consider it stands at 28 cm tall (about 11 inches). The figure will be out later this year and if you make one of the first 200 orders through Tsume it'll be signed by the art team. My one complaint about this figure is that in being made by a French company they used the French spelling 'Grey' on the figure's base rather than the 'Gray' used by everyone else.

Square-Enix Theatrhythm Static Arts mini adds more characters
We have been tracking the Final Fantasy Theatrhythm Static Arts mini series since the first figures were spotted at last year's Tokyo Game Show. At that point, the only characters to be seen were Final Fantasy VII's Cloud, Sephiroth, and Tifa. More than a few Final Fantasy fans were disappointed to not have heroes from other entries in the series represented. Well, your prayers have been answered (sort of)!
Three new characters have been revealed in a Facebook album: Final Fantasy VIII's Squall plus series mainstays, the Moogle and Chocobo. I kind of enamored with both the Moogle and Chocobo but I will admit that more protagonists would have been nice. No price nor release date has been revealed for this trio as of yet.
