Calling all sculptors in Asia: Good Smile tryouts begin

Good Smile Company's Shinsotsu blog has put out a call to all sculptors: the Sculptor's and Finisher's Try Outs are open for 2014! Once again, Good Smile is on the hunt for talent, and in this year's tryouts, there's two additional franchises you can submit sculpts from. KanColle and Sonico are joining the Vocaloid crew, Fate/stay night, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Dog Days, and Black Rock Shooter as themes you can work with, so expect more KanColle than you can shake your fist angrily at. There's also apparently an original character they'll need to sculpt as well in either Nendoroid or figma scale form.

There is a little caveat, of course: the tryouts are pretty much open to folks in Japan or Asia only, which means that I can't take part myself (not that I have any sculpting talents ...). Still, I'll be curious to see if any familiar names pop up working for GSC in the future, not unlike kiking's did a year or two ago.

For more info if you're in the eligible regions, check out the Japan and Asia entry info pages. GSC's deadline is March 31 for all sculpts and finished products to be submitted by.

That’s it. I’m sick of this snow (4 more inches yesterday), this cold (single digits coming again this weekend), and the never-ending grayness of winter. I’m ready to move almost anywhere but here! I’m thinking these creatures, who hail from the Teddy Bear Republic, must have it made. Bright colors, furry manes, contented faces – […]

Toy Fair 2014: Kidrobot

Kidrobot's blog has posted, in two parts, a quick tour of their Toy Fair wares for 2014. Some of their Toy Fair surprises were spoiled a little early (namely, the Mega Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lines), but even those we got a little more of a peek at. The initial TMNT line-up is Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Splinter, Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang (in his exo-skeleton), and the Foot Soldier. The packaging seems to indicate they may be glow-in-the-dark, too.

Mega Man is pretty much as we've reported in the past, but the new surprise seems to be the DC Comics x Kidrobot mash-up that will bring both blind-boxed figures and mini-Labbits to a shop near you. There's also a teaser for what could be a Frank Kozik-designed Joker Labbit, too, and I think that would a.) be likely given the Marvel x Kidrobot crossover and b.) be really, really popular.

Also at the Kidrobot Toy Fair booth were two teases at upcoming figures: a new Kidrobot Black piece from Yury Ustsinau and a piece ... based on Snoop Dogg? We'll have a little more info on these soon, hopefully, but do you spot anything that catches your eye, Tomopop readers?

Six years ago, I wrote an article in ToyFare #132 about the 1980s toy line Robo Force. It was developed by the CBS Toy Company (formerly Ideal, who, side note, created the original Teddy Bear). Like dozens of toy lines in the 1980s it came and went fairly quickly. In my interview in ToyFare with Robo Force […]

Don't let the NSA catch this Edward Snowden figure

$

Edward Snowden: Hero. Traitor. Hero-traitor. Traitor-hero. Wherever you stand on the issue, the former NSA contractor and whistleblower was one of the most prominent names in 2013. While the CIA and NSA may have failed to get their hands on him, toy collectors now (kinda) have the opportunity since there's now an Edward Snowden figure.

Why does this exist? Because your Obama figure has been hiding some secrets from action figure constituents (gee, maybe this is why that Obama figure came with weapons...). That said, the Snowden figure itself is... underwhelming. The head looks like it was created via a 3D printer and subsequently the details look a little fuzzy. A standard 12-inch scale body was used, but no effort was made (via paint, etc) to adjust the color of his hands to match his face. While the figure isn't terrible, I was hoping for a more fitting tribute to the man who exposed massive government overreach and sparked a national debate.

For those interested in capturing a small piece of contemporary American history on their shelves (and one of the CIA's most wanted men), there are several purchasing options available from just buying the head for US$60 (we'll call that one the "CIA package") to the full figure in one of several costumes (including Edward Snowden as Indiana Jones because, well, Indiana Jones!), the cheapest of which is a US$99 "military brown outfit". The one pictured is the header is the "casual outfit" which will run you US$134.

Be warned, however: if you order one, it might take a while to reach you. Word is that it'll ship first to Hong Kong then hole up in a Russian airport for a few weeks.

[ Order at Thatsmyface ]

((Additional warning: Purchasing this figure (or even looking at this post) may attract the attention of the NSA and/or get you on the FBI's no-fly list))

I HAD to track down images of The Loyal Subjects' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers mini figures - on display at New York Toy Fair (Feb 16-19.2014) - and finally found graphic image cut-out in lieu of actualized 3-dimensional figurines. Nevertheless, here is a lineup of who to expect for this blind-boxed series to view and plan your expenditure! No product nor availability details to share as yet, I'm afraid :p
