Electrostatic Flocking

JamesFL aka OOAK Zoo, the wonderfully talented re-paint artist, posted this image and information about electrostatic doll head flocking.

This is what James wrote:
Here's a pic of my GI Joe that I had custom flocked by Ray Cairo of Flock Concepts, he's a master at electrostatic flocking (the fibers stand on end like a brush)...this is not the shake n' bake style of flocking (which actually looks more like felt). I've asked him if he would flock the 16" girls and guys and he said he would, so you just need to contact him with your ideas. He can also do a shorter velvet type flock like on the vintage Kens. He doesn't work with rooted hair so if the head you want flocked has rooted hair you'll probably have to pull it all out first. He can also mix short and long flock fibers, for example shorter on the sides and longer on top for a sort of flat top look.
I've seen electrostatic flocking in action when Alain Tremblay did a workshop at the last Gene convention in Philadelphia a few years ago.  I posted a picture of my flocked head Trent previously on this blog but here it is again.
It's a great look for some dolls and if you wish to learn more about this process or have someone do this for one of your dolls, check out these links.

SoundWave SW50 Bluetooth Speaker: Bass At Its Finest

I was recently sent a SoundWave SW50 bluetooth speaker by GearZap for testing, and I love it. I needed a new speaker to blast my music, since my other one was run on archaic batteries and would cut out whenever the lower frequencies became too powerful.  (And, as I am an EDM fan, this really was a problem). The SoundWave SW50 bluetooth speaker is a fourth of the size of my other speaker, looks awesome, uses bluetooth connectivity, and sounds incredible! If ...

Alter's Perrine appears in scans

Alter's 1/8-scale Strike Witches line moves at a glacial pace, but I've been happy with it so far. This month's magazine scans showed off their unpainted Perrine sculpt alongside a few more shots of the winter coat Sanya.

The mechanical detail in her Bren LMG looks good. Of course Perrine's pose makes sure you get a face full of panty, though she wears leggings over them so it shouldn't look too vulgar in painted form.

I didn't see any pricing info but it looks to be set for a 2013 release.

Hobby Japan's Kanetsugu Naoe looks pretty in pink

Hobby Japan's Kanetsugu Naoe looks pretty in pink screenshot

Gender swap anime Hyakka Ryouran certainly isn't shy about showing off its female cast, and pervy figure collectors like me are thankful for it. Alter and Hobby Japan made a Kanetsugu Naoe swimsuit figure last year, and now they're at it again. With, uh, the same figure.

This time, Kanetsugu will be wearing a pink swimsuit, which I think complements her design better. Although I tend to rag on 99% of swimsuit figures that come my way, I do think Alter's design is quite nice. Mostly it's because Kanetsugu's not wearing some generic-looking bikini - there's some intricate detailing and styling in hers.

The figure is set for a September 2013 release, and will go for ¥7,249. Get ready to fire up those proxy services, though, as this is a Hobby Japan exclusive.

Satan joins the Seven Deadly Sins line

Satan joins the Seven Deadly Sins line screenshot

Although there was no physical model, we can at least marvel in the design of Satan. She'll be the next to join Hobby Japan and Orchid Seed's ambitious Seven Deadly Sins figures.

If you're trying to make sense of the drawing, she's got flowing red hair, a flowing red cape, and a gigantic reddish axe. She's also wearing bikini armor, pretty much. Don't think I didn't notice that it's stylishly asymmetrical.

There's no pricing or release info yet, but I do recall Orchid Seed announcing that their Seven Deadly Sins figures will no longer be Hobby Japan exclusives. Let's hope we see some prototypes soon!

Newest Figure Oh Transformers scans prove black is in

Newest Figure Oh Transformers scans prove black is in screenshot

Takara has a long history of taking existing Transformers figures and giving them a fresh coat of black paint. Sometimes it's to make a new character like when Jazz was repainted to make Targetmaster Stepper. Sometimes it's to show a character has been upgraded like when Soundwave became Soundblaster. And sometimes it's an evil (or occasionally good) clone of a character like Nemesis Prime. It's a good safety net, a way to extend the use of a mold, and really, it's hard to mess up black. They started this in the '80s and there's no reason to stop now.

First case in point is the figure that was formerly Gaia Unicron in the Takara's Transformers Prime line. He was already a menacing character in his original form, but paint him black and now he's Nightmare Unicron! Same figure, but he sure looks good in the new colors. Likewise Masterpiece MP-10 is getting his unsurprising black repaint as MP-10B Black Convoy previewed once again. Most Convoy/Optimus Prime figures get a black repaint of some sort so pretty much everyone saw this coming. Third piece of our tinted triad is Transformers Generations TG-14 Soundblaster, a black version of TG-13 Soundwave. Here's the kicker: Both Hasbro and Takara decided that rather than wait to do the repaint they'd just release them both at the same exact time. No kidding, the Hasbro version is in stores right now. It's actually really fun figure, I've got one on my desk right now.

What is new (mostly) is Super GT-03 Megatron. We haven't talked much, if at all, about the Super GT series. They're a line of transforming scale race cars based on real world racers. They're something of an evolution of the Alternity line, but at a larger scale similar to Alternators/Binaltech. Each figure is also accompanied by a fully articulated race queen figure based on a real person from the officially licensed race teams. I don't know much of anything about Super GT racing, but this is the #1 S Road REITO MOLA GT-R and is a remold of other figures in the series. We've seen art for the figure before, but this is our first look at the real thing.

The rest of the lineup for these scans include another look at MP-16 Frenzy & Buzzsaw, several new BeCool (Bot Shots) figures, some Arms Microns translucent redecos, and one more look at Encore 23 Fortress Maximus to remind you he's one big figure! Surprisingly absent are the upcoming Deluxe Generations figures, but there's always next month.

Albotas Goes To IndieCade East

For the first time ever, the popular IndieCade festival of independent games made its way to East Coast this past weekend. IndieCade has been going on over on the West Coast since 2009 and is considered by many to be the Sundance of video games, so I was pretty pumped to see it for myself.

It wasn’t quite the spectacle I was expecting. It was basically an open rec-hall sized room with a bunch of tables with computer monitors and iPads on them. Very few of the games on display were accompanied by anyone attached to the projects, so I started wondering just how badly these indie devs wanted people to know about their games. I also started wondering if I wasted a perfectly good Saturday and $200 in bus/taxi fare.

Thankfully, after doing a few laps around the main room and eyeballing computer monitors and TV screens from over people’s shoulders, I discovered a few gems.

Below are two videos of developers who were bodacious enough to answer some of my dumb questions and talk about their games.

THIRTY FLIGHTS OF LOVING

This is definitely a game that should be experienced at least once by anyone who appreciates video games as an art form. Huge thanks to Brendon Chu from Blendo Games for taking the time to speak with us for the vid. Be sure to keep an eye out on his upcoming retro cyberpunk game, Quadrilaterial Cowboy. If the official description doesn’t have you sold, I don’t know what will:

When you have a top-of-the-line hacking deck armed with a 56.6k modem and a staggering 256k RAM, it means just one thing: you answer only to the highest bidder.

And now for videos that I didn’t take, but trust me, these games are awesome.

INTERNATIONAL RACING SQUIRRELS

Rob Davis from Playniac was awesome enough to speak with us about his iPad racing sim that’s actually way more about micromanaging your finances and racers than actually racing. At first glance I expected just your standard Mario Kart ripoff. What I got instead was something more akin to Game Dev Story.

It would actually be pretty interesting to see this game’s financial system implemented in other genres - RPG’s for example: buy some weapons and armor using your credit card, and if you can’t make your payments on time, your gear gets repo’d mid-battle! Okay nevermind, that actually sounds terrible.

GUACAMELEE

I fell in love with the PS Vita version of this game when I played it at NYCC last year and was pleasantly surprised to find a PS3 version on display at IndieCade East. This is from Drinkbox Studios, the guys behind one of my favorite Vita titles, Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!!! It’s a MetroidVania style game that requires a certain finesse in stringing together melee attacks to navigate through levels. You can also bounce between dimension a-la Mighty Flip Champs. Mix that all up with some sweet mariachi chiptunes, amazing character designs, witty dialogue, and multiplayer co-op and you have an instant recipe for me not getting anything done ever. Sadly, no one from Drinkbox was around to talk to while I was there. Bummer.

HOKRA

This was hands-down the game that drew the biggest (and loudest) crowd. Sleek minimalist multiplayer sports action. The kind of game that makes players yell at each other while onlookers cheer them on.

GOROGOA

This was the game that stole the show for me. You basically just have to manipulate a puzzle on a 2x2 grid by zooming in & out and interacting with the levels. The artwork, the level design, the intricate precision of thought that went into each puzzle design - it’s brilliant and you should probably just stop whatever you’re doing and go download and play the free demo.

TENGAMI

This is essentially Super Brothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, but replace the funny with origami.

There were a buttload of other cool games on display, but there were a zillion other people crowding around and waiting in line to play them, so I had to squeeze in whatever I could before catching the bus back home. Head on over to the IndieCade site for a full list of games that were on display.

Hopefully I’ll be able to stick around for all three days next year as I can definitely see this sort of thing growing over the years. Plus, we really just need more cool geeky shit to indulge in on the East Coast.

KR-POP

This is a example of a collectible toy, not so much in the genre of "art toy" (although one could argue it is "art" based on Jeff Koon's work) but of "balloon sculpts" now immortalized as plastic, from a contemporary American artist. This might sit pretty interestingly in a museum shop, no? You decide folks!

Click HERE to read and join the Toysrevil Turns 8 Facebook Contest - with deadline for submissions ending past 12noon on February 27th, 2013 (+8 GMT / Singapore-time).
