Ice sculptures at Winterlude 2013

Ice sculptures at Winterlude 2013 screenshot

Winterlude is a very popular annual festival held in Ottawa and Gatineau, Canada.  It just celebrated its 35th convention and drew more than 600,000 guests this year. There were all kinds of activities for participants to enjoy, but one of the cooler activities for fans of figurines would be the ice sculpting competition.

A total of 26 sculptures came from 11 countries to be hosted at the competition held in Confederation Park in Ottawa. It's impressive to see the range of subject matter that sculptures worked on. There were sculptures of science fiction classics such as the Alien Queen, to ones of fish and flowers and giant hands.

There is a lot worth seeing and while I have a feeling these galleries barely scratch the tip of the iceberg if you will. Still, be sure to head over and check them out.

Check out Leo Firebrand's Hawken papercraft mech screenshot

When I was growing up, I always liked mechs and Mech Warrior. So when I was looking around for the latest news to bring you all this little paper craft custom by Leo Firebrand caught my eye. Seeing it made me feel all nostalgic and it reminded me that I don't own any real Macross or Batttletech model robots. Something I need to remedy one of these days.

This custom is based on a free to play video game called Hawken. I don't really recommend people get into free to play video games unless they really enjoy them, though; for some reason these have drained my wallet of more money than most regular games.

The model itself is well designed. It is cool to see a new robot that takes me back to my roots so easily. Also while I am sure this custom is made of really sturdy paper, it is impressive to see what can be done in papercraft form. This thing has wires and weapon pods galore. The detailing looks realistic enough that if someone told me it was sculpted plastic I would believe them without hesitation.

Leo did a really good job on this custom as he does on most of his work. If you want to see more of what he does, you should check out his blog here. Personally, I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

WHOOOP: Playground of the Gods @ Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery (Feb 20 launch)

'PLAYGROUND OF THE GODS' launches February 20th @ Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery, and is a one man show featuring the art of The Philippines-based WHOOOP - of which a series of artwork are being previewed here. From the imagery above-right, you might remember his Mr Brain Freeze-figure? Check out the images posted here, alongside event-press for the show:

whoop 1
PRESS: 'Belief and its subsequent betrayals are at the center of a storm, at the swirling core of street artist Whooop’s 3rd solo exhibit, Playground of The Gods. Both Demon and Deity are kindling in its wake, as shaken faith and answered prayer are filtered through brushstroke and unto canvas. In a year marked by personal turmoil and redemption, this is Whooops most powerful—and personal—showing yet.'
whoop 6
PRESS: 'Once again, the myriad pastels and prancing familiars that define his art arouse a serene, almost playful sensibility. It is inviting, even friendly. As if peering into a rabbit’s hole. But the depth of that space and the themes gnashing and thundering at its very bottom show his growth as an artist. The very same growth that he sees as an intrusion; he resists all the same. The veneer of whimsy then gives away, crackling and bending, its frayed edges peeling under the might of stories and experiences we only share in hushed whispers to each other.'
whoop 10
PRESS: 'Every piece in Whooop’s gallery has a beginning and a lasting finish... an imprint. It is in these fertile playgrounds that faith, morality, consequence, and the Lords and Inamoratas who inhabit them wage war upon each other.

The sprawling tales spun on canvas are many, lancing back between 2D and 3D planes: In one piece, strife can oftentimes spill to the floor, unto a chessboard where divine beings plot and scheme to have no other gods before them.

In another, an atomic cloud might freeze to bear life giving fruit.

Or you may find the Mona Lisa disruptively biting her lower lip...because she knows something you do not.'
whoop 4
PRESS: 'The art before you is haunting and intimate, in the same way distant playground chatter might draw you towards it. But you are not there. You are in Whooop’s realm. Colours painted in snowflake and magma come into focus, and begin to take shape. And you realize--with equal parts dread and delight--that gods frolic around you.'

Junior makes a grand debut at myplasticheart March 1 screenshot

Back at New York Comic Con, myplasticheart debuted the latest figure from MPHLabs, the pint-sized Junior from Lou Pimentel. There hasn't been much said about the Cranston-based sofubi figure since then, but that changed last night with the announcement of a release party for Junior Hellfire. The new colorway should look familiar because it's based off of the larger resin Cranston's original Hellfire colorway, just shrunk down a bit to pocket-size. He still won't come too cheap, though; according to the official MPH blog post, he's priced at US$34.99, the same price as the Ghost Blossom Junior from NYCC. It makes me wonder if it'll be a similar edition size of figures to the Ghost Blossom variant, too.

Junior's second debut is happening on Friday, March 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern at myplasticheart (210 Forsyth St., Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City). Lou will be in attendance at the party as well, and the first 20 people who buy Junior Hellfire at the party will get a Junior tote bag as well. If you're not lucky enough to be one of those folks, the remaining totes will be US$5.99 each.

As the owner of the first Ghost Blossom Junior from NYCC, I can say I'm pretty happy about how the Hellfire edition turned out and I'm hoping I'll have the chance to grab one. We'll let you know any details about when Junior Hellfire might be on the myplasticheart online shop, though my best guess is sometime after the party.

Toy-Review: Dream Tomica 'Tumbler' by Takara Tomy

BATMOBILE-TUMBLER-DREAM-TOMICA-01

Previously we had look at the Anton-Furst-designed Batmobile based on the 1989 Tim Burton film. Today we have a closer-look at the "Tumbler" ("Batmobile 4th", based on the Chris Nolan "Dark Knight" films!

Released in the "Dream Tomica" series by Takara Tomy, the model car is palm-sized, and somehow is not as "impressive" as it looks on the big screen (or even on the telly) as the imposing marauding "tank" of the Batmobile becomes a tiny peculiar-looking vehicle in-hand, IMHO.

The armor-plate details which made The Tumbler unique in a large-scaled format, somehow gets lost in a mess of plated panels on the scaled model car, with the edges not as crisp, given it's size … but of course I am just quibbling, it is after all a model toy car priced at SGD$15 each! LOL

BATMOBILE-TUMBLER-DREAM-TOMICA-02

If given a choice, I would pick the Anton-Furst gothic-noir style anytime! But as a representation of the Batmobiles of the Silver Screen, these are a decent pair indeed … and as well the only pair released hahaha

Nevertheless, I had a blast taking snaps of it, and you can view the individual pics HERE on my dedicated Facebook-album!

Max Factory blesses fans with their Belldandy figure

Max Factory blesses fans with their Belldandy figure screenshot

Mikatan's newest preview is of Max Factory's Belldandy and Holy Bell figure, which from past comments, has caught quite a few of your eyes. The figure is how Max Factory is celebrating 25 years of figure making, with this figure being based off a garage kit sculpted by Chieri-san 16 years ago.

It might seem small when you hear it's a 1/10-scale piece, but upon closer inspection, the detailing here is incredible. That's the case for both Belldandy and her angel Holy Bell, from the tops of Holy Bell's wings to the base both rise off of. I know I, for one, am quite impressed.

Belldandy and Holy Bell will go up for pre-order on Friday, Feb. 22, in Japan, so your wait isn't much longer. Will and of you be picking her up for your collections?
