Rad Video Game Books At IndieCade East

Museum of the Moving Image in NYC has a pretty awesome gift shop with a hefty selection of books on all sorts of stuff the typical Albotian would be in to: movies, art, and of course, video games.

I had a pretty tough time deciding on which book to get, but I wound up going with Nintendo Magic mainly because I like the face Satoru Iwata is making in the picture up top. I kind of regret the decision because it’s only $7.98 on Amazon (only 2 left in stock as I write this!), but whatevs.

Any readers out there have any of the other books pictured? If so, let us know how they are in the comments.

Panicon + Samus = Cool Cosplay

Here’s an excellent Samus cosplay by neko-tin, that merges Panicon (I don’t know what that is, truthfully) and Samus Aran of the Metroid series. Makes for a cool photoshoot, really. Check out the rest of the Samus photos at neko-tin’s Deviant Art page.

Welcome back again to Custom Made Monday, our spotlight on things going on in the world of custom figures. This week's rundown is a little bit shorter than last week's, but it's also just as impressive. In part, that's because we have some great custom action figures on display, as well as a figma or two, and of course, a few vinyl figures.

So who's customized what, and just who is that familiar looking face in the header? Hit the jump to find out!

    Djeadpool by PackRat Studios

As we normally do, we start with our header figure, a new custom from PackRat Studios. Taking inspiration from Django Unchained and more so the Django films that came before it, PackRat have merged the movie character with the Merc with a Mouth. Djeadpool is a totally impressive figure: there's three different heads for it, including the masked and unmasked Bowen versions and another custom masked version. There's also a diorama backdrop for Djeadpool, and lots of accessories: a cowboy hat, katanas, tomahawks, rifles, cannon revolvers, and six-shooters.

The thing I like the most, though, is the coffin. In a clear homage to the original Django films (spoilers ahead), the coffin holds a Gatling gun that Djeadpool can make use of. Everything fits inside a custom-fitted briefcase carrying case, and looks super snazzy.

Best news? If you want him, go and bid on him. The auction ends Tuesday.

Usagi Yojimbo, Krang Android and Slash figures from PackRat Studios

We've also got some more Turtles customs from PackRat, including Usagi Yojimbo (created by legendary artist Stan Sakai and one of the Turtles' cross-over guests); Slash; and Krang's android body, version 2.0. Krang's android body looks the most spectacularly detailed, but man, that Usagi Yojimbo figure is spot-on. It looks less like a custom and more like an actual released figure.

Cotton Candy Munny (and other customs) from melodreama

There's also a few customs from melodreama to spotlight. Chief among those is the Cottom Candy Munny, a 4-inch version with a sweet treat in hand. Yum!

Taeko Kondo and Noriko Isobe figmas by Matsuzakaya Poru

If you're a Girls und Panzer fan, then here's two custom figmas to check out. Each one is based on a character from the series, and compared to their appearances in the anime, I'd have to say they're pretty spot-on. You can tell they're customs because the hair doesn't quite look the same as it does on figmas (it actually looks a little smoother sculpted), but I have to say I'm impressed with the finished product. Any of you wish these were actual figma and not just customs?

    Captain Thor-Man by Nikejerk

Finally, in this week's shortened version, we take a look at Nikejerk's new superhero chimera. Using the Plastic Booty Thor resin figure as a base, and asked to combine Thor, Captain America and Iron Man into one figure, Nikejerk did just that. The helmet, face mask, left arm and head are all new sculpts by Nikejerk, and magnets hold most of those new pieces in place. The cape is also removable, if you'd like to see it, and there's an alternate left arm to display the piece with. Check out the gallery for a few other shots, and click here to browse through all the photos!

[That wraps up this week's installment of Custom Made Monday! If you have any customs you'd like to see featured, or just spot something that's eye-catching and fits the feature, be sure to e-mail us and let us know!]

  • 02/18/13--08:41: Funny Face: Think Pink
  • Like all Integrity Toy's premium dolls, Think Pink arrived nicely packaged and presented in the box. All the Funny Face boxes are pink inside with pink stands.

    Think Pink Mini Gift Set
Description from the W Club posting:
In "Think Pink", lead character Maggie Prescott, Fashion Editor extraordinaire, is out to lay new fashion ground for her ever demanding readers and fashion lovers all over the world. As she starts exploring fashion trends to create a bold new look for the next issue of her fashion magazine, she and her "oh so fashionable" assistants break into this most visually stunning musical number... Totally convincing us to THINK PINK! The Think Pink dressed doll mini-gift set represents one of Maggie's fashionably pink clad assistants!

"Think Pink" is a 12" fully articulated vinyl doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes featuring the FR: Monogram body (with Victoire Roux legs) and the Imogen head sculpt standing in for one of the dancers in the "Think Pink" musical number. The mini-gift set includes two complete looks from the "Think Pink" musical number in FUNNY FACE. The first look in the set is composed of a two-piece bright pink business suit with a white pill-box hat, short gloves and matching shoes, while the second show-stopping look is composed of a pink satin two-piece gown with a transformable pink fur peplum that turns into a cape, just like the one in the movie! Pink opera length gloves, bright pink satin shoes and a jewelry set complete this look. It also includes an alternate set of hands, a doll stand and a certificate of authenticity. For adult collectors 14 years and up.
The promotional photos, posted elsewhere on this blog, accurately represent the contents of the set.
This doll reminds me so much of the Lana Turner Hollywood Royalty dolls from a few years ago.
The necklace is composed of clear crystal beads. Her earrings are rhinestone studs which is a little odd as they usually relate to the other jewelry the doll is provided with. The faux fur is very soft and pretty. I couldn't get it to look quite like IT's cape photo but I like it anyway.
The fabrics are lovely and the fashion is constructed nicely although there is a fit issue with the day dress. The bodice is too large and there's a great deal of excess fabric. In addition, the thickness of the fabric plus the seam allowances and lining, create a hill on her shoulders.
I tried the dress on a regular Fashion Royalty body, below, and although the bust took up some of the slack, it was still too large.
When the jacket is put on the doll, the shoulder line slopes downward and makes most of her neck disappear.
I tried very briefly to put her long gloves on and met with resistance. I do not have patience for gloves like that so her hands and forearms remain bare. She also comes with wrist length leatherette gloves. They met with the same fate as the long ones.
    Cute shoes.

Happily for me, she does not have the Poppy Parker leg. I will be harvesting her body for one of my Jo Stockton figures.
