Critics Consensus: Aliens: Colonial Marines

Today saw the release of the Aliens title everyone has been waiting for since forever. I’m not too sure why so many people were excited for Aliens: Colonial Marines at all, considering the previous entries published by Sega weren’t so great, plus the title just looks like another generic space marine video game. But hey, it had a sweet ass collector’s edition release and it has the title “Aliens,” in it, so I guess that was enough to intrigue the lot of gamers.

Reviews came out and I think it’s safe to say that critics didn’t really have a mixed message here, as most major gaming sites have pretty much bashed this game to bits.

It’s empty and nostalgic, meticulous and dated. More importantly, it’s hands-off. Like a museum, Colonial Marines is at its best when you’re admiring the view. The moment you attempt to reach out to interact you’re met with a barrier, reminding you that you’re there to look, not to touch.” - Hollander Cooper, GamesRadar

“The problem lies with the aliens themselves; they’re not smart enough to hunt in packs or take you by surprise, they just wilfully hurl themselves in front of your short, controlled bursts. There’s never a feeling of being outwitted or outmanoeuvred, just outraged that you’ve sat down to take on some deadly xenos in one of sci-fi’s most iconic settings and somehow ended up in the equivalent of a clunky, coin-operated shooting gallery.” - Tristan Ogilvie, IGN

Take away the Aliens license, and you’ve got a shooter that has no reason to exist.” - Jeff Cork, GameInformer

Unlike the movies, which relied on atmosphere, ominous sounds, and sharp surprises to frighten the bejeezus out of you, the life of these space marines is far more Doom-like. Xenomorphs in the story campaign don’t stalk you — they just lunge, which negates what made them so scary in the first place. Replace them with velociraptors, zombies, or demons, and you’d have essentially the same game.” - Chuck Osborn, Official Xbox Magazine

If Gearbox’s quality scale has Borderlands 2 at one end and Duke Nukem at the other, Colonial Marines sits somewhere in the middle.” - Leon Hurley, Official PlayStation Magazine UK

Aliens: Colonial Marines famously considers itself the canonical sequel to Aliens, but the quality of its campaign reduces such a claim to little more than arrogant posturing, as this bumbling fan fiction dares compare itself to one of the most respected science fiction horror films of the 20th century. It barely deserves a comparison with Battlefield EarthClocking in at just under five hours, and containing very little in the way of actual story, Colonial Marines quickly establishes itself as nowhere near notable enough to be the ‘true sequel’ it claims to be.” - Jim Sterling, Destructoid

Bottom line: Don’t fucking play this game. It’s generic, the A.I. is absolutely retarded, the graphics are acceptable at best, and it’s got an extremely short campaign experience that ends with a terribly anti-climatic ending. The only thing Colonial Marines has going for it is its use of “Aliens,” in its title, which should be the only reason why anyone would glance at this in the first place. Fans of the series may overcome a nostalgic feeling for the franchise, but it’s safe to say this isn’t even worthy of a thought.

Oh, and it should also be noted that EGM has the sole positive review I’ve seen of this title.

“All things considered, Colonial Marines is a consistently solid, occasionally spectacular shooter that does more than enough to honor the Alien name. It was going to be a tough task from the onset, but despite a ton of potential pitfalls for the talented team at Gearbox, they’ve gone a long way toward reminding us that, for folks who love the craft of building great games, the best challenges only seem impossible. Like most successful license-based games, Aliens: Colonial Marines is much more than a loving homage; it serves as one of the most robust story-driven co-op experiences to date. The concept definitely has room to grow, but as maiden voyages go, Colonial Marines is a clear winner.” - Brandon Justice, EGM

IndieCade Kicks Off This Friday

If you’re in the NY area this weekend, you should probably plan on getting your righteous butt over to The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria for the first ever IndieCade on the east coast.

The festival takes place Friday – Sunday, Feb. 15 – 17. Special guests include Kris Piotrowski (creator of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP) and Doug Wilson (Johann Sebastien Joust).

Activities include:

  • Night Games, a Saturday evening of game play over two floors of the Museum
  • A New York-centric game design challenge: students and faculty from NYU Game Center and Parsons The New School for Design will face-off in a real-time competition to design a video game in one hour
  • Game Slam, in which game makers present their works and an ongoing festival Show and Tell, inviting attendees to share their own games and to receive feedback
  • A 10-game arcade tournament
  • A festival-long game jam, in which invited participants work day-and-night to build a game, culminating in a presentation of the completed games

Oh yeah, and I’ll be there taking pics, video, and passing out free high-fives. If there’s anything you’d like us to cover, let us know in the comments.

See you there!

DAVEWEB-CUSTOM-MUNNY-01 DAVEWEB-CUSTOM-MUNNY-02

A trio of outsmART Originals news updates all in a tidy blogpost for YOU, dear readers, starting with an update of the custom 7" Munny by Dave Webb - meant for a giveaway when you (pre)order a Decorum tee, and it is looking pretty intensively rad here!

OUTSMART-DORKNESS-01 OUTSMART-DORKNESS-02

From Forces of Dorkness comes the Tusken Idol T-Shirt (seen above). As a bonus, the artist will also be awarding three lucky customers an original resin creation as thanks for supporting his work. All you need to do is to preorder a Tusken Idol tee and you will be automatically entered for a chance to win a Buddha Fett, Bantha Buddy or Leia of Guadalupe original resin creation.
""Be it scoundrel or scholar, I was drawn in by both Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies as a kid. So I thought, "what's better than mashing those two?", and my response is a piece I call "Tusken Raiders of the Lost Ark". Our little golden buddy comes from the temples of Tatooine deep in the dunes and about as far away from Mos Eisley as one can get. Not only does it have the face of a Tusken Raider, but he's also riding the most loyal of the beasts of the desert, the Bantha." ~added Scott Kinnebrew about the genesis of the design.
DGPH_0001_WIDE_SHOT

And finally, fresh from DGPH is the ULTRAMOLE T-Shirt Release! This and all tees are available to pre-order via outsmartoriginals.storenvy.com and/or www.outsmartoriginals.com - with all designs available only for a specific period, so don't dally your decisions, and buy away!
PRESS: "Got Kaiju? Godzilla, Gamera, Gorgo...? Step aside and make room for the newest character to take the global stage of destruction - introducing ULTRAMOLE! From the creative Argentinian design group DGPH, comes the tiny hero with big might - Ultramole. DGPH based their new character on classic Japanese icons: incredible Kaiju monsters and oversized super heroes in tights. It s a tribute to those misunderstood monsters and heroes who fall in the battlefield of global domination."

I have a bunch of To-Fu products I had planned to blog about, but with the existence of this limited edition Snake To-Fu (purchasable here for US$7.90 per) celebrating the "Year of the Snake" … I would just subtly add in the other 2-inch tall figurines including Bartender, DJ and Drunk To-Fu (all listed here for US$7.60 each). Butterfly Trilogy - New E-Pattern By Inspired Creations By D

My sister just loves sewing, quilting, flowers, gardens, animals, and insects - like butterflies.  So, I shouldn't have been surprised when she designed a butterfly quilt trilogy e-pattern.    Of course I LOVE everything she does but I have to say that she just keeps getting better and better and better.  How beautiful are they?

Here's what she had to say about her e-pattern:

Butterflies, butterflies and more butterflies. BUTTERFLY TRILOGY is my second pattern in my trilogy series. I absolutely love the Spring when the gardens are coming to life. I have so many beautiful things going on at once; but one of those things I really enjoy seeing is the Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies flying from flower to flower. Living in the North I don't get to see the beautiful Blue Morpho butterfly as it stays in the Southern most zones, but because it is my favorite color, I thought it was the right thing to include as the third item in this trilogy. 3 designs in 1 pattern; make one or all three. Keep one for yourself and give two as gifts or keep all three, or give all three as gifts - so many possibilities in 1 pattern!

"BUTTERFLY TRILOGY" is 18 pages containing a digital picture of the framed fabric wall art, step-by-step digital picture instructions along with detailed written instructions for creating the frame or quilt - fabric wall art; full size pattern pieces with both forward and reverse pages for easy tracing onto iron-on transfer paper as well as instructions for creating the wood frame. Because I quilted these particular patterns for myself, I also included instructions for hanging them on a dowel, as shown on the cover. A material list is on the back of the pattern cover, which includes pictures of the fabric used to help in fabric selection.
I hope you enjoy creating "BUTTERFLY TRILOGY".
