The King of Monsters vs A God

I’d hate to see Tokyo after this battle. Artist Patrick Towers brings us a bone chilling match up that pits Godzilla vs EVA Unit-01.

I’d love to see this film. Even more interesting is the cultural contexts that are contained within each film. Godzilla originally dealt with the nuclear attacks and trying to come to terms with that. Evangelion draws a line from that in dealing with fate and the unpredictability of human life. One could argue that the mech genre was born in response to the Kaiju genre.

In any case, this is truly awesome art. Check out more of Patrick Towers’ work at DeviantArt and like him on Facebook.

Video: What Do Those Often-Cited Studies Really Say About Video Games and Violent Behavior?

With the media storm scrambling to find a scapegoat for the all too often occurrences of gun violence (instead of looking deep within the rooted issues of our culture) video games have once again come under fire for being violent.

Luckily, the fantastic news show The Young Turks is here to shed some light on what the often cited-by-conservative-news-monkey studies really have to say.

Spoiler: The studies actually go as far to cite the problematic testing techniques and hard to define aspects of the studies. Even more surprising is the fact that these studies, which are cited quite a lot, even note that there are many other factors that attribute to violent behavior.

One of those factors is access to guns.

Again, the same pundits that try to use video games as a scapegoat in order to A) keep the gun lobby strong and B) prevent people from looking deeper at the real issues, are in fact citing from a source that notes that guns are more of an important factor in violent behavior than video games are.

However, i think that the real thing to take away from this is the fact that there needs to be more research into the issues of violent behavior and video games. The more hard facts we have, the easier it will be to defend ourselves.

You can follow the Young Turks on Twitter and on Youtube.

On the PBS program, Pioneers of Television, this week they featured an episode called "Superheroes". It covers the early history of the appearance of comic book characters on television and also crosses many eras: "Superman" in the 1950s, "Batman" in the 1960s, "Wonder Woman" and "The Incredible Hulk" in the '70s and "The Greatest American Hero" in the '80s.

S.H.Figuarts Golden Darkness pre-orders finally shine

S.H.Figuarts Golden Darkness pre-orders finally shine screenshot

It's been a bit over three months since Bandai first revealed their Golden Darkness S.H.Figuarts figure from the ecchi harem manga and anime series To LOVEru Darkness. With nothing much else to go buy some people were questioning if this would ever see the light of day.

Well the day has finally come, pre-orders are here! ¥4,500 will score you a sweet Golden Darkness figure with three different expressions: neutral, blushing, and let's call the last one 'embarrassed'. She also comes with a bunch of bladed option parts for her hands and hair along with one of her beloved books and equally beloved taiyaki pastries.

It's a great looking figure that should be showing up in May 2013. Best part is that at 140mm she's at the same scale as similar figma characters so no worries about blending lines. I'm going to get one myself. Now that we've finally got all of the release details we've been waiting for hopefully we'll get some news about the white version that appeared at Jump Festa about a month ago.

The Good Smile Cafe in Akihabara is a place that I frequent - we do broadcasts and hold Culture Japan Night Tokyo here too - check it out - tis an awesome place to be ^o^

Today we are filming with comrade Julie Watai - our multi talented actress and photographer.

I know that there are anime or maid themed cafes around the world but how about in your neck of the woods?
I also know that some of these themed cafes outside of Japan dont do too well - some of them close down after a short period of being in business.

What is the hook for you to regularly visit an anime themed cafe? The food? Atmosphere? Merchandise?
There is a poll embedded in this article.
