Mattel's Rorschach will give you an inkblot test screenshot

The first of Mattel's 6-inch DCU Watchmen figures will be sold during Matty Collector's January sale next week. We now have photos (and video) of both the figure and his cool new packaging.

Rather than receive a plain white labeled mailer box, the Watchmen figures will have themed mailer boxes that feature the iconic doomsday clock (seen only in the video). The actual packaging (pictured) differs greatly from Matty's usual offerings, which almost always figure a window showing off the figure. The packaging seems designed to be reusable, as it opens along the side and features a molded plastic tray to hold the figure in place. Additionally, Rorschach features an over-sized trading card (larger than the figure itself!) with the character's image on one side and a bio on the other (see gallery).

While I'm impressed by how much effort Mattel has put into the packaging and extras, these things really stand in stark contrast to the figure itself. Rorschach uses the older conventions (and presumably features a fair deal of recycled parts) seen in Mattel's DCU imprints for years. The only difference is that the character, who once may have been able to appear in DC Universe Classics wave, is being sold exclusively through Matty Collector and is priced US$25 as opposed to the US$16 MSRP that we see at retail for their other DCU items. That said, given the fan demand, I imagine that many people are more than willing to pay it.

Rorschach comes with a grappling gun and a Watchmen-themed stand. He'll be available for order on January 15th.

If there's such a thing as vaporware in toys...I feel that Shocker Toys' Indie Spotlight Series 2 would definitely qualify. Actually, Shocker is fairly notorious for delays and unreleased collectibles. Ask the folks who are still waiting for the Indie Spotlight Series 2 figures that they pre-ordered in 2008. What's that? They're no longer Shocker [...]
