  • 12/31/12--21:02: 2013 New Years Greetings!

  • Happy new year folks! Hows your new year celebrations?
But before you answer that, have you ever thought to yourself why we celebrate the new year? Is it because we want to celebrate what we have achieved in the previous year? Is it because we are celebrating what we want to do in the up n coming year? Is it because we are celebrating the fact that most of us get time off work/school?

If you are celebrating, then please take time out to think about why you are doing so. Have you made a list of what you achieved in 2012? Does the list look good to you? If "yes" then that's great! You certainly have something to celebrate!

If "no" then do you really feel comfortable celebrating even though you have not reached your goals in 2012? Make sure you do everything to ensure that the future you can look back at your 2013 list so that you can have something to truly celebrate this time next year.

As for me - I think my team and I achieved and learned quite a bit in 2012 - but will list that up in a separate post because I dont have time right now - heading into another meeting in half hour ><

And here is my new years prezzie for you - starting from now, on the 1st of each month, I'll be distributing parts of the MoeCalendar which we sold as a poster at Comic Fiesta. This month is Eiji Seiun, Retrokyu and Mirai Suenaga in their new year gear. The 2560px x 1600px image lives here - should be big enough to cover the majority of desktops and also big enough to print on your home printer - only for your personal use please!

New years in Japan is typically celebrated over 3 days from 1st - 3rd of January. Many folks travel back to their home town to spend time with family. Folks also traditionally visit a shrine or temple to make a prayer for the up n coming year.

We are still in Malaysia at the moment and is our first time in 13 years we spent new year outside of Japan. From here we travel up to Penang to have Culture Japan Night and have meetings with the Penang Tourism Board. From there we fly direct to Bankok where I will be giving a keynote and have a booth at the Thailand Game Show. I return to Tokyo mid January.

Have been in Kuala Lumpur for about 2 weeks now and have been going through back to back meetings with various folks regarding TV, logistics, investment, legal, transportation, banking, manufacture an so on - and yes its all about Mirai Suenaga ^o^

Meanwhile back in Japan - this is what we would have been doing if we was in Japan right now - at the local shrine to make a prayer for the next year and say thanks for the previous one.
You can see how folks in Japan spend new year by taking a gander through the following photo articles:-
-Japanese New Year 2006 (Meiji Jingu in Harajuku)
-Japanese New Year 2007 (Sensouji in Asakusa)
-Japanese New Year 2008 (Meguro Fudouson)
-Japanese New Year 2009 (Meguro Fudouson)
-Japanese New Year 2010 (Meguro Fudouson)
-Japanese New Year 2011 (Meguro Fudouson)
-Japanese New Year 2012 (Meguro Fudouson)

Thank you for your continued support - it always means a lot to me and is one of the things that continues to drive me. Here is hoping you had a great 2012 and an even better 2013!

MS Rhino to crash through a wall near you very soon screenshot

Move over, Snake; 2013 may be the year of the Rhino. The Marvel Select Rhino seems to finally be charging into retailers this month (for some reason I thought he was due out last month), earning the coveted slot of the first Rhino figure of the year.

Occasionally regarded as a poor hero's Juggernaut, the lovable lummox known as Rhino is a lumbering locomotive who goes out of his way to try to run over man-sized spiders. There's something insanely likable about Rhino which has given the character a minor cult status among Spidey fans. Sure, he's something of a one-note joke villain but he pulls it off with a fair amount of style... for a grown man in a rhino costume (which, to be fair, isn't even outlandish by Spidey rogue standards). Despite being one of Spider-Man's most often recurring video game villains and a constant animated series adversary, poor Rhino has yet to score a movie role. Apparently in Hollywood he ranks under the likes of Sandman and even Electro (to be played by Jamie Foxx in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel. I'm not joking.).

The Marvel Select Rhino stands about 8.5 inches tall, giving the character the sort of size not seen in the Marvel Legends line or its spin-offs. Granted, the "Fiercest Foes" box set Rhino was a good size but sometimes you just want one of these bruisers to tower over their arch-heroes in a display (something for which you often have to turn to Diamond Select Toys!). The articulation seems typical of Marvel Select's more recent larger entries so expect it to be adequate. Of course, the real draw here is the size and decent amount of detail afforded to Rhino besides, well, just him being who he is. Marvel Select Rhino is still available for pre-order (or just plain order soon enough) at a number of places. His list price is a very reasonable US$22.

Fun fact: a group of rhinos is called a crash.

The Sazabi will see a Gunpla update in 2013...the SD one screenshot

You can make any year special by calling it an anniversary of something. With the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, that could be just about any year. For 2013, it's the 25th anniversary of the film Char's Counterattack. The celebration got started a bit early with the extremely popular release of the Master Grade Nu Gundam ver. Ka but that certainly won't be the only kit to see a new version. Seen in the shadows is an update to a much older kit, with this release being the SD BB Senshi Sazabi.

While we're only seeing this from the back, I can already see the updates to the old kit. The shield has much more detail before and the backpack actually has some depth to it. The kit has much better proportions than the original SD and its legs actually exist this time around. If we're lucky, maybe the funnels will have a gimmick to them as well. I know some will want a MG 2.0 or ver. Ka of the Sazabi, but I don't expect that until December like the Nu. As a fan of SD kits, I can't wait to get my hands on this and it will be a much-needed update for the SD lineup. For now, we'll just have to over-analyze this one image.

It never was: The lost toys of SD Gundam Force screenshot

You utter the name of SD Gundam Force to most Gundam fans and the reaction isn't too pretty. It was a show purposely aimed at kids and people got upset over a children's television show. Even with its shortcomings, I really liked a lot of the designs. Commander Sazabi, the Mercurius and Vayeate, and Deathscythe were my favorite designs. Unfortunately, the toy line became peg warmers, stores didn't want to stock them, and the show was eventually cancelled before the second season began on Toonami. The show didn't do to well in Japan either, so the remainder of its toyline was cancelled as well. In today's find, we get a look at some of the photos of what was planned for the next series of toys for Season 2.

What was planned was a couple of updates to existing figures and some that never got a release. The Dark Axis trio of Zapper Zaku, Grappler Gouf and Destroyer Dom got updated equipment. What I really regret that didn't see the light of day were the Commander Sazabi and Red Zako. The figures themselves weren't bad, just not what people were used to. I can assure you they are durable figures as my 1 year old tosses them around and they're still working.

I can pretty much guarantee that these will never see the light of day, but it's interesting to see what could have been, especially that Commander Sazabi. If you'd like to grasp onto a infinitely ridiculous amount of hope that these may come out, 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of SDGF.
