Star Wars figures and dominoes enter Toy Hall of Fame screenshot

I wonder if the Magic 8 Ball predicted this outcome or if Clue came to this conclusion? Both of those were nominated for the Toy Hall of Fame class of 2012, but ultimately lost out to Star Wars action figures and dominoes. Star Wars marks only the second time action figures have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since starting in 1998, the first being G.I.Joe. Star Wars action figures first launched in 1978 following the rampaging success of the fist Star Wars film. The figures proved to be in such high demand Kenner was forced to produce their famous "Early Bird" promotion. Parents were encouraged to buy an empty box for Christmas with a certificate that guaranteed them figures when the line was finally launched. This was basically the first figure pre-order. There was a 10-year break between 1985 and 1995, but we've seen figures on the shelves ever since so the rest is history.

Dominoes are one of those things that most kids have played with, but probably not the way that was originally intended. For kids (and even a lot of adults) its a lot more fun to stand them up and knock them down than it is to actually learn the rules of the game. They join the list of other non-traditional play things that have made their way into the Hall of Fame such as the stick, the cardboard box, and the blanket. The Hall of Fame isn't just about toys and games, but about things children have played with that have stood the test of time, fostered the imagination, or been a major innovation in play. Seeing as how dominoes have been around for some 700 years I'd say they've certainly got the longevity part down.

Aside from the Magic 8 Ball and the board game Clue nominees include green army men, the pogo stick, the tea set, Twister, and sidewalk chalk. And it's never too early to think about 2013, nominations are already being accepted and anyone can make one.

Looking for a purrfect new Tamaki? screenshot

Curious as a cat for the next inevitable Tamaki figure? To Heart's lovely lass will be arriving in May with this upcoming release from Orca! As one might expect, they've foregone any sense of modesty and are playing up the cheesecake to the hilt with a kitty-themed getup.

No doubt, I'm a bit of a fan. I do think her ears could be a bit larger, however, as they do get a bit overshadowed by her own hair. Still, it's an interesting design, particularly with the fur texture covering her bikini rather than a blank design. I also love the addition of her toying with her tail, making it a noticeable part of the figure rather than just hanging back. There's certainly no denying the appeal of that flashy crimson collar, either.

My only concern is in the expression she's wearing. Perhaps it's just me, but she seems a bit "under the influence" as it were. Whether it's a small price to pay for a fairly appealing figure is up to you, but be ready to drop the ¥7,500 to pick her up.

  • 11/16/12--14:07: Chickenpants 600!
  • I find myself at somewhat of a loss for words. Six. Hundred. SIX. HUNDRED. Sixhundred?

That's I've made 600 of anything still kind of amazes me.
I feel a little bad that I don't have more fanfare to throw at this little guy. He's a wee bit fancier than a normal CP, sure. But he's not wearing a special outfit. I haven't put together prize packs. I don't even have a celebratory sale. (Not YET, anyway...) There's kind of a lot going on right now.
On the other hand, I feel like he's sort of a return to my Chickenpants roots. No fancy outfit. Just chickeny goodness.

You can check him out here if you're so inclined.

There is a reason having a great time is also called ‘having a ball’-and that reason is because balls used to be a huge deal back in the day. Dressing up fancy and going to some palace or some such, it was a big deal ok? Well that’s literally where the term came from anyways, [...]

Panda-monium has absolutely broken out in Steiffgal's house over the most recent addition to her ever growing hug.  Here's the story of the arrival of a larger than life new Steiff companion worthy of the red carpet treatment!

Good things come in all size packages... and the courier arrives around 10:00am with one extra-large sized delivery!  He personally drove the item from Indiana to Massachusetts, so the two of them got to be good friends crossing the country together.

The anticipation builds as the surprise makes its way towards the house...

Just bear-ly fitting up the narrow, curved staircase....

At last landing at its final destination, the bedroom (which is in the process of being painted in honor of his arrival.)

Now for the great unveiling... just what do we have here?  Watch the video to find out!

This bit of advice doesn't suck... always thoroughly clean your new Steiff arrivals carefully, including a light vacuuming...

...and a gentle scrub with a white cotton washcloth and a dilute solution of Woolite in warm water.

So just who is this prehistorically sized panda?  In reality, Steiffgal isn't 100% certain, as she can find no reference to him in any Steiff reference book.  And his previous owners don't know a thing about him either; they found him in a storage bin in Indiana and put him up for auction shortly after.  Here's what we DO know about him:  he's 190 cm, standing, unjointed, and made entirely from long shaggy mohair - except for his ears, which are made from black dralon.  His face, which is made from slightly shorter white mohair, is detailed with large brown and black pupil eyes and a hand embroidered black nose and mouth.  His mouth has a little additional grey airbrushed highlights around his jaw.  Panda's foot pads are made from heavy plastic material, while his paw pads are made from trivera velvet material.  They are carefully airbrushed with authentic looking hand prints.  He has four rubber claws on each of his hands and feet.  Panda keeps his standing balance via a metal support stand attached to his backside.

It's not so black and white when it comes to identifying a rarity like this.  However, it is Steiffgal's best guess, given panda's size, appearance, and body shape, that he is a modification of Steiff's Studio standing Braunbaer or Brown Bear that was in the line from 1972 through 1980.  Brown bear is pictured above; his full story can be found here. Brown bear is also standing and 190 cm tall.  His body is made from a brown knitted fur material.  His face is made from short tan colored mohair and is detailed with brown and black pupil eyes, a black leather-like nose, and a few airbrushed highlights.  And, like Studio panda, his paw pads are made from a trivera velvet like material, have airbrushed "paw prints" on them, and are complemented by lifelike claws.  Studio Brown bear was made from 1972 through 1980; in 1972 only he was sold exclusively in the United States.

And, just in case you were wondering, ALMOST everyone here was excited to welcome new Studio panda to the hug.

Steiffgal hopes this unveiling of her Steiff studio panda has been a larger than life experience for you!

Thanks to Meteor Operation who have posted a bevy of new images fro the X2 Toys Transformers Prime Soundwave Red Power-Bat and Power-Beak third party figures. These are the the mass market figures in red plastic that are a different release from the chrome / silver convention exclusives we saw previously. Get lots of good looks at Power-Bat and Power-Beak that are much more colorful and IMO look better than the chrome version. These guys come with some special resting pods that act as feet for the Power-Bots to stand on their own.
