We're in the midst of the Metal Gear Survive beta. How's it going so far?

While I haven't had time to play just yet, I have to admit, I like what I'm seeing of the wave-based co-op survival title strictly in a dumb-fun-with-friends sort of way. This game probably shouldn't exist, but it does, and there's seemingly some joy to be had if you can take it for what it is. (Assuming the inherent always-online requirement and microtransactions don't sour the whole thing.)

As Ray puts it, Metal Gear Survive is "like Dead Rising on that Fox Engine crack."

Also, quick aside: I'll be amazed if Konami doesn't eventually add a battle royale mode or explore that in a separate spin-off. Metal Gear Solid V's mechanics and gunplay would lend themselves so well.

Here's a ridiculous trailer for Metal Gear Survive screenshot

Genesis has been a Super Smash Bros. eSports staple since 2009. It kicked off in the San Francisco area every few years (2009, 2011, 2013) before taking a massive hiatus, only to return in 2017 and announce dates for 2018.

This year things are really looking up. The tournament organizers over at Genesis have announced that this year, they're officially partnering up with Nintendo of America as a sanctioned event. Nintendo has had a cagey history with eSports, but with pushes for Splatoon and even ARMS, they've lightened up a little (the same goes for streaming and the like with their Nintendo partner program).

Just like last year 2018's tourney will be held in San Jose, California, and will feature Smash 64, Melee, and Smash Wii U alongside of six other games.

HAMSTER take another step toward their goal of releasing 800 classic arcade games with one of the most recognisable names of all-time: Double Dragon, which launched this week on Nintendo Switch.

Released by Technos in 1987, the scrolling brawler is a oft-mentioned memory by those who recall converging in dimly-lit arcades to guide brothers Billy and Jimmy through the mean streets, beating down members of the Black Warrior gang, on a quest to rescue kidnapped buddy Marion.

I repeat (ad-nauseum) that I was fortunate enough to grow up in the arcade era. I spent most of my formative years pumping coins into countless games, many of which I still revisit today. I do have fond memories of Double Dragon, but I personally don't think it holds up well today. The genre would be perfected in following years with games like Final Fight, Vendetta and Violent Storm, all of which stole the template of the Technos' classic and markedly reworked it.

Undeniably, Double Dragon is absolutely a trend-setter and a genuinely iconic title, more than deserving of a place in the arcade Hall of Fame. Today, it still has a cool soundtrack, fun visuals and pulls on serious nostalgia strings. This re-release features local co-op, so you and a chum can play through a legitimate slice of video game history.

Double Dragon is available now on Nintendo Switch, priced at $8.

Hatsune Miku's second foray in virtual reality is your first chance to dance alongside her. Whereas Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live put you in the crowd for one of her concerts, this new venture is more about mimicking her moves.

Degica Games has revealed Hatsune Miku VR which will release in "early 2018" on Steam VR for both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. There are eight songs and two difficulty settings planned for launch, but the developer notes that more tracks will be added post-release. Hatsune Miku VR will have English, Japanese, and Chinese support (among other unlisted languages that the developer simply lumps together as "and more").

Unlike other rhythm-based Hatsune Miku titles, this one makes use of VR controls. That means no standard d-pad and face buttons to lean on. You're gonna have to dance just like her. No pressure but she's, like, really good.

Despite being one of the biggest names in Japanese gacha gaming, Cygames' RPG Granblue Fantasy doesn't seem all that well-known outside the otaku scene. That's to be expected, given the game is theoretically Japan-exclusive. This status quo is one that Cygames has opted to keep to for some reason, despite the game being playable internationally (via browser) and having a fully-integrated English localization available.

Whatever the motivation for keeping the main Granblue game in relative obscurity, I hope they don't sleep on pushing Granblue Fantasy Project Re: LINK across the pond. Announced long ago and being developed by Platinum, whatever Re: LINK ends up being called is looking really pretty, as evidenced by some direct-feed gameplay footage below.

First aired at Granblue Festival (yes, they have their own con), the footage shows character Katalina strolling through a picturesque town, encountering fully rendered 3D versions of generic NPCs that in the main game are just 2D cutouts. Party members Percival, Rackam, and Io are added to the party for a big fight against a large boss, showing off the action flair Platinum are known for. Notable is how closely Re:LINK adapts the style of the main game, from the font of the damage numbers to their attempts to emulate the vividly colored special effects used by art director Hideo Minaba. Even the gameplay feels informed by the source, featuring a "Chain Burst" special effect that triggers when the party unleashes their ultimate attacks in quick succession.

It remains to be seen what the rest of the game will be like outside the combat, but at this point I'm kind of excited by the prospect this janky browser RPG get a treatment befitting its popularity. I just hope I don't have to roll the dice again to see if I can play my favorite characters.
