Review: Embers of Mirrim

Embers of Mirrim is all about a griffin-like creature that can split into two halves, light and dark. It's a fitting metaphor for the gameplay found within: though it has one central mechanic, it explores that idea in a lot of different ways to varying degrees of success. There are some clever sections, but for every bright spot there is something tedious or frustrating to deal with.

It's commendable that it tries to keep the experience fresh by doing so many different things, but it could have been cleaner and sharper with a more focused design.

Stardew Valley will have more NPC events and a re-spec option next year

Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone has been teasing a new content update for a while now, but I haven't really been able to gauge how much (or how little) to expect. Which is fine! I'm just happy the support is ongoing, including an upcoming PS Vita version. That said, he did talk specifics today.

some things I've added for the new content update:
*new "town event" in winter
*new type of collection that you can start in your first winter
*Signs (can display any item on them)
*More outdoor decorations (some change w/ season)
*More NPC "events"
*A way to re-spec professions

— ConcernedApe (@ConcernedApe) December 20, 2017

So, on top of multiplayer (which is now aiming for a beta release on PC in Q1 2018), we can look forward to more interactions with the townsfolk, more collecting, and a way to salvage our less-than-ideal profession choices now that we've learned what's what in Pelican Town. I'm stoked for this one.

These additions "will come to consoles," but they'll appear on PC and Mac first.

Inti Creates delays Switch action-RPG Dragon: Marked for Death

Leave it to a delay to put a game I was looking forward to -- but had forgotten about -- back on my radar. That's exactly the case with Dragon: Marked for Death, a four-player cooperative action-RPG from Inti Creates coming to Nintendo Switch. It exists! And it still looks cool! But it's not ready yet.

We wanted to give everyone an update on the release timeframe for Dragon Marked for Death. The team is working day and night to make this game the absolute best it it can be, and thus, the game will now release sometime in 2018.

Thank you very much for your patience. pic.twitter.com/2TufBYE8uN

It's been a heck of a year for Inti on Switch so I don't mind that this will be saved for 2018.

As a refresher, Marked for Death has you venturing out as a Dragonkin (this is a slip-up waiting to happen) with up to three others locally or online. "The Princess is a well-balanced DPS character, the Warrior is a Tank class character that protects the party with his high defense, the Shinobi is DPS that places emphasis on movement on tricky attacks, and the Witch can both heal her allies and damage her enemies." A bunch of folks responsible for Mega Man Zero are working on it, so there's that too.

Bungie's latest Destiny 2 event is pure greed, even by low loot box standards

Odds are you're against loot boxes. The argument that they're "cosmetic" isn't enough to outright ruin a lot of games for me, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with the practice.

The idea of locking so many skins and cool-looking content behind paywalls is absurd, and Bungie has taken it a step further with their winter "Dawning" event in Destiny 2.

AT&T, two banks offer bonuses, pay hikes in wake of U.S. tax reformAT&T Inc , Wells Fargo & Co and Boeing Co were among American companies promising more pay for workers or more investment in training on Wednesday after the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in 30 years. The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives gave final approval to the tax bill on Wednesday, which cuts the corporate tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent, and sent it to U.S. President Donald Trump for his signature. The companies' announcements gave at least some support to claims by Trump and fellow Republicans that their tax bill would lead to more investment by U.S. companies with the money they save.

The real Apple iPhone battery scandal is that it took control away from customers (AAPL)Apple says it's for a good technical reason, which is that as iPhone batteries naturally degrade over time, high power drains can cause the phone to restart. On Wednesday, Apple admitted that there's a large element of truth to a modern urban legend: It admitted that the iOS operating system throttles performance on some iPhones and iPads that have older batteries. This "power management" feature first came to iPhones some time in 2016, says Apple.

Toys Alliance has shared out some new photos of their MAS-02 Megatron figure on Facebook. The licensed, highly detailed, non-transforming Megatron figure is the followup to MAS-01 Optimus Prime (imagine that) and is shown in a few poses, but these photos seem more about showing off the finished look of the figure. The post also advises that due to manufacturing delays, the release window for the figure is now projected around the start of March 2018. You can check out the new photos below!

We have a mini-roundup going for information coming about about the upcoming Studio Series movie-based line. What we're currently interpreting as a sort of Generations-equivalent for the movie series seems to be shaping up to be fairly sizeable thanks to a dump from a store inventory system by one Mr. Chaos who has provided UPCs and other data for us to examine, showing many Deluxes and Voyagers, plus the Leader Grimlock and Blackout toys. Autobase Aichi has also dug up a couple of photos of some of the toys seemingly from an event in China, though the author doesn't know specifics.
