The Pilgrims and Turkey's Were A Little Miffed...

0
0
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and our pilgrims and turkey's have been anxiously awaiting their turn to strut their stuff. Truth be told they were a little miffed that the Santa's and Christmas dolls got a chance to walk the runway of The Dollie Fashion Shows on the It's Starting To Ho! Ho! Ho! post on Dolls Blog before them.

However, given that Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and give thanks for all we have - especially if we have good health they decided to just overlook this and forgive Linda. She's rather busy this time of the year and may not have noticed this...... (Ya, right - they told themselves - or at least some of them told themselves.)

Thanksgiving is also a time of the year when families gather, there are huge feasts to be eaten, football games to watch, and shopping to be done. It's basically, a time of enjoyment. And, the "dollies" just love having fun, eating a good meal, watching a great football game, and of course - going shopping on Black Friday!

However, they truly believe that we should never loose sight of what Thanksgiving started out as - which is a time to "Give Thanks" for ones blessings. Enough said - "Let's eat!"

The "dollies" hope you enjoyed their Thanksgiving fashion show.

Needle Felted Poinsettia Shadow Box Picture

I had wanted to create a poinsettia for the upcoming Christmas holiday season but wasn't able to find a mold for it so I decided to use a combination of the rose design petals upside down from the Rose Needle Felting Applique Mold By The Each, the daisy design leaves from the Daisy Needle Felting Applique Mold By The Each, and the Floret & Berries Needle Felting Applique Mold By The Each that I had bought (and which are shown below) to create a red Poinsettia.

 Floret and Berries
Daisy
Rose

I wanted my poinsettia to be multi-layered with bright red petals, olive green leaves, and bright yellow berries envisioned within a shadowbox frame sponge painted with festive Christmas colors.

As I wanted my poinsettia to be multi-layered with various size petals I decided to use the large  rose design petals upside down for the bottom layer, use the medium rose design petals turned upside down for the 2nd and 3rd layers, and use the small rose petals for the inner section that would be holding the the yellow berries.

First, I needle felted 6 large rose petals and turned them all upside down and felted them all together using the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat.  For the second layer, I needle felted 6 medium rose petals and turned them all upside down and felted them all together using the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat.  Then I put them on top of the 1st layer of needle felted petals I had created and needle felted the two layers together using  the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat.

For the 3rd layer I needle felted 5 medium rose petals and turned them all upside down and felted them all together using the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat.  Then I put the third layer on top of the 1st and 2nd layer of needle felted petals I had created and needle felted the three layers together using  the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat. I used the single needle felting needle and needle felting mat to make sure the three layers were securely felted together.

For the 4th layer I needle felted 3 small rose petals and felted them all together using the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat.  Then I put the fourth layer on top of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd layer of needle felted petals I had created and needle felted the four layers together using  the pen style needle punching tool and needle felting mat. I used the single needle felting needle and needle felting mat to make sure the four layers were securely felted together.

For the yellow berries in the center of the poinsettia I used the berries section of the Floret & Berries Needle Felting Applique Mold By The Each that I had bought and needle felted three yellow berries with gold roving.  I added the gold berries one at a time to the middle of the needle felted poinsettia and felted them all together using the single needle felting needle and needle felting mat until everything was securely in place.

Then I needle felted 6 olive green leaves for my poinsettia using the leaves from the Daisy Needle Felting Applique Mold By The Each.  I wanted my leaves to appear to be curving up towards the center of the poinsettia so when it came to needle felting them to the poinsettia petals I only needle felted the very ends of the leaves to the center of the poinsettia using the single needle felting needle and needle felting mat.

As I wanted my poinsettia to be enclosed within a 6" by 6" by 2" Christmas holiday festive colored shadowbox with 5 1/4" by 5 1/4" opening I painted the unfinished wood shadowbox (except the back inside wall) first with white acrylic paint and then sponge painted it with a combination of Christmas Green, Christmas red, and white acrylic paint.  Then I applied one coat of varnish.

I  cut a piece of dark green felt backing 5 1/4" by 5 1/4" and a piece of 1" of Nu-foam backing 5 1/4" by 5 1/4" and using the needle felting punch tool felted them together.  Then, using the single needle felting needle,  I needle felted my poinsettia to the dark green felt and Nu-foam. Once it was felted to the dark green felt and Nu-foam I used the single needle felting needle to securely felt the inside sections of each layer in place. After I was sure the poinsettia was securely felted to the dark green felt and Nu-foam I hot glued this to the inside back of the shadowbox frame that I had left unpainted.

I liked how my poinsettia turned out and think it will make a wonderful decoration for the upcoming Christmas holiday season.  What do you think?

DCC talks articulation, minor characters, in latest Q&A

DCC talks articulation, minor characters, in latest Q&A screenshot

In their latest "Ask DC Collectibles" segment, DCC responded to questions ranging from increased articulation to the inclusion of minor characters to the use of flesh-colored plastic.

Possibly the biggest question on fans' minds involved DCC's greater-than-average articulation seen in their upcoming Arkham City Batman (pictured) and whether it would become the "new standard". While DCC acknowledged that certain figures would have additional articulation going forward (specifically mentioning that some would come out towards the end of 2013), the company has yet to "settle on a standard".

DCC also mentioned attempts to "diversify" its selection by offering minor characters in its lines, citing examples such as the the Arkham City Joker thug, Mad Hatter, and New 52 Parademon (check out a whole Parademon vs Justice League display in our SDCC coverage). Fans can expect to see additional minor characters over the coming year. Finally, DCC's practice of using flesh-colored plastic (as opposed to painted flesh tones) was called into question. DCC justified the usage by claiming it gave figures a more realistic look since it doesn't involve painting over the plastic (presumably in reference to texture?). DCC added that it "works most efficiently on the characters showing the most skin" and in other cases, such as with Batman where only a tiny portion of skin is shown, they still use painted flesh. While I'm personally not a fan of plastic flesh tones as opposed to painted (since it makes the items look cheaper), I can certainly understand the reasoning.

As an interesting side-note, DCC mentioned that their leftover 3.75-inch Green Lantern 2-pack convention exclusives are sold through their partner, Graffiti Designs. For even more answers, check out the full Q&A transcript.

Shibuya by Night

Located in the heart of Tokyo is a town called Shibuya - bustling with energy and filled with fashion, restaurants and home to the busiest crossing in the world. A must visit if you are in Tokyo. Get there by getting off at Shibuya station on the JR Yamanote line.

Today we take a look at what Shibuya is like during the Halloween season. Over the years, Halloween has been slowly becoming popular in Japan and you can see decorations in shops starting in early October. Then as soon as it hits the 1st of November, all the Halloween decorations are wiped out to be replaced by Christmas tinsel.

I hear that one day soon, the Tokyo Dance Trooper will make a return to the streets of Shibuya...

Check out more places to visit in Shibuya listed up below.

The G.E.M. series reminds us Gintama is about Kintoki

The G.E.M. series reminds us Gintama is about Kintoki screenshot

My memory is a little fuzzy, but it looks like MegaHouse will be releasing yet another figure of the star of Gintama, Kintoki Sakata. The leader of the Yorozuya and all around liked character Kin-chan will be released as a 1/8-scale figure as a part of the G.E.M. series joining other characters such as Hijikata (reviewed), Shinsuke (reviewed), and... and... wasn't there a guy with a perm?

Based on the character in the most recent Gintama anime arc, Gintoki's "perfect" doppelganger will be added as a quickie to the G.E.M. series by MegaHouse. This 1/8-scale figure uses the original Gintoki mold (blog review) since they are pretty much the same person but replaces the colors and hair to give us our golden lie boy. The figure also replaces the silver fork that Gin-san included with a golden one continuing the play on their names (gin translated as "silver" and kin translated as "gold").

The 1/8-scale G.E.M. series Kintoki is retailing for ¥7,980 and will be shipping in March, 2013. Unfortunately, it appears that this figure is an animate Online Shop exclusive since MegaHouse has yet to make any announcements and no other retailer is listing it. So, will you be getting the "star" of Gintama to complete your collection?

Cast your vote and pre-order Satsuki Shinonome

Cast your vote and pre-order Satsuki Shinonome screenshot

I really enjoyed last season's Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate, even the apparently much-reviled ending's choice of girls for our hero. Fortunately, fans of the rest of the cast will have something to look forward to thanks to Alphamax and their upcoming release of presidential candidate Satsuki Shinonome.

While, as you can imagine, I wasn't a fan of her overly busty figure, I really enjoyed her outgoing, friendly yet confident personality, so I'm glad to see her getting some more love. Though, compared to the previous Megahouse release (which even then was a bit iffy), I find that Alphamax really dropped the ball in terms of capturing the series' art style. I really like her eyes, but her face doesn't really look like Satsuki. I honestly am not sure I'd know it was her, especially without her trademark hair beads.

She'll be available in May, and you can grab her for around ¥6,800. What do you think? Am I seeing things or does this just look like some other random black-haired chick?

Double your fetish with Clayz's School Swimsuit Maid

Double your fetish with Clayz's School Swimsuit Maid screenshot

I'm not usually a huge fan of Clayz or the whole "throw every fetish at a wall and see what sticks" type of figure, but for once, they seem to have gotten one that actually works! It helps that source material from the wonderful Tony Taka helps, with what seems to be some great work on the figure itself by Takeshi Miyagawa.

I think a major part of the appeal is both the maid uniform and school swimsuit alike are white in color, making for a very seamless, unified look rather than having the typical navy blue swimsuit clash and stand out so noticeably. The ribbons add a nice splash of color to keep things from getting too dull, and of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention her lovely twintails. Those long, Miku (or Sona!)-style tails are right up my alley!

This is definitely one I'd like to keep an eye on when she shows up in March, and if you feel the same you'll be able to pick her up for about ¥9.800.
