Under the Radar: Poppies results announced; see the best collectibles of 2016
With all of the excitement surrounding Toy Fair and Wonder Festival this year (which fell on the same weekend again), naturally some things slipped between the cracks. One major announcement that we missed* was that the 2016 Poppies results were in.
For those of you who have never heard of the Poppies, it's an awards program where 150 toy industry experts come together once a year to vote on the best collectibles in a variety of categories. But wait, there's more! In addition to the judges' list, you also get the "Peoples' Picks" where the public is allowed to vote on those same items and the founder Michael Crawford's (Captain Toy) picks as well.
We've covered the Poppies year after year and, some time ago, a few of us here at Tomopop were given the opportunity to join the list of judges (specifically Brian (our fearless editor-in-chief), Jeremy, and myself).
The neat thing about the Poppies is that the editor's picks and Peoples' Picks are listed right next to the official Poppies result for each category, so you can see where everybody was in agreement and, in a surprising number of cases, at least two of the three groups tended to agree in a number of categories. (With all three agreeing that Marvel Legends was the best overall low-end line of 2016.)
This year's highlights include Mezco's One:12 Collective winning best overall high-end (a bit of an upset since one of the Hot Toys lines usually takes the title), Hasbro's Marvel Legends Juggernaut surprisingly won for best BAF (beating out the likes of Dormammu, Giant Man, and Onslaught), Sideshow's He-Man won best statue, and Hasbro's Captain America's Shield won for best prop replica.
