Good Smile's NYCC booth exclusives revealed screenshot

So, this morning, I posted about the figures Good Smile would have at their NYCC booth for display and sale. And that last sentence ... yes, I was tipping my hand a bit (nice guess, Gekokujou). But now, we've got the OK from Good Smile to reveal the exclusives for NYCC!

The exclusives are, in fact ... past exclusives! It's a chance to get old favorites again, particularly the following:

They'll all be on sale, as well: check the gallery for a price list (as posted on the Good Smile U.S. Tumblr) and we'll let you know what else might turn up at the booth Thursday!

  • 10/10/12--15:33: Sea-Borg Mutations at NYCC
  • Having started sculpting and casting resin toys last year, making the Sea-Borgs has been a learning experience and I've made a lot of mistakes along the way. There have been plenty of bad castings, colors that didn't quite work, failed paint tests and more. All of these "lessons" have added up over the months to [...]

DrilOne and Frank Kozik are added to Cavey show's roster screenshot

We've already shown you four of the twelve artists (check back here and here for a refresher) who will be taking part in Cavey's American Cousins plush show, the first exhibit for Holly Stanway's roly-poly plush to be hosted on U.S. shores. This time around, I'll be revealing two more artists who have customized Cavey toys for the November 10 show, Frank Kozik and DrilOne

Frank's plush looks shockingly similar to his hedgehog Heathrow (here's a post on its holiday version). I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a plush of that spiny fellow. DrilOne's round dude is bit more mysterious. I see some blood, determined eyes, faux leather, and the numbers 0 and 6. I'll be excited to see the entire piece and get a better, more cohesive idea of the custom.

Cavey's American Cousins pop-up art show will take place for one night (Saturday, November 10) in Los Angeles at the Cat and Fiddle Pub.  Each custom piece on display at the event will up for auction beginning on November 3 and ending on November 10. More information about the event and auction can be found at Holly's Cavey blog.

  • 10/10/12--16:22: It's time for Plush You!
  • I would loooooove to be in Seattle for the opening of the Plush You! art show at Schmancy Toys this Friday night at 5pm, but no such luck for me this year. My plush will just have to enjoy the opening for me, I guess. ;D

I did a bunch of sketching before I decided what I wanted to make this year, and I finally came up with the idea to do my take on Hansel and Gretel, and their nemesis, the Witch.

Hansel and Gretel find themselves lost in the woods for days, and then suddenly come across a cottage deep in the woods that is completely made of candy!

Unbeknownst to them, the delicious looking cottage belongs to Wilhelmina Witch, who has an unusual favorite food...

    Wilhelmina Witch

In my version, Wilhelmina is a lot like the sharks in Finding Nemo: she is a recovering child-eating addict, who is trying to mend her ways. Will she be able to resist Hansel and Gretel? I wonder...

These were a lot of fun to make, and I really had a good time finding a bunch of cotton prints that coordinated but weren't matchy-matchy. Playing around with combinations of prints is one of the most enjoyable aspects of plush-making, I think.

I also wanted Hansel and Gretel to relate to each other but not use the same fabrics, so I chose yellow as the common element, and worked with that to choose the differing fabrics for each sibling. Both Hansel and Gretel have freckles, and are wearing the same shoes. I wanted to get the candy feel into them without it being too obvious, so I used rick-rack to add a "gingerbread" element, and the flowers on Gretel's apron kinda look like lollipops to me.

For Wilhelmina, I definitely wanted her to shout candy and treats, so I found a cotton print with all sorts of ice cream desserts on it for her skirt, and then I used the colors from that pattern to help choose the rest of the fabrics, keeping the candy theme in mind. She has a witchy light green fleece for her face and hands, and a definite candy pink for her hair. I made her witch's hat out of brown felt, with a lighter brown stitching over top to create the "waffle cone" effect. To add to the candy/treat elements of her look, I made her a large lollipop to hold, as well as mini donuts for the buckles on her shoes, and a pink shortbread cookie, chocolate chip cookie, and ice cream pop resting on her hat brim. To add some sparkle, she has a sparkly button brooch on, her dress has sparkly green rick rack trim, and the icing on the donuts is made from white sparkle felt.

If you are in the Seattle area this Friday, head on over and check out the show at Schmancy Toys. There are always amazing plush made for this show, and you won't be disappointed! If you can't make the show, but still want to see photos etc, look for #PlushYou! on twitter, and you can also see photos on Schmancy's pinterest, and facebook pages.

Thanks to Xterry over at TFW who has shared some images of the Transformers Fall of Cybertron Starscream action figure prototype. We first saw this guy at SDCC 2012. The Generations figure that is shown in robot, a Gerwalk-type mode, and his alternate Cybertronian jet mode is looking pretty true to his game form. Look for this figure to be out in March of 2013. Check out the images of the toy now for more details.

blogLIFE: The Perks Of Being A Semi-Popular Geek Lifestyle Blogger

Sometimes brands want to reach a certain audience. Depending on how specific the audience is, big brands occasionally turn to smaller blogs for help. For the past year I’ve been working as a brand ambassador for Virgin Mobile doing simple things like sharing tweets on twitter, Facebook posts, and the occasional write-up on

Virgin invited myself and 24 other bloggers (dubbed the Virgin Mobile 25) to Maryland for their annual FreeFest music festival, a free day-long music fest that asks attendees to donate at least $10 to The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s initiative to address youth homelessness.

It’s a fantastic cause, and the lineup was awesome. I had the pleasure of being part of last year’s VM25 and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this year kicked last year’s ass to the moon and back. Incredible experience. Incredible people. Thank you Virgin Mobile and Mekanism for bringing me on board.

[blogLIFE is a series of short vlogumentaries told from the perspective of founder Robby “brownkidd” Weiss as he documents his quest to find the American dream accross the wild frontier known as the blogosphere. Take a peek behind the curtain and witness the inner workings, occasional perks, and constant struggles associated with running a semi-popular geek lifestyle blog.]
