The 2016 Integrity Toys Convention: Supermodels part IX: The W Club Luncheon

$

After a Friday night without an official event (only the Bazaar was on), Saturday morning arrived and the last convention day. This means, first of all,  the W Club Members-Only Luncheon. This year it featured Nu Face and the centerpiece was Erin sitting on a miniature motorcycle (which you can find on ebay for more or less the same price one could get it in the convention, it's a Honda Valkyrie model miniature). During the event, W Club owner and stage-host Carol Roth hosted a Q & A panel featuring the IT design team. The designers answered questions that club members sent in online last week. The gift doll was a new-sculpt Colette doll. Jesse Ayala is taking over the Nu Face line design.
In other news, the AHS: Coven first doll is appearing near the end of the month and the first doll will be Angela Basset's Marie Laveau. They confirmed what many suspected, the demise of the Dynamite Girls line. The Industry line is its replacement, will use some of those sculpts but at almost double the price. Makes financial sense, no?

This Erin is of course inspired by the famous photoshoot by Peter Lindbergh for thr September 1991 issue of American Vogue seen below:

Erin looks great and her outfit as well, apart from the oversize cap.

So is she Helena or Cindy? Maybe Stephanie? Or Karen?

The bike she was shown on is below. 50 of the attendees were raffled to buy these. You can find it on ebay.

She had nice accessories too

So this is the new sculpt for Colette. This has been a long time coming. Last appearance of the old one as Colette was back in the Rock Wedding Trio if I remember correctly.

The outfit is from Azedinne Alaia's Tati collection from 1991 as seen below on Christy:

She has a ring too and the mules look just like Christy's above left. Pity she does not have a bag.

The August 2016 Loot Crate took on an interesting theme – the Anti-Hero. No. Not the Ant Hero – the Antihero. The antihero is a protagonist who often lacks the morals of your everyday heroic character. They’re usually dark, sometimes dishonest, but often have some sort of redeeming quality (oftentimes not apparent until the end […] Read more

The exclusive convention souvenir doll is truly one of the most beautiful 16" dolls I've ever seen.  Her face, her wig, everything about her is sublime.

The gown is silk. The 'shrug' is flexible resin. I added the earrings.

An intricately designed wig by Ilaria is the crown on this beauty's head.

An optional purchase of Guinevere's gown & shoes in an alternate color is modeled here by Liberty. This fashion came with a lovely bracelet. I added the earrings. The wig is Liberty's original.

Excalibur is the name of this sequined jumpsuit which was the convention fashion gift. I have Star modeling it. She's wearing Viola's wig.

Note the lip shaped purse Star is holding. We received it in purple, red and gold. The red came with matching shoes.

One of my grab bag gifts was Orbit's jacket, modeled here by Savile who is also wearing shorts by Hazelstreet Designs.

On one room shopping foray, I picked up this trio of pieces by the talented YumYum Designs (Miriam.) Modeling is Chaucer wearing a Chewin wig.
The jacket is fully functional in that the zipper works and the buckles buckle. Nothing is there for show!

Look at the attention to detail on the back of this jacket. Amazing.

Science Proves Why Steiff's Petsy Bear Is Truly Irresistible!

$

Steiffgal's got a very special houseguest this month - an original late 1920's Steiff Petsy bear. He's visiting the Northeast for a few more weeks, then its off to his new forever home in Europe. Early and original Petsy bears hold a unique place in Steiff collector's hearts. Their adorable looks, charming personalities, and distinctly child-like features really are in a class by themselves in terms of Steiff bear designs. All of this got Steiffgal wondering... is there a scientific reason why this might be the case?

All kidding aside, let's first take a closer look at this blue-eyed baby. Petsy is 43 cm tall, fully jointed, and made from brown tipped mohair, which has faded and thinned significantly in this case. His paw pads are made from tan felt. His pert face comes to life with a prominent center facial seam, oversized blue and black pupil eyes, a pink hand embroidered nose and mouth, and proportionally large, wire rimmed ears. His big blue bow, although a delightful accessory, is not original to him. Tipped Petsy had a short, but sweet, appearance in the Steiff catalog, only appearing from 1928 through the very early 1930's. He was made in ten sizes ranging from 15 to 50 cm sitting (or 22 to 75 cm standing.) Tipped Petsy was also produced as a musical Ted in 17 and 20 cm (or 25 and 30 cm standing), on a four wheeled rolling cart in 20 and 25 cm, as a 17 cm puppet, and as a 17 cm purse.

So just what makes Petsy's design so baby-like and absolutely precious? In this case, it's a bit of brilliant business strategy meets science. From the business end of things, Petsy is the vision of Richard Steiff, whose product design priorities and directives in the mid- to late- 1920's included creating colorful patterns with softer, kinder, youthful expressions that reflected the "look and feel" of the roaring, playful 1920's.

However, few could argue that Petsy is not just appealing, but uber-cute. And that's where the science end of things may help to explain things. According to The Daily Mail's "How It Works" researchers, there is a phenomenon called "baby schema" which makes adults find certain configurations of body proportions on animals, children, and even some inanimate objects absolutely irresistible. From an evolutionary perspective, this may reflect the universal need to care for and protect our youngsters. Seeing cute things also releases dopamine, a neurochemical responsible in part for making us all feel good. Doesn't the cute photo on the left of the puppy and kitten make you smile?

According to scientists, these "cute" features include:

  • A wide, prominent forehead
  • A proportionally large, round, symmetrical head
  • Big eyes placed low on the face
  • Soft textures
  • Rounded body and features
Petsy gets an A+ in meeting these requirements. His forehead is quite distinctive, and further emphasized by his center seam. His head is round and absolutely symetrical. His eyes are large, wide, and placed relatively low on his face. His brown tipped mohair is very soft and fluffy, and invites touching. And his chubby proportions and almost completely round ears complete the package.

But the science of "cute" also has practical implications for Steiff collectors. According to another published study from research conducted in Japan, people did better on tasks requiring focused attention better after viewing cute images - those that met the scientific criteria listed above. The findings of the work suggest that cute things may be used as "an emotion elicitor to induce careful behavioral tendencies in specific situations, such as driving and office work."  So, given this is true, Steiffgal suggests always having a dear Steiff friend close at hand to insure you do your very best... and that every day should be Take Your Teddy To Work Day!

Steiffgal hopes this article helped to add a little dopamine to your day!

The 2016 Integrity Toys Convention: Supermodels part X: The final gala night

The final night of the Integrity Toys convention is always the most impressive, important but also emotional, as everyone has to say goodbye. The evening started with the introduction of the final centerpiece of the convention, followed by dinner, the announcement of this year's competition winners, the raffle of the designer OOAK dolls (which were amazing, pity I do not have official photos) and an interview with Jason Wu.
Jason announced plans for celebrating his company's 10th anniversary in 2017 and the introduction of new features in the Fashion Royalty line, starting with a "Velvet Touch" skin finish (sounds similar to Lovetones skin). He announced that as a thank you for everyone who opted to attend convention this year, a special offer would be included with the convention doll: to pre-order the very first Elyse doll that features the "Velvet Touch" skin finish. It seems like the Jason Wu anniversary dolls will be a separate line, sold through international stores, more expensive and with more detailed handmade outfits. More about the actual doll below.
I forgot to mention in a previous post that Victoire is also making a comeback, with a slightly tweaked body (it will be "explosive" like the FR for easier dressing). Cannot wait to see her back.
The moment everyone was waiting for was of course the reveal of this year's convention doll which came with two complete outfits to match the other girls in the convention collection.
Next year's convention will be in Orlando, Florida the weekend of October 19th-21st, 2017 with the theme of Fashion Fairytale. The amazing fairytale inspired editorials of Grace Coddington for the Christmas issues of Vogue came to mind immediately.
The winner of 2016's Supermodel Convention Design Competition Advanced Category was the talented Salvador Lopez Arriaga, so congratulations for him! He got both jury and public awards. His design will come to life later in 2017 as a real Integrity Toys doll. Here's a picture of his lovely creation:

At the intermediary category, public prize went to the amazing Ginny Liezert, while last year's winner, the awesome Jason Kramer got the jury prize. Congratulations both, much deserved!

This is a suit from the Dior by John Galliano Haute Couture collection from Autumn/Winter 1997/1998, an iconic collection and show. It was worn on the runway, in the parc des Bagatelles, by Debra Shaw, a model and friend of Galliano's.

A simliar look was also shown but with higher shoulders.

..and the only editorial photo of it I could find was this:

Princesse Bundi and Princesse Partabgarh from the Haute Couture F/W 1997 Collection.

Dania looks gorgeous here, and the recreation of the suit is perfection. Love the amazing Masai necklace. The inspiration of that collection was Marchesa Casati and Masai tribal dress.

Pity the shoes are not the fringed ones shown with the actual outfit, they'd be smashing. I do think though that Jordan or Nadja would rock this one much better, just like Debra Shaw did on the catwalk.

Lacroix sweetie, Lacroix! Finally a gown from the master of couture, and a sumptuous one at that. This is from the Christian Lacroix Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1995 collection and this is how it looked on the runway:

Courtesy Harper's Bazaar/Getty Images

Shalom Harlow is the supermodel that wore it best in an editorial for US Vogue that year:

Dasha, still with her trademark sideglance, looks fab here. She does remind me a bit of Karen Mulder and also of her previous incarnation as Renegade, again blonde and in a red dress.

I love the recreation and the detachable train. The jewellery is amazing too. And she has the extra Versace dress too!

Elyse was not at convention but she made quite an impression. The face looks a lot like Montaine Market Elise, the dress is lovely, with nice detailing. But the stud earrings and the absence of other accessories do not justify the high price (near $200 from what I hear) of the doll. She is too austere, almost looks like a nanny in a fancy dress.

The Dolls Product Lines Series - Sissie Snow Gal

Sissie Snow Gal

"Sissie Snow Gal" is a very adventurous snow gal. In fact, she is very much a snow tomboy. She's as brave and as daring as some of her snow buddies. Sometimes, even she puts them to shame as she's willing to try something they are too afraid of. They should be called "sissies" not her.

She is a free-standing snow lady with a warm & natural cloth body, sock covered wood feet, fabric covered dowel legs, and embroidered face with black eyes. She is wearing cuffed corduroy shorts and a wool shawl. She has a fringed wool scarf red bangs, and cap. She is holding a “I Love Snow” painted and stenciled wood sign.

The W Club Member's Luncheon featured a Nu Face Doll as the centerpiece and the gift. There weren't 400 motorcycles and they were a separate purchase. Someone posted that they were $20. I don't know if that is verifiable.

I believed, at first, that they had changed the sculpt. I examined her face closely and now I am convinced it's the same Elise sculpt but painted very differently.  I don't care for this interpretation as it washes out her beautiful features. Her lips look tiny and her eyes are squinty.

But the toned-down make-up and styling of the doll is in line with the human model from Jason's pre-fall 2016 collection. She looks taken aback and ragged.

It was announced that next year's convention will be held in Orlando.
