Gotta Love Punch Needle and My Punch Needle Tutorials, Video's, Patterns and How-To's Pinterest Board

I just love trying all sorts of different crafts and was introduced to punch needle several years ago while shopping at a colonial store in Sturbridge with my mom. We were in one of our favorite stores in Sturbridge which sold all sorts of colonial fabrics, patterns, and craft kits.

When we went up to the register to pay for our patterns there was a woman who was seated behind the counter working at something with a tool we hadn't seen before. So, of course, we asked her what it was.

Well, it turns out it was a punch needle pen that she was using to make a tiny punch needle picture. She asked us if we wanted to learn how to use the pen and we, of course, nodded our heads,  We loved it and, of course, I ended up buying some punch needle patterns, a punch needle pen, and embroidery floss.

I finished my first few punchneedle kit rather quickly and decided to buy more kits for some of the handmade Christmas presents I was giving to my Mother, Sister, and Sister-In-Law that year.

As I was working on my punchneedle kits I kept thinking about how I wanted to finish my pictures.

You see, punchneedle is basically the weaving of DMC embroidery floss onto a preprinted evenweave type fabric to create a specific picture. So, I wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to finish my pictures.

Did I want to use picture frames and a mat, cloth, or wood? Did I want them hung on a wall like a picture or create a stand alone box?

I decided to create wood frames for my punchneedle pictures that were capable of standing alone on a bookshelf. So, I enlisted the help of my younger brother and his amazing workshop to build my wood borders and to finish my punchneedle pictures.

The first frame took us a little longer than all the rest to work out all the kinks, but we got it down and completing the rest was relatively easy as we decided to wrap the punch needle to size around a 1/4" wood square and then create a border around that. We also decided to use a box inset to create a framed affect. The borders were painted and then I added heavy fabric wallpaper to finish the backs.
If you'd like to see pictures of some of the results please read my Linda's Blog post entitled, "My Punchneedle Gifts."

I ended up giving quite a fw punch needle gifts over the years. If you like to see some of them please click on the Linda's Blog posts below:

This Ikkitousen figure... Isn't all that bad!! And it's a Kanu?

Many moons ago, Ikkitousen was pretty much the butt of many jokes among the figure community. The license was easy to get a hold of and the figure market was still relatively young so many Ikkitousen figures were basically the figure equivalent of shovelware with many releases each month and almost all of them being bad... really bad!

Kanu Unchou got the bulk of our scorn as, being the most popular girl from the manga, she got a metric craptonne of releases even compared to the other characters. But then the series pretty much disappeared from our sight and we all forgot about the mountains of probably unsold ikkitousen figures sitting in a specially dug out hole to be buried. But now, there has been a little resurgence of Ikkitousen figures and... They have not been all that good. Don't get me wrong, they are leagues ahead of the stuff we saw in the dark days but they haven't really stood out from the crowd. Then New Vision toys came out with this Kanu, and it actually looks pretty damn good!

As per usual, she's posing with her Green Dragon Crescent Blade, the Trademark weapon for Kanu in pretty much any and all media concerning the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (as well as being rather consistent in design in fictional works, despite not looking anything like the apparent replica in China). But its clear that a lot of work has gone on the base as well as Kanu herself. She looks like how she does in the manga/anime (which already puts the figure above a lot of previous releases) and she looks like she means business!

The figure is actually open for pre-order on your preferred online store for ¥13,824, which isn't too bad a price for a figure in the current market but I'm just stunned that there's an Ikkitousen figure which made me do a double take and actually made me look at it in appreciation instead of ridicule or scorn!

Barbie Fashion Icons hits the Milan catwalk again

It's autumn so fashion weeks are running one after another, from New York to London to Milan and Paris. Vogue Italia, in collaboration with Mattel and fashion designers, once again organised a Barbie Fashion Icons exhibition along Milan Fashion Week at Palazzo Morando from the 21st of September.

The fashion designers this time are:

  • Massimo Giorgetti for Emilio Pucci
  • Alessandra Facchinetti for Tod’s
  • Alessandro Dell’Acqua for Rochas
  • Salvatore Ferragamo Creative Team
  • Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant for Courrèges
  • Lorenzo Serafini for Philosophy
  • Arthur Arbesser for Iceberg
  • Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi for Fay
  • Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli
  • Veronica Etro for Etro

The designers picked their preffered version of the doll, curvy, petite, tall etc. and created a unique fashion for her, showcasing their brand's vision for Barbie. Matching accessories were also designed and made. The results are sublime and once again prove how creative the doll world can become.

The September issue of Vogue Italia also had an interview with Richard Dickson, President and CEO of Mattel. A small sample of the article is here.

Lorenzo Serafini for Philosophy

The magazine issue also features the photo shoot on a special thick paper four page insert while their Vogue Talents supplement also features a full page feature with the second photo.
