Linda's How-Do-I Series? How To Make A Fall Wall Hanging Basket Floral Arrangement

As you know I am a big fan of silk floral arrangements and have been decorating my house with them for several decades. Some are just as old as that and have never needed to be replaced or redone. They're as good as new as the first time they were made. That's the beauty of silk florals. Plus, silk florals are just so much fun to work with and so versatile.

Several years ago I decided I wanted to create a Fall wall hanging flat basket silk floral arrangement for my entrance hall.

I wanted something that was not too big and didn't extend too far from the wall so I decided to go with a rustic basket I had purchased years before.

When the basket was done I brought it upstairs.. Luckily for me it fit the entrance hall wall perfectly and didn't extend too far out.

I was so pleased with the way my basket came out so I thought you might enjoy a step-by-step tutorial of how I made my Fall wall hanging flat basket silk floral arrangement. Here's how I made it:

Supplies Needed For The Fall Flat Hanging Basket:

1” Wired Ribbon (For Bow)  - 6 Feet
12” Flat Hanging Wall Basket With Handle
18” Grass Silk Floral Spray - 4 Bunches
18” Silk Floral Cattails Onion Grass Stems - 3 Stems
18” Silk Floral Yellow Rose - 1 Stem
8” Moss Green Leaf Bunch - 4 Stems
18” Silk Floral Tiny Flower Sprays  (Yellow and White ) - 6 Sprays Each
18” Fall Silk Floral Mums (Rust) - 8 Stems
Floral Picks With Wire
Pipe Cleaners
Green Florist Foam - 2 Bricks
Wire Cutters
Green Foam Cutters or Knife
Green Excelsior Basil - 1 Bag

Instructions:

1)  Line the insides of the flat hanging wall basket with green excelsior basil.

2)   Shape the green floral foam bricks to fit tightly inside of the flat hanging wall basket and insert them into the basket so that they are even with the top edge rim of the basket about 2” away from the basket edge rim. Make sure the green excelsior basil surrounds the bricks and the foam is tight within the basket.

3)  Cover the green floral foam brick with more green excelsior basil inserting it along the sides and top of the flat hanging wall basket. Make sure you can’t see any of the green floral foam through the outsides of the basket.

4)  Cut the 8” moss green leaf bunch into separate leaves to surround the inside rim edge and then insert them around the rim of the front and sides of the basket.

5) Measure the grass silk floral sprays so they can be inserted into the green foam in a fan pattern and extend past the sides and top of the basket handles. When satisfied with your lengths cut each spray and insert each spray into the green foam in a fan pattern as shown in the illustration above.

6) Measure the yellow rose to be inserted into the center back of the flat hanging basket so the top of the rose reaches the top center of the handle.  When satisfied with your length cut the rose stem and insert it into the green foam as shown in  the illustration above.

7) Measure the dried brown Cattails stems so they can be inserted into the green foam in a fan pattern along the back of the basket and extend over and beyond the top of the handle. When satisfied with your lengths cut each stem and insert each stem into the green foam in a fan pattern as shown in the illustration above.

8) Measure the six tiny yellow flower stems so they can be inserted into the green foam in a pleasing patterns so the colors are well blended.   When satisfied with your lengths cut each stem and insert each stem into the green foam as shown in the illustration above.

9)  Measure the six tiny white flower stems so they can be inserted into the green foam in a pleasing patterns so the colors are well blended.   When satisfied with your lengths cut each stem and insert each stem into the green foam as shown in the illustration above.

10)  Measure the eight rust colored mums flower stems so they can be inserted into the green foam in a pleasing patterns so the colors are well blended.   When satisfied with your lengths cut each stem and insert each stem into the green foam as shown in the illustration and picture above.

11) Form a multiple loop bow out of the 1” wired ribbon until your bow has 16 or more loops and tightly secure it with the pipe cleaner.  Wrap a floral pick tightly around the center of the bow and then insert it into the bottom of the top center of the flat hanging wall basket.  Secure with the glue if need be.  For help creating your wired ribbon bow please use my How To Make A  Two Ribbon Combination Bow Free E-Book As A Guide - https://lindawalshoriginals.blogspot.com/2012/10/lindas-how-do-i-series-how-to-make-two.html

12) Congratulations your easy fall hanging flat wall basket floral arrangement is done.  Hang it on the wall from the handle.

Are You A Fan of Dandy Dan?

Ok, Steiffgal is certain this big reveal will result in wide scale panda-monium! Check out this note from a new friend from Ohio who wanted to introduce the Steiff world to a beloved "mohair" member of her family. Over a series of communications, Kristy shares...

"I know there is a special love for Panda Bears so I would like to introduce to you Dandy Dan! We purchased Dandy Dan around 1983 from an antique dealer in Michigan.

It is our understanding through research and documentation that Dandy Dan was a special order for the department store Stix, Baer and Fuller in St. Louis Missouri in the late 1930's. This is around the time the St. Louis Zoo had a few panda bears as well. So the excitement of Pandas was a big thing then as well.

Dandy Dan was signed by Hans Otto Steiff in the later 1980's. He measures 63 inches tall and weighs about 45 lbs."

Bear with Steiffgal a moment as she catches her breath over this remarkable treasure! Yes, indeed, this is an early Steiff display panda.  His pattern and proportions for the most part match the company's original panda designs, which were based on the beloved "Teddy Baby" pattern. These details include an open, smiling mouth; flat feet designed for standing; downturned paws; and a distinctly youthful appearance.  Although it is impossible to tell with 100% certainty without examining him firsthand, it is Steiffgal's best guess that he is head and arm jointed for flexibility in displaying him, but not jointed in the legs for stability.  He is mounted on a support structure that Kristy's family made for him.

Steiff has been designing and producing lifesized special order editions since the turn of last century, so it is not surprising, but totally thrilling, that Dan would make an appearance after all these years.  Exactly dating him is tricky.  Written provenance suggests that he was produced and delivered to Stix, Baer and Fuller (a department store chain in St. Louis, Missouri that operated from 1892 to 1984) in the 1930's.  Two pandas arrived at the St. Louis zoo in 1939, and this news worthy of international headlines at the time. According to the zoo's website...

“When Happy and Pao Pei pandas arrived at the Zoo in 1939, more than 35,000 people greeted them. They were a rare sight indeed. At the time, only three other pandas were on exhibit in the United States. Director George Vierheller called the pandas the greatest attractions the Zoo had had up to that time.”  (Happy and Pao Pei are pictured here on the left.)

It is completely understandable that a major department store in the area would want to share in the excitement (and marketing potential) of the pandas in their city.  And, apparently the department stores in downtown St. Louis had a tradition of outstanding holiday window displays in the mid-20th century.  As such, it is entirely possible that the panda was produced in the late 1930's or early 1940's and delivered to St. Louis at the time for a holiday or general window display.

It is very interesting to note that 1939 marked the start of WWII.  At that time, Steiff's production was significantly limited, and high end fabrics such as mohair and felt were severely rationed for toy manufacturing purposes.  So it is a bit unusual that the company would make a large, labor intensive specialty that required a great deal of rationed fabrics at the time - and then have the infrastructure to export it to the United States across battle lines.  Given all that, it is also possible that this panda was made and delivered to St. Louis in the mid to late 1940's, once the war was over and Steiff's toy making business was slowly returning to normal.  However, only Dandy Dan knows for sure!

Steiffgal hopes this interesting panda discussion has also made YOU a fan of Dandy Dan!
