Nikto Skiff Guard

Well, Hasbro’s new Nikto Skiff Guard (VC99) is a long overdue update to the original figure made by Kenner for the vintage Return of the Jedi toy line. This is important for some people, because ever since Hasbro re-launched the license back in 1995, fans have had the lingering desire to see the complete roster of characters produced by Kenner in the current line.

The threat of large inflatable Daleks might be overblown

The threat of large inflatable Daleks might be overblown screenshot

The Daleks, perhaps Doctor Who's deadliest foes, are looking less than threatening as 30-inch and 47-inch inflatable collectibles. In fact, I doubt that Underground Toys' Inflatable Daleks will be taking over much of anything even if they do manage to invade (and occupy) your homes although your wallet might be a casualty.

The Inflatable Daleks seem to come in two sizes although the larger is only available in red. At 47-inches, he's still not quite to scale with an actual Dalek but he comes reasonably close. The smaller 30-inch Daleks are available in red, blue, yellow, or white. The overall level of quality between both sizes looks similar although the larger one (pictured) has a visibly nicer base.

While I love the look of these, I just honestly don't think I have the space. However, if you have the room for a long-term occupation then you might consider pre-ordering either the large Red for US$95 or one of the smaller ones for US$60. They're scheduled for an October release.

Under the Radar: MonstreHero's Pizza Boss screenshot

MonstreHero's latest resin creation is a collaboration with Steven Erst and a slice of monstrosity: the Pizza Boss. The 7-inch-tall Pizza Boss figures use the Victim #4 body from MonsterHero with a head sculpt from Steven to create a guy you really don't want to cross paths with.

Sadly, a lot of the colorways are already sold out, but the Green and Brown Pizza Bosses are still available in the MonstreShop for US$85 each.

So now that voting for the Designer Toy Awards this year is closed ... what's left but to party? That's what'll be happening on Oct. 13 in New York City (smack dab on the third day of NYCC) with the Designer Toy Awards 2012! This year, the whole thing is going down in a ridiculously nice looking place: Providence NYC (311 W. 57th St., near Columbus Circle and Central Park) starting at 8 p.m. Eastern. Tomopop will be in attendance, so we'll be bringing you the sights and award winners!

Also worth noting, and mentioned before, is that The Sucklord is hosting. But on top of that, there will be a special Sucklord figure made just for the occasion and on sale at the DTAs only. More info on the Sucklord Host 2012 figure will come soon, and we'll bring it to you!

IFDC's Kesenia and Rayna Dolls

Once again, of the many benefits of being an international shipping buddy is getting to play with dolls that I do not own. Long Cool Woman Kesenia and Rock Me, Baby Rayna are temporary visitors to PA.
I rarely photograph dolls on stands however in this case, I could not remove the plastic from their legs so I decided to just go with it. The shoes on each doll are very nice with their tiny zippers that make it so easy to get them on and off.
Underneath her jacket, Rayna wears a shirt that has string criss-crossed with the ends tied in a big bow. Not my taste so I put up the lapels of her jacket and tucked the strings inside.

Each doll comes with very nice jewelry including a ring.
Nice ring but you may be able to see the difference in color between Kesenia's arms and hands. The hands are yellowish and the rest of her body is not. Not good. I guess if you wait long enough the body may yellow to match the hands.

Kesenia's sculpt is one of my least favorite as she was originally one of the Brides of Dracula.
Remember these?

However, in the LCW version, her mouth is painted with a darker pink lip color-shadow and her teeth aren't as large as other versions.
Long Cool Woman is the best Kesenia to-date IMO. I love her eyes which are two shades of blue-green. Her eyeshadow is a shade that goes really well with her lips. On her tan face, the pink is really pretty.

I'm wondering if IT will ever stop using the color-block look for the eye makeup, eyebrows and lips. It would be nice to see a more painterly approach to facial screening on a few dolls.

Pre-order the little Mermaid Thetis

Pre-order the little Mermaid Thetis screenshot

One of the major franchises almost wholly ignored on this site is Saint Seiya (aka Knights of the Zodiac or Saint Cloth Myth) despite the occasional really cool figure. Most recently that cool figure was Mermaid Thetis, possessor of the Mermaid Cloth (that's a thing, right?) and one of the few female combatants.

The shiny armor (a hallmark for these figures apparently) looks awesome in what the Tamashii site dubs, "the Mermaid Princess object display" (which I believe holds some of the interchangeable armor bits and apparently includes a display rock for the "object" to rest on). Thetis features a removable helmet, removable armor (which, again, I think becomes part of that other display piece), hair articulation, and two face-plates (the default and a sideways glance). The faces seem to strongly resemble what I assume is the art style used in the anime (of which I caught maybe a handful of episodes many years ago).

Mermaid Thetis is a cool enough figure with a character design that might tempt non-fans. She's still available for pre-order in a few places.

High Fashion Inspired By Battle Royale For those of you not...

High Fashion Inspired By Battle Royale

For those of you not keeping up with New York Fashion Week (totally won’t hold it against you), Band of Outsiders unveiled their Spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection. The brand’s designer, Scott Sternberg, says the line was inspired by Battle Royale - the 2000 Japanese cult film about a class of middle-schoolers sent away to an island and forced to fight to the death. It’s basically The Hunger Games, but way better.

Check out the run way pics above and compare them to the class uniforms from the film. If only they somehow incorporated those sweet exploding collars into the runway show.
