Integrity Toys 2016 convention: SUPERMODELS - Larger than Life on the Catwalk

One of the hottest anticipated events of any doll calendar is the Integrity Toys annual convention. The announcment and registration process always takes place in spring. It finally arrived: W Club members have May 2nd to register, while, if there are any places left, the general public can register on May 3rd. Let's check out what is happening:

This year's theme is the supermodels. And of course, it means the original, 90s ladies, not the lesser clones of later years and the unworthy carrying the title lately. The supermodels of that era were known to everyone by their first name, they were truly beloved and admired, they were the true stars of the era, they were on magazine covers instead of actors and celebrities. This year's convention is all about celebrating some of the most glamorous ladies to ever live and every Integrity Toys doll line offered at the convention will be inspired by these fashion icons! Here's a list of what the 2016 SUPERMODEL Convention Pass offers:

For the price of $500.00 US (or $475 if you take advantage of the early bird special), you'll get:

  • A welcome bag with a very special give-away right when you arrive (usually a doll or an outfit).
  • Two full sit down dinners and a luncheon with highly sought-after swag (i.e. dolls) given out at each event.
  • Opportunity to participate in the "Fashion Bazaar", a sales-room for collectors to sell and swap their own goodies (and just like last year, renting a table is FREE and opened to all registered convention guests). Also, at the "Fashion Bazaar", guests can enter our annual costume contest and party with IT staff.
  • Access to the Integrity Toys Collection display, where you get to see all of those cool dolls in person; this year's display will feature a short trip down memory lane with an exhibit covering some of the highlights of the years of Integrity Toys in business.
  • Access to the IT Direct Souvenir shop, where you can scoop up all of those special and limited edition Integrity Toys convention exclusive collectibles and other great deals, just for convention attendees.
  • The opportunity to take part in exciting and unique workshops.
  • The opportunity to purchase the exclusive convention collection.
  • The opportunity to purchase the ever popular Color Infusion Style Lab collection.
  • For W Club Members only, the opportunity to sign-up for the Members-Only luncheon.
  • Exciting raffles with one-of-a-kind dolls created just for the event by the Integrity Toys design team.
  • For people with budding design talents, the chance to enter the annual design contest, where this year again, one winner will see their original design turned into an IT production doll.

This year's convention hotel is the Chicago Airport hotel with cutting-edge design, innovative spaces and stylish guest rooms and suites. Experience the convenience of staying near O'Hare Airport, down-town Chicago and exciting shopping destinations while at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. Hyatt Regency O'Hare has an impressive modern aesthetic that speaks to business and leisure travellers. The hotel has large, open meeting spaces, featuring state-of-the-art technology and relaxing areas where you will enjoy spending time with your friends. Of course there is a special convention hotel rate of $174.00 + tax/night (single and double occupancy only)* for your stay with them during the convention. This rate is available starting Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 (check-in) until Sunday, October 16th, 2016 (check-out). As usual, a limited number of rooms are also available for those of you that would like to extend your stay for the days before and after the convention. Please note that IT and the W Club Liaisons will not be involved in this and you will need to contact the hotel yourself for the extended stay options and make these arrangements directly with the hotel's reservation desk.

This year again, Integrity Toys will be releasing the full registration package containing all of the glamorous details of the convention, including more details on themes and activities of the convention in a few months This is done to give everyone a chance to be around when the registration package is released, since the sign-up for many of the activities will be limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis to those who will have already registered for the convention when the registration package is released. The exact time and date of the registration package being posted will be sent out to conventioneers a few days ahead, so that they can be prepared when this most awaited moment happens.

This year again, Integrity Toys is offering multiple options to register for the event and the earlier you sign up, the earlier you will gain access to the IT Direct Souvenir Shop at the convention itself. No matter if you chose to sign up using the early bird special or the instalment plan, the earlier you sign up, the better your queue number will be for the wait lines. Last year, the convention sold out in less than 48 hours; if you are planning on attending the event, do not delay registering when the link goes live on Monday, May 2nd, 2016 at 6:00PM (for W Club members) or Tuesday May 3rd for the general public. Convention registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and spots cannot be reserved for anyone.

Here are the two options available this year to purchase your registration package:

Early Bird Special:
$475.00 US (payable in full immediately at registration)

If you pay in full IN ONE COMPLETE PAYMENT before May, 13th 2016 at Noon Eastern (New York time), you save $25.00! If the convention is not sold out after this date, the full price of registration will be $500.00 US.

or

Installment Plan:
$500.00 US (payable in three installments)

To help guests budget for their trip a little better, this year again, an instalment plan is offered. The first instalment of $150.00 US is due immediately at registration to secure your convention pass(es) and then, you will be invoiced via email for the balance in two additional instalments of $175.00 each on approximately May 24th and June 24th, 2016 respectively.

  • Children under the age of 10 will not be admitted.
  • Convention registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and we cannot reserve spots for anyone.
  • No absentee packages available.
  • No proxies are accepted and Integrity Toys will only acknowledge one registrant per registration pass. The convention team will only speak directly with the guests who are registered to actually attend the convention in person. As always, you are more than welcome to make your own arrangements to purchase someone's convention goodies before or after the fact, but Integrity Toys will not deal with third parties who are not physically in attendance at the convention. This includes (but is not limited to) purchasing a pass for someone else when you yourself are not attending, pre-ordering the convention collection unless you are registered and attending, etc. If you find someone to attend on your behalf, please make sure that you both understand that they are the ones who will have to purchase the convention registration or any other items offered during the event in their own name and then, ship them to you afterwards. Any arrangements that you make with this person will be strictly between you and him/her and Integrity Toys will no longer recognize or deal with anyone else other than the guests actually present in person at the convention and whose sole name appears on the ticket.
  • The Fashion Bazaar is an event started in the fall of 2014, which was a huge success with attendees. Guests are encouraged to come wearing their best disguise, as there will be a costume party and an actual sales room where guests will be allowed to bring down Integrity Toys goodies to sell in the ballroom (more details about this will be in the upcoming registration package).
  • You can make a vacation of this convention and bring yout family. One the reasons behind the creation of the "Fashion Bazaar" was to have a more "optional" event that would give guests some free time so that they could go explore if they wished on Friday night. Please note, however, that this convention is geared towards adult collectors and children below 10 years old are not allowed. Only fully registered guests will be allowed to attend the various functions and gain access to the IT Direct Store and Style Lab. While your family members are more than welcome to stay with you at the convention hotel, please note that if you would like your family members to actually attend the convention functions, they will need to be fully registered.
  • If you want to get early access to the Souvenir Shop, you should buy your registration package as soon as possible, since the date/time stamp of your paid invoice will determine your wait line priority number at the event.
  • In order to give a chance to a maximum number of guests to purchase their convention passes first, Integrity Toys will release the registration package within the next few months. If you are planning on submitting an application to be a table host, you may start to find your table mates immediately. When the time comes, you'll be prepared to send Alain Trembley your complete table list. There's no need to contact him about it ahead of time. Having a complete table of guests will not guarantee you a position as a table host.
  • There will not be a JEM-specific event or souvenir available at the convention. There will be Color Infusion products featured in our Style Lab, which also share a body with JEM.
  • Budget concerns: typically, registration package included, it is a good idea to set aside a minimum of $2000 to $3000 US to have a comfortable and worry free time at the convention.
  • Transfers and cancellations will be accepted up to 60 days before the start of the convention, therefore until August 12th, 2016. A fee of $75.00 US for transfers or cancellations per convention pass will be applicable. After August 12th, 2016, no refunds or transfers will be accepted and you will forfeit the price of your ticket if you choose not to attend the event. This is not negotiable and out of fairness to everyone, no exceptions will be made.
  • Integrity Toys will not accept last minute requests to have table hosts pick up goodies on your behalf. Souvenirs are counted and table hosts will be instructed to bring back any souvenirs that are not spoken for. If you are not present in person, you forfeit your convention pass and there will be no refunds issued or souvenirs sent after the convention.

So what do you think about this year's theme? How will the well established characters of Integrity Toys lines transform into 90s supermodels? Which character will be Linda? Christy? Naomi?

Steiffgal's Quite Keen On This Steiff-Man Named Green!

Ever felt like running away and joining the circus? Well, this inquiry from a new friend in Europe about a fantastic Steiff entertainer may just have you packing your bags! Check out Åslaug's great family heirloom, a rare Steiff doll. She shares over a number of correspondences....

"Hello,

Do you know what the name/number of this Steiff-man is?

My mother in law was the owner of this. She collected a lot of things. Kind of a hoarder. She passed away in January. Among the things she has left behind is more than 1,000 dolls. Mostly bought at flea markets. Most of all she was interested in the culture and specially toys of her childhood.

A lot of her collected items has been given away to different collections and museums. But, this doll I fell in love with and we are intending to keep it. We also found 15 Steiff animals. Have sold seven, but have some still.

Kind regards and thank you from Norway"

No clowning around... this is one find that belongs in the spotlight! What Åslaug has here is a Steiff doll named "Green," probably because of the color of his eye-catching coat. Green is 43 cm tall and fully jointed. In addition to his gold and button trimmed outerwear, he wears a yellow felt vest, black felt pants, and Victorian looking, buttoned up "spat" style footwear. His face and head comes to life with black shoebuton eyes, a hand painted mouth, rosy cheeks, and a shock of handsome silver-grey hair. Green appeared in the line from 1911 through 1919. His series number is 88 (indicating that his pattern is a doll) and his article number is 43, meaning in this case that he stands 43 cm tall. A picture of Green as he appeared as new is pictured here on the left, the photo is from Pfeiffer's 1892-1943 Sortiment.

Green was produced as one of many characters performing in a charming series of circus themed window displays.  Green is cataloged as a "lackey," which probably means he would have acted as a footman or assistant to other performers or to the circus managers.  Steiff's circus displays were created by Steiff creative freelancer Albert Schlopsnies starting in 1910. The first Steiff circus display made its debut at the Wertheim Department Store in Berlin. According to Cieslik's Button In Ear The History of the Teddy Bear And His Friends, "It had three circus-rings and visitors to the Steiff show were given a circus program - a comic adaptation of an actual program." (A copy of this program is to the left; if you click on it you can read the most entertaining text. The photo is from Cieslik.) Over the next decade, about 30 authentic character dolls including clowns, ringmasters, acrobats, musicians, and other performers were produced - in addition to stables of circus performing animals. Many characters were based on real life circus professionals at the time.

Steiffgal hopes this discussion on Steiff's turn-of-last century circus performers and displays has been the greatest show on Earth for you.

Custom G1 Cartoon Ark Spaceship Scratch Built Model Photos

It's a good day for artistic endeavors by Transformers fans! Tonight we have a batch of photos to bring you from Alvaro Valdivieso Paredes, who's gone to Facebook posting his custom built Autobot starship Ark as seen in the G1 cartoon. Though this one might take some cues from the mild redesign it had for its appearance in Beast Wars rather than being strictly original-cartoon-derived. Though no distinct scale is given, seeing the real estate it occupies on tabletops helps give a sense of its bulk. While it may not be the biggest ever, it's no less impressive, and you can keep reading to see it in full!

Transformers Subscription Service 5.0 goes live

So originally I was going to do a third BotCon report discussing the upcoming Transformers Collectors' Club exclusives, but it's taken until now for them to finally put their Figure Subscription Service 5.0 images online. But not just the images, they're already taking subscribers as well. This starts just as the first figure from the 4.0 subscription has begun to ship. This is all thanks to the Club ending at the end of the year and the need to get everything that's planned prepared in time.

Currently the orders are only available to existing members, but they do promise to soon make it open to past members as well since there's no longer a way to join the club. All together there'll be six figures plus a seventh mystery figure that won't be revealed until the last shipment. Once again Combiner Wars will be sourced for the sub featuring a new incarnation of the Wreckers making use of the Impactor figure from the TFSS 4.0 set. Three more members will come from 5.0 along with one of the mystery figures from either sub, combining to form Wreckage.

There are other surprises in this set as well such as the return of the BotCon 2015 gorilla Pretender shell used for Oilmaster and the first ever release the Grand Maximus Pretender shell outside of Japan. It's a pretty eclectic group of figures, especially with only one Autobot in the set just like with 4.0. Let's take a look at who they're offering in no particular order:

  • Decepticon Former Double-Spy Counterpunch - Uses the Wheeljack mold with a new head to form part of Wreckage. In-story his Punch mode has been removed leaving just Counterpunch.
  • Predacon Scientist Fractyl with Scorponok - Original character Fractyl is a repaint of BotCon 2016 Terrorsaur which in turn is a retool of Combiner Wars Skydive and part of the Wreckers team. Scorponok is a repaint of Legends Scamper.
  • Decepticon Commander Megatron with Spacewarp - Megatron is a repaint of his Generations Legends figure in his canceled G2 Combat Hero colors. Spacewarp is an original club character, redecoed from Generations Payload. Both figures can be stored inside the Double Pretender shell reapinted from Grand Maximus' shell.
  • Autobot Commander Optimus Prime with Hi-Q - Same molds used for the BotCon 2015 Oilmaster figure. Optimus is a remold of Generations Legends Swerve in G2 Laser colors; Hi-Q is a repaint of Generations Flanker. The shell is in the colors of the canceled gorilla shell first seen back at BotCon 1996.
  • Paradron Medic Lifeline with Quickslinger - Lifeline is a repaint of Generations Arcee as a Paradron Medic from the original G1 cartoon. Quickslinger is another Flanker repaint, this time in homage to the motorcycle of the same name from the Cybertron toy line.
  • Decepticon Experiment Toxitron - A repaint of the Combiner Wars Motormaster figure with an alternate Optimus Prime head, based on a club original character. He forms the main body of Wreckage. This figure was originally intended to be Scourge or Nemesis Prime, but e-Hobby's own Grand Scourge figure (released jointly by the TCC) caused them to change to Toxitron instead.

The mystery bonus seventh figure is rumored to be Punch to go with Counterpunch, but we wont know for sure until it's released with the final figure. The subscription goes for US$330 plus shipping, but can be split equally over three payments. The orders are only open until May 26 with no order limit as these will be made on-demand. I'm getting TFCC 4.0, but I'm not sure yet if I want these figures. Guess I've got a few weeks to figure it out.

The Maggie Bessie Cloth Doll - A Doll of Simplicity and Grace

Would you pay tens of thousands of dollars for a doll?  Maybe the question should be would you pay tens of thousands of dollars for a beautiful handmade 19th century doll that is the epitome of simplicity and grace?  If I had that kind of money I probably would - especially if the doll kept increasing in value.

The VERY RARE AMERICAN CLOTH MORAVIAN DOLL KNOWN AS "MAGGIE-BESSIE" IN ORIGINAL COSTUME, shown in the picture above, is from the Theriaults.com website.

According to their description: 13" All-cloth doll with flat-dimensional face, oil-painted complexion, hair and facial features, short brown center-parted hair with feathering details, shaded blue eyes, black and brown upper eyeliner, feathered brows, outlined nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth, stitch-jointed body, oil-painted lower arms and legs....  Comments: created by Bessie and Maggie Pfohl in their Moravian community of Salem, North Carolina, early 1900s. Value Points: the rare American doll is flawlessly preserved with daintily detailed hair, and most endearing expression, with original costume. Realized Price: $13,000.

The A COMPANION AMERICAN CLOTH MORAVIAN DOLL KNOWN AS "MAGGIE-e BESSIE", shown in the picture above, is also from the Theriaults.com website.

According to their description: 13"  All-cloth doll with flat-dimensional perfectly rounded face enhanced by chin definition, oil-painted complexion, hair and facial features, short brown center-parted hair with feathering at sides of forehead, shaded blue eyes, black and red upper eyeliner, feathered brows, outlined nose with accented nostrils, closed bow-shaped mouth, stitch-jointed body, oil-painted lower arms and legs.....  Comments: created by Bessie and Maggie Pfohl in their Moravian community of Salem, North Carolina, early 1900s; the hand-crafted artistry and personality of each Maggie-Bessie doll is evident in this and the preceding lot. Value Points: most appealing shy expression with beautifully painted facial details and blush. Realized Price: $9,000.

I found the pair of "Maggie Bessie" dolls, shown above, totally charming and, of course, had to find out more. After all what culd make a pair of dols worth $22,000 collectively?

I knew there were many different types of dolls created by members of different Moravian Churches for benefits, etc.  I had to know what made these dolls so special and worth so much. Here's what I found:

It's not often that a doll has a master's thesis written about them, but "Maggie Bess" did in 2011. Laura Katherine Waters wrote The Appearance of Simplicity: Winston-Salem's "Maggie Bess" Dolls and Twentieth Century Antimodernism for her Master of Arts Degree at The University of North Carolina Wilmington.  Fortunately, for all of us, she created a .pdf here.  It's an interesting read and I hope you get a chance to read it.

According to her thesis: Margaret “Maggie” Gertrude and Carolina Elizabeth “Bessie” Pfohl produced these playthings in the Moravian Community of Salem from approximately 1890 to 1940. Appearing basic in design, these cloth dolls epitomized simplicity from their handmade construction to the clothes they wore. As a reflection of sentiment following the American Civil War and the onset of industrialization and modernism, the manufacturers and consumers used them to express anti-modern conservative values. The Maggie Bessie Collection illustrates a traditional gender divide, a rejection of mass-produced products of leisure, an alternative to the mass-produced products of
leisure, and twentieth century Moravian and White, Southern Identities.......

Laura's thesis contains a picture of the Maggie Bessie doll at the Old Salem Toy Museum as well pictures of the original pattern pieces for the three sizes of the Maggie Bessie dolls. What's interesting about the templates is they used greeting cards for some of the pattern pieces. If you're a doll pattern designer I'm sure you can relate to that. I know I can.

Image Courtesy of The Old Salem Toy Museum and Antiques and The Arts Weekly

The Maggie Bessie dolls, shown in the picture above, are part of the doll collection of the Old Salem Toy Museum and appeared in an article entitled "The Old Salem Toy Museum Celebrates Fourth Year" in the newsletter for the Antiques and The Arts Weekly website.  The article was about Tom and Anne Gray, the Old Salem Toy Museum and the toys they donated to the museum collection.

According to their article: Maggie-Bessie doll, Salem, N.C., 1890–1910; painted cloth. Distinctive cloth dolls made in Salem by sisters Margaret Gertrude and Caroline Elizabeth Pfohl for more than 50 years became known as “Maggie-Bessie” dolls. The Pfohls made 435 dolls by 1916. The miniature doll is from a set of six also by the Pfohls, circa 1935. Old Salem Toy Museum.

I also found a wonderful article on Maida Today entitled "The Story of the Maggie Bessie Doll" on Maida Today which was written by Bradley Justice. It has a lot of information on the sisters and many pictures of various Maggie Bessie dolls.  I hope you get a chance to read it.

My understanding was the dolls were made for 50 years from 1890 until 1940 in three sizes: small, 13-14 inches, 2 large, 17-18 inches, and 3 “great big” 20-22 inches.  All seemed to be beautifully made.

I wanted to see if I could find any dolls created early on.  Here's what I found:

I found the Sensational “Maggie Bessie” Cloth Doll, shown in the picture above, on the MorphyAuctions.com website.

According to their description: Made by Maggie and Bessie Pfohl in Salem, NC. All cloth with painted hair and features, detailed blue eyes, closed mouth, rosy cheeks, short painted blonde hair with center part; all original bonnet (yellowed), dress (some age wear), slip, panties, stockings, garters and shoes. Highly desirable and sought-after doll, in the smallest size made! Condition (Excellent). Size 13" T.tional “Maggie Bessie” Cloth Doll.

The Rare All Cloth Maggie Bessie Doll c. 1918, shown in the picture above, is from the LiveAuctioneers.com website.

According to their description: Ca. 1918, Salem, NC. Beautifully oil-painted face with very detailed eyes, ears, nose and mouth, painted light brown hair with center part (some paint flakes on hair). Cloth body with joints at shoulders and hips, cloth is painted over-all and some paint is flaking from hands and lower arms. Maggie Bessie wears her original clothing: pink cotton dress, white cotton slip and onesie with tiny lace trim. Clothing is in excellent condition with some light soil on the back of the dress. She has her original bonnet, shoes (missing one sole and one buckle), and stockings......

The AMERICAN CLOTH FOLK DOLL WITH PAINTED EARS KNOWN AS "MAGGIE-BESSIE" c. 1890shown in the picture above is from the Theriaults.com website.

According to their description: 18" All-cloth doll constructed with five pie slice-shaped seams at the back of the head from the center crown, small chin seam, flat dimensional face, oil-painted complexion, hair and features, short brown center-parted hair with little tendrils of curls above the painted ears, large shaded blue eyes, painted brows and eyeliner, outlined nose with accented nostrils, small closed mouth with prim lips, firmly stuffed body with stitch jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, separate thumb, wearing original costume with neatly embroidered bodice....  Comments: an early model of the American folk doll by Maggie and Bessie Pfohl of Old Salem, North Carolina, circa 1890. The doll was featured on the Spring 1999 cover of Doll News. Value Points: very fine artistry of painted complexion and facial features on the well-preserved early example of the "Maggie-Bessie" doll, with rare painted ears.

There were several other Maggie Bessie dolls for sale on the Theriaults.com website at one point in time - all beautiful, and, yes all worth a lot.

Reproduction Maggie Bessie dolls have become popular over the last few years with doll makers.  I wanted to see who was making the reproduction dolls and if there were any patterns out there currently for them.  Here's what I found:

Cindy Ribet sells Reproduction dolls here.

Susan Fosnot sells a pattern for a Reproduction Maggie Bessie on her Susan Fosnot website.  The pattern, for the doll in the picture above, is here.

According to her description: Maggie Bessie dolls were made by two sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth Pfohl, in North Carolina around the turn of the century.  This is a faithful recreation of their original design.  The pattern yields a maximum amount of realistic shape from a minimum number of pieces and seams. Authentic early 20th century dress pattern is included, as well as pattern for drawers and slip. Pattern includes template for the face.  Finished height is 14”.

As far as I'm concerned the Maggie Bessie dolls are definitely examples of simplicity and grace.  I'm sure the Pfohl sisters would be pleased to know their beautifully made dolls are highly cherished and sought after by doll collectors today. I wonder what they would think of the price?

Linda's Review of The Complete Photo Guide To Doll Making by Nancy Hoerner, Barbara Matthiessen, and Rick Petersen

In doing my research on various doll histories I ran across a doll making book entitled "The Complete Photo Guide To Doll Making" by Nancy Hoerner, Barbara Matthiessen, and Rick Petersen. This book contained information on making several of the dolls I was posting about so I thought maybe I should review this as part of my Linda's Review of Doll Making Books series.

If you would like to take a quick peak inside this book Amazon.com offers one here.  Google Books also provides a look inside here.

According to the books description: This book is a comprehensive how-to book about all aspects of doll making. It serves as a reference and technique guide for making dolls in a wide variety of styles. Full-size patterns are provided as well as artist galleries for inspiration. The organization provides easy access to information with step-by-step directions and color photos. Other doll-making books focus on one particular doll style. Some are purely inspirational, showing dolls made by other artists and crafters. This book provides complete how-to instruction on all types of dolls.

If you are a novice doll maker who wants to be introduced to all the world of doll making has to offer this book is a good beginning as it is filled with all sorts of dolls from simple handmade dolls to a beginner to intermediate cloth art dolls.
