C2E2 2016: Weta Workshop
I kicked off day one of the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo with a whirlwind tour of the exhibitor hall about an hour before closing. Weta Workshop had a large display near the entrance, showing off their requisite Lord of the Rings and Hobbit licensed figures.
They were all well and nice - especially if you like orcs - but were all rather familiar. When you cover these conventions year in year out, you start to see the same things over and over from certain manufacturers. Hell, even the show exclusives felt like stuff I'd seen before (am I crazy?).
There was one thing that was hard to ignore, though. It was a giant robot planted front and center at the booth. It was a statue promoting the Giant Killer Robots tabletop/augmented reality game. Setting aside the game stuff (which I'm hoping to get more info on soon), that statue was a marvel to behold. It has the kind of boxy, weathered mechanical design you'd see in Titanfall or a Neill Blomkamp film. The level of detail on it is truly remarkable, and I'm told it was quite expensive to produce. I especially love the wrecked Aston Martin at its feet for a sense of scale.
If you want to see the robot (as well as things that aren't the robot), check out my photos in the gallery. The Middle-earth film franchise may have worn out its welcome but from an aesthetic standpoint the figures are still worth seeing. Just look at the Minas Tirith and Barad-dur miniatures!

C2E2 2016: Enterbay
Enterbay is known for their realistic 1/6-scale figures, often featuring movie and sports stars. Their booth at C2E2 was mostly NBA-oriented this year. The presentation, I felt, was really cool and well-executed.
If you're not a basketball fan then you probably won't fully appreciate the setup of their display. They did a great job of catering to nostalgia, which is always powerful with NBA fans. The setup was a series of matchups between current and past stars: Penny Hardaway vs. Kevin Durant, Shaquille O'Neal vs. Blake Griffin, Derrick Rose vs. Allen Iverson, and of course Michael Jordan vs. Kobe Bryant (Kobe's old enough where this matchup actually happened).
Since this is Chicago, Enterbay usually gives a little extra attention to the 90's Bulls. Joining the existing Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman figures is Scottie Pippen (finally).
Their movie lineup features some martial arts legends. You've probably seen their Bruce Lee figure, but now there is a spot-on Donnie Yen (portraying his role as Ip Man). Appropriate! Even better, there is finally a Jean-Claude Van Damme figure. In case you didn't recognize him, his shirt is conveniently stamped with his initials, "JCVD." I love it.

C2E2 2016: Bluefin Distribution part 1
Sometimes you just want to see a smorgasbord of figures from all over the place. That's when you head to Bluefin Distribution.
Sentinel, which is usually geared toward anime figures, has picked up the Iron Man license. And man are these figures cool, especially with their LED lighting. These poseable Iron Man figures are based more on the comics than movies, but there is certainly some overlap in their designs. Well, that is until you get to Tony Stark's face. For some reason he looks like an intensely irritated Asian dad.
Tamashii Nations brought three of the coolest things ever in their Star Wars/feudal Japan mash-up figures. You've seen these before but I just wanted to highlight again how freaking awesome samurai Boba Fett is. It's unfortunate these are so bleeding expensive!
You can see plenty more Star Wars in the gallery. Comic properties include DC with some Batman/Superman/Justice League figures, Marvel Studios (along with the life-sized Iron Man which I feel I'm seeing at every con), and... Mike Tyson? Sure, why not.

C2E2 2016: Bluefin Distribution part 2
Star Wars mash-ups aren't the only thing Tamashii Nations brought to the table; they had plenty of anime figures from their various Figuarts lines as well.
Dragon Ball Z continues to have a large presence, featuring prominently in S.H. Figuarts, Figuarts Zero, and Tamashii Buddies displays. The only recent-ish stuff is in the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku vs. player two Frieza display. Dragon Ball has gotten kind of stupid, hasn't it?
You know what people probably don't think is stupid? Sailor Moon! You can see the full complement of Sailor Senshi S.H. Figuarts, as well as some replica props and a lonely Figuarts Zero Sailor Moon.
The gallery has a lot more including Mario, Ghibli, and a whole lot of Gundam. Take a look and see if anything whets your appetite!

2016 McDONALD'S #DCCOMICS SUPER HEROES HOT WHEELS HAPPY MEAL KIDS TOYS #Batman
Batman Toy Collectors should be having a lot of fun right now because McDonald's has just introduced a new set of Happy Meal Toys which feature a few characters from that world. The toys in question are a set of 8 Diecast Hot Wheels Cars which all have a DC Comics Superheroes theme. They include:
#1 Superman, #2 Batman, #3 The Flash, #4 Green Lantern, #5 The Joker, #6 Robin, #7 Cyborg and #8 Aquaman
Yes, three of them are "Batman-related" and I agree, the "Joker" is NOT a hero but he's featured here anyway, ha ha! One last thing, check out this great "Toy Review" Video I came across:
