2015 NYCC Exclusive Masters of the Universe 3.75" Figures
Shockwave announced as a logical next Masterpiece
It's happening! It's finally happening! After years of fan demand and false rumors Takara Tomy is making the emotionless Decepticon scientist and occasional leader Shockwave as an upcoming Transformers Masterpiece! At the All Japan Model & Hobby Show 2015 (or simply Hobby Show 2015) Takara Tomy has displayed all of their upcoming MPs along with our first look at Shockwave and Hot Rod (or Rodimus) in a pretty early unpainted state.
Shockwave looks perfect and is proof that a transforming gun can be done right in the Masterpiece line. The main concern fans have had of a potential MP Shockwave is in the legs. The originally G1 figure had skinny legs and Masterpiece Megatron had ridiculously scrawny legs for his size. But Shockwave looks to have bulked out his lower legs thanks to folded panels similar to some of the Autobot cars' legs. The rest of the figure is pure perfection, though I wonder how they'll manage the original figure's gun barrel since these figures tend to shy away from detachable parts. I'm also hoping his gun hand and regular hand are molded in translucent purple like the original, maybe if not now then as a later variant or a replacement part? Judging from his standing next to Hot Rod it appears he'll be around the same height as MP Soudwave or Starscream.
The original Shockwave is one of those figures that have eluded fans over the years. It started as a figure by ToyCo under the name 4 Changeable Astro Magnum and later Galactic Man at Radio Shack (popularly named "Shackwave" by Transformers fans) among other variations before Hasbro licensed the mold for the 1985 Transformers line up. Fan demand for a reissue have been met with claims that the molds have been lost. Supposedly ToyCo themselves (which is still operational in South Korea) commissioned the figure from an unknown Chinese factory which likely owns the mold. So it's unknown if the molds even exist any longer as they're expensive to store and destruction is common. Hasbro and Takara Tomy have made several reiterations of the character in various lines, but none have really captured the iconic look of Shockwave in both modes.
Shifting over to Hot Rod he's pretty much fulfilling all expectations. He appears to be the same size as the other Autobot cars and appears to borrow much of his transformation from previous incarnations. This works in his favor as it decreases the number of seams in the legs and his body appears to be mainly the car mode folding over itself. Of course it'll be much more complex than that being an MP, but it's a general idea and looks fantastic. His chest looks a bit plain, but look good with the flame pattern painted on, trust me.
Now, there have been rumors lately of both Hound and Arcee also coming. The Hound rumor is a little more credible, especially with Takara Tomy currently charging through the early Autobot cars. The Arcee rumor comes from an image of a silhouette of the character with Japanese text. Problem is it's numbered MP-29 even though Hot Rod and Shockwave haven't been numbered yet. The other problem is that the text has been translated to say "Hound" which makes it seem like a hastily made photoshop by someone that can't read Japanese. Then again, Hot Rod needs his gal.
