Takara Tomy gets obscure again with Masterpiece Clampdown
Takara Tomy announced Transformers Masterpiece MP-14C Clampdown today which lead to just about everyone asking, "who's Clampdown?" The latest in the MP line of really obscure characters comes right after the release of blue Bluestreak, the previous Tiger Tracks release, and upcoming Road Rage and red Bumblebee among others. The original Clamp Down was released in 2003 as part of an e-Hobby exclusive repaint of the then reissued G1 Red Alert figure and based on the pre-Transformers Diaclone police car that would become Red Alert in 1985.
Much like the original, the new Clampdown will be a repaint of MP-14 Red Alert and also an exclusive, this time to Takara Tomy Mall. He'll be limited to 2,000, priced at ¥7,992, and released sometime in December. He includes Red Alert's weapons as well as Sideswipe's pile drivers. With Clampdown announced it is almost certain that he'll be followed by his brother and Sideswipe repaint, Deep Cover, later on.

This is Starscream, he only looks like Thundercracker
In the 2014 Transformers Generations line we saw Hasbro take a step away from G1 version of popular characters and throw the Transformers Armada TV series a bone with an Armada Starscream figure. Later that year Takara would follow suit with a repaint based on their version of the original Armada (or Micron Densetsu) Starscream figure. At the time everyone said this figure was ripe for repainting and it turned out we were right. Back at BotCon this year it was revealed that the Transformers Collectors Club would be giving the figure a new head and paint and releasing it as both Skywarp and Ramjet. That just left one obvious repaint for the mold: Thundercracker... or is it?
You see, in the original Armada toy line Hasbro would repaint the Starscream figure blue and call it Thundercracker, even though that character wasn't on the cartoon. On the toon it was Starscream himself who would become blue as a "supermode". He would even say the infamous line "I look like Thundercracker" even though the character wouldn't appear in the trilogy until two series later. Takara Tomy released a similar version of the figure, but named it more accurately as Starascream Supermode rather than name it Thundercracker.
So jump to 2015 and the 2014 Armada Starscream is being repainted after the 2003 Starscream Supermode, itself a repaint of 2002 Starscream for 2016. The new Starscream is a very basic, but rather striking repaint with the blue, black, and red colors. He'll be out in January for ¥3,100 at general retail (thankfully). Now someone just has to do the Sam's Club repaint and the set will be complete.
