News About Upcoming Conventions

I have more information about the Jamieshow Convention which will take place on September 28-30 in Canandaigua, NY.
There are three workshops which will take place simultaneously on Friday. George Gonzales is doing Photography, repainting eyes and lips is being taught by Peg Stroud of PegFamousGirls and Styling Doll Wigs and Hair is being taught by Michael Scott. Attendees will be divided into three groups and will rotate through the classes so everyone will get a chance. The groups will be small enough for all to get personal attention. The workshops will take place in the Angelic Dreamz  historic firehouse building, the loft of which is above the shop. I've been there and it's a wonderful setting.

More about the teachers:
—You all know George's photography from the business and from his posts on the doll boards. They speak for themselves.
—Peg has been repainting and designing 12 and 16 inch dolls for more than 12 years.http://www.flickr.com/photos/89211057@N00/sets/  She is an accomplished tattoo artist and owns a business called Lady Luck Tattoo. http://www.tattooladyluck.com/
—Michael Scott designs and creates doll clothing.  http://michaelscottdesigns.blogspot.com He is also a professional cosmetician/hairdresser and he will demonstrate techniques to style the Jamieshow wig caps.

During the day on Saturday we will have a guided tour of the Strong Museum of Play's extensive doll collection and doll houses. http://www.museumofplay.org/collections/doll. Transportation and lunch is included.

Here is the outline of the schedule:
Friday:
-Opening breakfast reception and registration and Inn on the Lake.
-Workshops
-Angelic Dreamz will be closed to the public but open to convention attendees for VIP shopping.
-Cocktail Reception on the Veranda of the Sonnenberg Gardens overlooking the formal gardens.
Saturday:
-Trip to Strong Museum of Art and Toy Hall of Fame. Lunch
-"Speakeasy" Costume and Cocktail event at the Loft with live jazz and a few surprises.
Sunday:
-Closing Brunch with presentation of event doll.

There are still a few openings. Click here to go to Angelic Dreamz web page.

Sandra Stillwell announced that her August 9-12  Radio Days convention in Cincinnati, Ohio is now sold out! She is taking a waiting list from which spots may be filled if she can increase the numbers or in event of cancellations.
If you have never attended one of Sandra's events, get on the waiting list. You won't be sorry.
You can call Sandra at 502 377-5153.

The Wilde Imagination event sold out almost immediately but I've noticed several offers from people who are willing to proxy for those who can't attend. There is probably a waiting list as well. Go to the Wilde Imagination site for more information.

The Integrity Toys event is always a big, exciting convention with lots of attendees, doll swag and more. This year it's in Orlando. There are spots remaining if you want to attend. Here is the link.
_____________________

Yes, there are other conventions taking place between now and the end of October and when I get more information, I will post it.

If you've never been to a convention, you might want to look back about one year on my blog for my post which discusses how much it costs to attend a convention.

This was based on past experience and attendance at an Integrity Toys/Fashion Royalty convention. They have changed the format this year: one less meal, higher convention price, more expensive hotel - so the numbers aren't exactly accurate but you can get a good idea. As they get closer to the date, a detailed convention packet will be issued with specific prices for convention collection dolls and other events.

Don’t pull out your pokeballs yet, my fellow geeks, since many of these pokemon may be repulsive.  While the animals may be repugnant, the infographic is awesome in that some poor soul took hours of time to search the anals of the ecosystem and find these creatures to use for the real life pokemon infographic.  Thank you, anonymous guy who is a web search master, has probably never left his house, and likes dill pickles. Also, Metapod?  You can eat dirt, because ...

Mad Men dolls: here come the guys for the season finale

In my previous post you read about and saw the gorgeous dolls that Michael Williams made for the female characters of the 5th season of Mad Men, the incredible series of AMC. Now, as the season's finale is upon us, he presents the men of the series. Again, he accessorizes them with all the necessary props they used in this season.

Don Draper is of course the star of Mad Men. For him, Michael used a Silkstone Ken, the unfortunate victim ex-flame Andrea is a Barbie Basics leg wearing a Silkstone Red MaryJane pump, and the car is a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen car that only cost $10 at a dollar store 10 years ago. He photoshopped it from turquoise to red.

Roger Sterling, the wise-cracking partner of SCDP: Again he is a Silkstone Ken, he is holding a Barbie baby and the accessories include a My Scene phone, a Re-Ment repainted table, a VITRA miniature chair and custom-printed paper paraphernalia.

The man everyone loves to hate: Pete Campbell. To make him. Michael put a vintage Allan head on a VOLKS Neo-Go Guy Color articulated body. He wears a vintage Ken Special Date navy suit and his accessories include a repainted pencil sharpener film projector, a pair of generic fashion doll skis purchased at a doll show, a custom-printed lobster bib and book jacket.

Michael Ginsberg is the new guy on the show. Actually he is a Wedding Day Sparkle Ken groom, with a Misaki Destination Milan necktie and Barbie Loves Frank Sinatra jacket. His accessories include a College Student vintage Ken typewriter, a RE-MENT Hotel Buffet warming tray with RE-MENT French Restaurant and Fun Meals Lobsters, a Barbie Generation Girl Lara artist easel with custom-printed story boards and a One Modern Circle Ken portfolio.

Once again Michael has done an incredible job of bringing the Mad Men characters to life in a most iconic and ironic way through his dolls.

The BAT-BLOG.COM reported awhile back about Warner Bros' plan to have THE TUMBLER TOUR in major cities to promote THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Movie. Well, they recently went to Toronto, Ontario, Canada ( June 7th, 2012 ) and our Buddy Tom got these amazing photos ( Click on them for larger hi-res pics ). Yeah, he was kind enough to share and it's pretty cool to see these original movie prop vehicles up close.

As you can see they had the Tumbler Batmobile ( Black Version ) and the Bat-Pod Motorcycle. Oh yeah, that's Tom in the 2nd to last photo & then in the very last one his Buddy Frank is getting kneed by Batman ( or I guess I should more accurately say, "Bearded-Batman", Ha Ha! ) Thanks Guys for sharing your cool pics. It looks like everybody had a great time!

Feeling A Little "Tipsy" Over This Remarkable Steiff Tipped Bear Cub

So what's on your Steiff "bucket list?"  Those items that you hope and pray you may own someday during your lifetime?  Well, for Steiffgal, that would definitely include one of Steiff's original and child-like "Petsy" baby bears from the late 1920's.  So imagine her delight when she came across this remarkable Petsy, for sale at the upcoming June 12, 2012 London Toy Auction!  Take a look at this blue-eyed beauty below and see what you think... could he be on your list as well?

A handsome Steiff Petsy baby bear from the late 1920's
According to his catalog description, what we have here is...

"A rare and fine Steiff Petsy centre seam Teddy bear.   With white brown-tipped mohair, rare blue and black opaque glass side-glancing googlie-eyes, pronounced muzzle, pink stitched vertical nose [pictured below], mouth and claws, large wired ears, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump, inoperative growler and large FF button in ear [pictured below], circa 1929.  19in. (49 cm) high (needs a light clean, ear wires broken, slight staining to pads and gap in nose stitching.)

Provenance:  This bear belonged to the vendor’s late aunt, who was born in 1910. She would have been given him (or bought him) when she was 18 or 19, perhaps as an 18th birthday present, this would explain his amazing condition.  Steiff Catalogue inventory number probably 5335,2.  Page 30 of Steiff Sortiment, 1892-1943. Following Richard Steiff’s suggestion, that they make their bears more appealing to the American market; Steiff came up with this new design with wired ears, blue eyes and softer expression. Originally he was patented in January 1928, as Bushcy, this name was not a success and in November 1928 he became the bear cub Petsy."

Petsy's pink vertical stitched nose and large FF button in ear
Oh baby, what's not to love about this little bear cub?  Petsy had a very short, but very sweet, appearance in the Steiff catalog, only appearing from 1928 through the very early 1930's.  What made him different than past designs, among other factors, was his prominent middle facial seam which ran vertically from his forehead across his snout.  During his years in the line, Petsy was produced in two versions.  The first was a brown tipped mohair version with blue eyes (like the example under discussion) with pink/red facial and claw stitching.  The second was a brass mohair version with brown and black pupil eyes and black facial and claw stitching. The tipped version appeared in ten sizes ranging from 15 to 50 cm sitting (or 22 to 75 cm standing) while the brass version was only produced in one size:  22 cm sitting or 32 cm standing.  Tipped Petsy was also produced as a musical Ted in 17 and 20 cm (or 25 and 30 cm standing), on a four wheeled rolling cart in 20 and 25 cm, as a 17 cm puppet, and as a 17 cm purse.

Steiff's late 1920's-era Cheerio and 1950's-era Lulac rabbit
Of course, the eyes are windows to the soul and you cannot help but notice Petsy's most playful peepers.  They are made from turquoise and black glass, and can be tilted to the left and right to create funny and varying facial expressions.  These eyes can also be found on Steiff's comical dog Cheerio, who coincidentally - or not - appeared during the same time frame as Petsy.   Interestingly, these silly eyes were again featured on Steiff's 1950's era Lulac rabbit models.  Cheerio and Lulac are pictured above. However, most original Petsys featured conventional blue or brown round glass pupil eyes.

Steiffgal hopes that this discussion about Steiff's Petsy bears hasn't made your brown eyes blue.
