SDCC 2015: Everything Transformers from Hasbro
Hasbro didn't play all of their cards last month at BotCon, but they certainly played their best ones. Hasbro's display and presentation at San Diego Comic Con 2015 was a little lacking compared to years past. We did finally get to see Fan Built Combiner Victorion's team as figures, but the reaction has been mixed to say the least. They also brought along the Toys "R" Us Robots in Disguise exclusives, G1 reissues, and a couple Masterpiece figures we've seen before. Not an entirely new figure in the bunch (aside from an RID figure, more on that at the bottom). And most of all no sign of Titan Wars which it turns out is more than just a rumor from BotCon. More on that later.
I actually do like Victorion, she has a few figures that are absent from the other combiners. For starters each figure, now collectively known as the Torchbearers, has a weapon that can be combined to form an enormous sword. This is a feature that I think all of the Combiner Wars figures should have had from the start. Even Fall of Cybertron Bruticus had a big gun made from the individual Combaticon weapons. She also has unique hands and feet that don't appear to have secondary purposes as weapons; more like G1 and less like the current Combiner Wars figures. The hands even have articulated figures, something we don't see enough of outside of Masterpiece.
Her colors certainly make her stand out, but I think they'll be muted slightly at release when she's molded in those colors rather than hand painted as she is now. We also got names for the individual team members. The firetruck forming the torso is called Pyra Magna. The car with the mouth plate is Dustup, the other car is Jumpstream. The two helicopters are sisters, Stormclash (with the mask) and Skyburst. And the motorcycle making the chest armor is named Rust Dust. They used the word dust twice in one team, not incredibly imaginative.
Moving on we've got our only new Transformers announcement from SDCC: Scattershot. It's also the biggest disappointment. He's a minimal remold of Silverbolt which is bad enough, but he's also coming alone, no Technobots on the way. That isn't just troubling for the obvious reasons, but also because this is one of six planned uses of the mold between Hasbro and Takara Tomy (the Optimus/Motormaster mold is up to seven!). Time to move on to something new. This retooling of the mold isn't as good as the Cyclonus figure, I think it's the strange wings with the missing sections, not a feature of the original figure. Just to make things worse they also lost the name to Computron so he's Betatron now and the combiner head is the same as Superion's, colors and all.
Hasbro also dropped the bomb that they have no current plans to do any beast combiners (Predacon, Terrorcon, Seacons) or Dinobots. They wouldn't commit to saying no to releasing Takara Tomy's Deluxe Groove figure so we at least have that to be hopeful for.
Something we've heard was happening, but haven't seen yet is G2 repaints of the Aerialbots and Stunticons as box sets. If you're a G2 fan like me then these sets are pretty cool and faithful tributes to the originals. As a bonus they also includes new G2-inspired repaints of Blackjack and Powerglide to round the teams out. My one complaint is that I wish they had G2 style boxes like the G2 Fall of Cybertron Combaticons had, but I'll take these regardless. Haven't seen anything about release, hopefully they wont be too hard to get.
Hasbro was also promoting some of the G1 collectables. Toys "R" Us has Masterpiece Bluestreak showing up in stores now and MP Starscream (based on MP-11) coming in October. They've also offered a fresh look at their G1 Platinum reissues with the Conehead Seeker Squadren three pack, Blaster and Perceptor two pack, and Trypticon. All of those are Target exclusives and the Seekers are available now.
Last thing is the Toys "R" Us exclusive Robots in Disguise Clash of the Transformers series. The line features remolds of different 3-Step and Legion figures in new colors that apparently are based on the first season finale. The only completely new figure is Megatronus as a massive 5-Step, 11 inch figure that turns into a tank. These guys are also showing up in stores now.
So, yeah, that was really it. Lots of stuff we've seen before in one way or another and the only 100% new figure is a simplified TRU exclusive we've known about for a while. Maybe New York Comic Con will be better, that one isn't until October. Hasbro usually doesn't have a strong presence there (even though they're only a few hours away in Rhode Island), but it can't be worse than this.
