Print165 - Linda's How-Do-I Series? How To Make A Fabric Covered Round Basket E-Book

Since I had just finished my Linda's Blog post on the fabric covered baskets I had made I thought you might enjoy a step-by-step "How-to" on how to make one of your own. If you'd like to read my post entitled "During Another Craft Phase - Fabric Covered Baskets" please CLICK HERE.

How To Make A Fabric Covered Basket - Updated March 2015

Supplies Needed

1 Small Round Basket With Handle - 3" Round
1/4 Yard Fabric - 36" Wide
1" Lace Trim - 16" Long
DMC Embroidery Floss
Sewing Thread
Dual Temperature Glue Gun
Glue Sticks
Measuring Tape
Large Plain Piece Of Paper
Iron

Instructions

(Note - These instructions are for ADULT use only as they require the use of a hot glue gun. Always use caution when working with any kind of hot glue gun.)

1. Measure the width of your basket and then measure the height of your basket from the bottom of the basket to the top of the rim. Multiply the height of your basket times 2 and then add this to the width of your basket.

2. Follow the diagram shown below and draw a circle the width + height X2 of your basket on a large plain piece of paper. Draw a circle around your initial circle another 1/2" around for your seam allowance and gathering of your fabric. Now, to this adjusted circle you have just drawn add another 3/4" around for the ruffle.

3. Cut 2 pieces of fabric for your lining and basket cover according to the final circle pattern you have just drawn.

4. Measure the length of the handle of your basket from the bottom of the handle starting on the left hand side of the basket to the bottom of the handle on the right hand side of the basket and add 3/4" - this is your adjusted handle length. Measure the circumference of the handle and add 3/4" - this is your adjusted handle width.

5. Cut a rectangular strip of fabric the adjusted length of your handle by the adjusted width of your handle.

6. With wrong sides together (WST) turn both edges of your adjusted handle length under 1/4" and press.

7. With wrong sides together (WST) turn both edges of your adjusted handle width under 1/4" and press.

8. Wrap the handle fabric around the handle overlapping the pressed under edges until the handle fabric is tight to and completely covers the handle. Hand sew the overlap closed. Position the handle fabric so the hand sewn seam is on the underside of the handle.

9. Cut a slit in the center of your lining for the width plus height of the basket X2.

10. Cut a piece of the 1" lace trim to match the circumference of the circle plus 1/2" for an overlap.

11. With right sides together (RST) position the lace trim on the edge of the basket cover so the finished edge is facing towards the inside of the circle and the edges are overlapping. Then stitch the lace trim to the edge of the basket cover using a 1/4" seam allowance.

12. With right side together (RST) sew the lining to the basket cover using a 1/4" seam allowance.

13. Turn the lining and basket cover right sides out (RST).

14. Insert the basket through the slit in the lining and pull the basket cover up until the bottom and sides are tight.

15. Turn the sides of the
slit under 1/4" and then pull the lining up and around the bottom of the handles until they are completed covered. Overlap the turned under edges of the slit and then hand sew the slit closed.

16. Sew a gathering stitch 3/4" down from the edge of the cover with the DMC embroidery floss. Pull tightly to gather and then knot to secure. The gathering should be slightly over the rim of the basket as shown in the picture below.

17. Position the ruffle so it is facing upwards against the sides of the handle and then using the low temperature setting of the dual temperature glue gun glue the sides of the ruffle to the handles like those shown in the picture below.

18. Cut 4 strips of fabric 1/2" wide by 8" long and tie into 2" wide bows. Trim the ends and then glue two bows (one on top of the other) to the sides of the baskets using the low temperature setting of the dual temperature glue gun like those shown in the picture above.

19. Congratulations - You're Done!

Linda’s How-Do-I Series? How To Make Our Alpacas Rock, Babies Splashing In The Rain, It’s Raining Baby Boys, and It’s Raining Baby Girls Custom Fabric Wall Panel Picture New Free E-Book

I just love custom fabric.  Especially when it can be used to make quick and easy picture decorations and was so pleased with the way my Babies In The Pumpkin Patch Wall Panel Picture came out that when I was designing my Babies Splashing In the Rain Fabric Collection and Alpacas Rock Fabric Collection I decided to create several baby fabrics and one alpaca fabric that could be used to create several custom fabric panel pictures.

Last week I finally had some time to create some and decided to start with my Alpacas Brown Panel Fabric which creates a 9” by 12” custom fabric wall panel decoration. It was very easy to make so I proceeded to make my Babies Splashing In The Rain  Fabric Panel Small, my It’s Raining Baby Boys Fabric Panel, and my It’s Raining Baby Girls Fabric Panel.

Here's how I made my Alpacas Rock Custom Fabric Panel Picture:

SUPPLIES NEEDED

For The Alpacas Rock Custom Fabric Panel Picture

Fat Quarter Alpacas Brown Panel Fabric - http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/1951451
9" by 12" Stretched Cotton Canvas (I Used Artist's Loft)
9" by 12" Decorative Heavier Paper-stock For The Backing

For The It’s Raining Baby Boys Custom Fabric Panel Picture

Fat Quarter It’s Raining Baby Boys Fabric Panel - http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1621246
8" by 10" Stretched Cotton Canvas (I Used Artist's Loft)

For The It’s Raining Baby Girls Custom Fabric Panel Picture

Fat Quarter It’s Raining Baby Girls Fabric Panel - http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1620718
8" by 10" Stretched Cotton Canvas (I Used Artist's Loft)
8" by 10" Decorative Heavier Paper-stock For The Backing

Other Supplies Needed For All Four

Staple Gun (I used an Arrow Heavy Duty Staple Gun Tacker Model T50)
1/4" Staples (I used Arrow brand staples)
1 3/4" Picture Hanger With Saw Teeth
Double Sided Tape
Hammer
Paper Cutter (I used a Fiskars Scrapbooking Rotary Paper Trimmer - Deluxe Portable Design With Swing-out Arm)

DIRECTIONS - Updated March, 2015

1) Cut one fabric panel out of the fat quarter.

 2) Place the right side of the artist’s canvas on the  wrong side of the panel so it is centered and evenly spaced horizontally and vertically.

3) Wrap the two vertical sides of the fabric panel around the sides of the artist’s canvas to the back. Pull the fabric panel around the artist’s canvas so that it is evenly spaced and such that it is taut to all sides of the artist's canvas. Do not pull too tightly as your vertical lines won't be straight. Load the staple gun with the 1/4" staples and then with the fabric taut around the artist's canvas place 1 staple in the middle of the two back vertical sides.

4) Pull the fabric taut on the bottom left vertical side making sure the vertical lines on the front are still straight and then square the corner of the bottom left vertical side as shown in the picture and staple to hold.

5) Pull the fabric taut on the bottom right vertical side making sure the vertical lines on the front are still straight and then square the corners of the bottom right vertical side as shown in the picture and staple to hold.

6) Pull the fabric taut on the bottom horizontal side making sure the horizontal lines on the bottom front are still straight and then staple the left and right back bottom corners as shown in the picture to hold.

7) Repeat steps #6 and #7 for the top horizontal side and then pull the fabric taut on the top horizontal side making sure the horizontal lines on the top front are still straight and then staple the left and right top back corners as shown in the picture to hold.

8) Make sure the vertical and horizontal lines on the front of the fabric are straight. If they aren't remove the staples and repeat your steps. Once you are satisfied that your lines are straight staple each of the vertical sides two to four more times to hold the vertical sides taut. Once you are satisfied that your lines are straight staple the horizontal top and bottom sides one or two more times to hold the horizontal sides taut.

9) Turn your picture over and make sure that your vertical and horizontal sides are all straight and taut. If not remove your staples and repeat your steps.

10) Cut a piece of the decorative heavier paper-stock approximately 9" by 12" for the Alpacas Rock Custom Fabric Panel Picture backing. Place the decorative paper so that it is evenly spaced on the back with 1/16" showing along the vertical and horizontal edges. Trim as necessary.

11) Cut two strips of the double sided tape to fit the vertical sides and then tape them 1/8” away from the back vertical edges. Cut two strips of the double sided tape to fit the horizontal sides and then tape them 1/8” away from the back top and bottom edges.

12) Center the decorative heavier paper–stock on the back and then press down to tape it

13) Center the 1 3/4" picture hanger with saw teeth in the center of the top of the panel back and then hammer it to fasten it.

14) Hang your wall panel picture.

Since I was making them anyway I decided to create an e-book tutorial showing you how I made the Alpacas Rock Custom Fabric Panel Picture. All four of the custom fabric panel pictures are made the same way. They just use different size fabrics and different size cotton canvases so follow this tutorial for each of them.

Tweeterhead shines their signal on classic Batwoman statue

$

Lost in history thanks to DC's unceremonious reboot in the 1960's, high-end statue maker Tweeterhead revisits the now forgotten member of the Bat-family. While Barbara Gordon's popularity on the television series translated to the comics with rapt attention, the fans quickly erased any memory of Kathy Kane/Batwoman. But here she is, hoping to reclaim her former glory. Batwoman is represented in a 1/6th scale polystone statue, with a runway ready hand-on-the-hip pose. Her dutiful purse is even sculpted, so you can pretend to have a hairbrush hookshot at the ready.

Seeing some of Tweeterhead's respectable output in the last few months (the She-Ra and Skeletor statues spring to mind), I am anxious to see more of their vintage comic character creations. This looks nice for a character that has had little in the way of merchandise; a touch of realism (cheekbones) mixed with retro, 1950's design. Having read a few of her appearances (they are not bountiful), I can say this captures her affable, friendly attitude. It's not often someone is willing to make higher-end versions of obscure (relatively) comic characters, but if the name "Bat" is attached to the beginning then the likelihood skyrockets. Sideshow Collectibles has these on pre-order (as well as a limited to 250 pieces version via Tweeterhead's website) for $224.99, with optional payment plans (which have come in handy often for me).

Maketoys Hellfire Masterpiece-Style Not-Inferno Figure Prototype Pictures

Maketoys' website has updated with a set of prototype photos for their Inferno-derived Hellfire figure, part of their RE:Master Series of Masterpiece-style products. At what is probably a resin prototype stage (at least judging by the filenames) Hellfire is looking especially nice in robot mode, though the vehicle may be taking cues a bit too faithfully from the G1 toy. But this ought to look fantastic in Inferno colors, and probably in Artfire deco a little later down the line. Keep reading to see all the photos!

New 2015 Tonner Spring Mainline Release Dolls

Marley Wentworth has grown up. Tonner is offering one basic, three dressed dolls and two separate fashions (not shown.) The doll in the blue coat looks very much like Tyler.

 ______________________________

There is a line of new 18-Inch "My Imagination" Dolls. I think they can be very good competition against the American Girl doll as they are cute with nice hair and adorable outfits at a better price.
 ______________________________

My favorites are the Re-Imagination Dolls. These are dressed dolls with various sculpts ranging in price from $169.00 to $218.99.  Haddy Madigan, top left below, reminds me of Megan Boone who plays Elizabeth Keen on Blacklist. Blue eyes, shape of jaw, hair color, pressed together lips...my imagination?

I don't know who Charlie Dodgson is. Perhaps he's just a new sculpt. I am seriously in love with Bianca Lapin, the last of the four below. I adore the Duchess sculpt and her outfit is just crazy enough to appeal to me. It says her hair is rooted but it looks like a wig to me. She has a faux leather dress under the faux fur.  The 16" chic body is used for these girls. According to Dreamcastle's definition it uses Antoinette's lower body with larger shoulders and a larger bust.

My favorite Tonner sculpt, Supergirl....Ugh...why does she have to be so gorgeous?
$179.99 Retail "Bombshell" Supergirl.

 ______________________________

I hesitate to pre-order Tonner dolls as I would prefer to wait and see the IRL dolls.

Most of you already know that there are many doll dealers who discount off Tonner's retail prices.
Don't pay retail. Find the dealer nearest your location and order from them. Keep the doll dealers in business! Your warranty is in force no matter where you purchase your Tonner doll.
