Wonder Festival 2015 Winter: Misc Garage Kits (part 2)

$

And so, as tradition demands, we end our coverage of the garage kits at wonder festival with our final miscellaneous gallery. And boy, are there some weird things in this one!

Before we begin, I should warn you that some of the kits skirt NSFW territory so you might not want to be looking at some of the kits at work. the more striking thing though is how many kits related to food there are, from the carrot men to a witch with pasta flying around her. We also get an original optimus prime which i *think* might be based off his powermaster version seen in transformers: Masterforce but I can't be certain. There's also a kit of guyver 1 but this was based off the designs from the american live action movies rather than the original japanese manga or anime adaptations.

We also got a few super Soniko kits including one of her riding a bomb a-la Dr Strangelove. That should be getting a PVC release sometime in the near future.

But if you want really weird... check out the camel... gun. It seems to be a stab at ISIS but I have no idea about the story behind it. If anyone would like to enlighten us, please do.

...So weird!

That's it for our garage kit coverage for this winter wonder festival. As I said when we started, the overall quality of the kits on display and the quantity of new works was rather lacking this time. Still, there were a few good kits still here and there and hopefully, we'll get a stronger showing at the Summer wonder festival!

Toy Fair 2015: Square Enix's VPAK Thor and Spider-Man

Square Enix tweeted several images of the Marvel Variant Play Arts Kai figures on display at its booth, a selection which notably included Thor and the Spider-Man which we saw in an illustration at last year's NY Toy Fair.

Unfortunately, the images are really dark which means we don't get a great look at Spider-Man. However, enough of Thor is visible to see that not only does he look good, but the design chosen by SE is... well, surprisingly conventional. The company gave Spidey an armored look and opted for a somewhat different color deco on Iron Man (besides giving him a crystal arc reactor), but Thor seems fairly in-line with other appearances. I wonder if Square Enix ran out of unnecessary flourishes?

That aside, Thor looks pretty cool. His massive arms look a bit more buff than other incarnations, the greaves are stylish, and the rest of the armor also looks good.

From what I can see of Spider-Man, he seems to have come out okay. The figure seems to come with some webbing accessories that snap onto his wrists along with a black-deco'd web shield (sure, it matches his outfit, but it doesn't match the rest of his webbing). Hopefully we'll see some better shots of him soon. If not, Tomopop will have one of its photographers at Toy Fair on Monday and *hopefully* we'll receive some great images then.

See the full images in the gallery.

This Fantastic Steiff Bully Dog is Even Cuter Than Cupid!

Given that today is Valentine's Day, how about a very special Steiff surprise - one that's even more irresistible than candy hearts or cards!  Check out this little Steiff dog that's cuter than Cupid, and has more longevity than any floral bouquet!  Steiffgal is certain you'll be saying "Let me call you sweetheart" once you lay eyes on this real head-turner.

This precious Prince Charming is Steiff's "Bully." He measures 15 cm from the top of his head to his feet. Bully has great and unusual black striping all over his head and back - almost like those of a tiger or cat. His face is detailed with large, felt lined floppy ears; round, a shiny glass nose and eyes; and a prominent, felt lined open mouth. He also has a special feature - he's a tail moves head model! As such, a gentle twist of his tail enables his head to turn in a complete circle.  Bully's crown and collar are made by Steiff but not original to him; his nose is also a replacement and probably a little proportionally small for his size and statue.

Tail turns head Bully was made in 11, 15, 18, 23, 26, and 31 cm from 1931 through 1935 overall.  The smaller versions (like this one under discussion today) had glass noses while the larger ones had embroidered ones; it also appears that the 11 cm version had a closed mouth.

It is interesting to note that this exact design was only produced in this tail turns head version.  As far as Steiffgal can tell, no static or standing versions, or other novelties with his exact coloring and facial detailing and expression, were created on a commercial scale.  It is unusual for Steiff to create such distinctive "one offs" in their product design and development efforts.  It is also unusual that this design was produced as a tail moves head item.  This is so because for the most part,  other tail moves head items from the same time period - including cats, dogs, rabbits, and lambs - were based extremely popular and well known patterns in the Steiff line.

Tail turns head Bully appears to be a variation of Steiff's beloved standard line Bully Bulldog, who was introduced a few years earlier, in 1927.   Bully was modeled on the French Bulldog—the “it” companion of those in the know all across Europe at the time.  Tail moves head Bully and the standard line sitting Bully have structural similarities, especially in their rear areas.  These include the size and proportions of their backsides and hindquarters, the curve of their paws, the placement and size of their tails, and some basic back seams.  (You can see these similarities in the picture on the left; for reference the black and white standard sitting Bully is "officially" the 17 cm version but measures 16 cm while the tail turns head Bully measures 15 cm.)

The big differences between these two models, both structurally and aesthetically, are more towards the front ends of the examples.  From the structural perspectives, tail turns head Bully has a relatively smaller head, proportionally shorter front legs, and longer torso than does regular Bully.  His chest seam comes to a "V" mid torso; on regular Bully this same seam comes to a "V" right under his neck. Tail moves head Bully also has a much longer, narrower neck area than does regular Bully.  These structural modifications were most likely made to accommodate the embedded head turning mechanism and its resultant movement.   And from the aesthetic perspectives, this tail moves head Bully has floppy ears, black glass eyes and nose, and a smiling, open felt lined mouth.  Regular Bully dogs have wire lined ears; oversized black and brown glass pupil eyes; a black hand embroidered nose; and an endearing velvet muzzle.

Steiffgal hopes this discussion on Steiff's unusual tail turns head Bully dog has been a real Valentine's Day treat for you!

Wonder Festival 2015 Winter: Broccoli

$

Broccoli doesn't exactly have a banner year of super-popular characters on their slate (save for one), but it's not like they care. In the gallery, you'll see their bread-and-butter. Emphasis on the butt(er).

Their 1/8 scale line of PVC adds characters from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Tenshin Ranman: Lucky or Unlucky!? and Z/X Zillions of enemy X. Luxuria from Z/X has a cool look, tons of sculpted fabric flowing all over the place; the "lust" aspect is vivid here. Sana Chitose (Tenshin Ranman) is living the gimmick of adult visual novel, so her fans shouldn't be let down. Is that bottle of water for her...or for us?

YuriYuru tease cards for Broccoli's chibi line (Chocolate), show the four main characters of the franchise. I believe the K-On girls Chocolto figures are all coming in August, so expect a similar release pattern for these figures. Date A Live's Kotori Itsuka is coming soon, in her Astral dress form. Sort of like Saint Seiya's Cloths... but they're dresses. That's higher fashion than those pretty boys could ever get.

The big character shown at Broccoli's presentation was Sword Art Online's Asuna. From the silhouette, I wouldn't bank on a heroic action stance; it's more likely this will be the "kawaii" pose to convince you she deserves your "waifu" status.  Shiba Miyuki of The Irregular in Magic High School was also shown unpainted, in a finely sculpted Ric Flair moment. Oh check it, Rail Wars! gets a figure. Aoi Sakurai (the selling point of the series) will be chugging along the production line, though for now you just get a cute picture. Hopefully there isn't a train coming the other direction.

Hit the gallery for these, plus final painted prototypes of figures seeing release in the next couple of months including: High School DxD, DRACU-RIOT, Amairo Islenauts.
