WEEKLY COMICS PULL LIST FOR 2-4-2015

This week is pretty bananas and filled with some great stuff. Here’s a few books worth reading…

HAWKEYE # 21
WORDS: MATT FRACTION
ART: DAVID AJA

After a nearly four-month hiatus, Hawkeye is back on shelves! Sadly, this is the second-to-last issue from Fraction and Aja’s phenomenal run. The issue is bittersweet, features some of the best artwork that Aja has lent to the series (which is saying a LOT), and makes me want to start a band called The Battle of Bed-Stuy. Just read this issue and you’ll understand.

THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL-GIRL #2
WORDS: RYAN NORTH
ART: ERICA HENDERSON

If you haven’t watched my video review of The Unbeatable Squirrel-Girl #1, go do that. This issue remains just as unapologetically goofy in the best way possible. Aside from some LOL-worthy jokes, this issue rules because we get to see Squirrel Girl in Iron Man armor complete with armored Squirrel Tail! Also, for some reason I hear Squirrel Girl’s voice as Fiona from Adventure Time. Surely I’m not the only one.

SAGA #25
WORDS: BRIAN K. VAUGHAN
ART: FIONA STAPLES

This is one of the greatest ongoing book on shelves right now. This issue is a bit toned down in the Violence and Shock department, but it definitely sets the stage for the new path that the characters are on. I might be wrong, but I think this is the first time we get a flashback to any pre-war goings-on, so that’s neat. Even neater are the badass new characters that show up. Oh, and there’s a sidequest for dragon jizz in this issue, so yeah.

Seriously, even if you don’t like comics, you should be reading this. Stop being a jerk and read it already!

ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN #3
WORDS: KIERON GILLEN & MARGUERITE BENNETT
ART: PHIL JIMENEZ & STEPHANIE HANS

This book is pretty fun, but not great. I guess I keep reading it because the artwork and coloring by Romula Fajardo are freaking amazing. It’s just weird because each issue has a main story written by Kieron Gillen and Drawn by Phil Jimenez, but then there’s a flashback written and drawn by other peeps. I usually forget what happened in an issue immediately after I finish reading it. I can’t tell if that’s the story’s fault, or if I’m too distracted by the bodacious art.

Angela gets a ballin’ new armor upgrade and sick pair of wings in this issue. We also learn some stuff about her sidekick friend who I now love because she gives Starlord an 80’s mixtape.

BLACK VORTEX: ALPHA #1
WORDS: SAM HUMPHRIES
ART: ED MCGUINNESS & KRIS ANKA

This kicks off the all new X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy crossover event and it’s off to a pretty good start. The main premise is about a mirror thingy called the Black Vortex that seems to transform/enhance anyone who steps through it. The main selling point for me is getting to see the Guardians on game night playing Grottos & Goblins (a Dungeons & Dragons ripoff that I totally wish was real) with Rocket as the Game Master and Drax just wanting to kill everybody.

The only bummer is how this event is spread across different books instead of being its own thing like Black Vortex #1 through #8 or whatever. To find out what happens after this issue, you’ll need to read Guardians of the Galaxy #24 followed by a buttload of different Marvel titles through April until it all winds down with Black Vortex: Omega #1. Because of this, it was super difficult for the dude at my local comic shop to figure out how to add everything related to this event to my pull list, but he pulled it off. (Thanks, Bob!)

STAR WARS #2
WORDS: JASON AARON
ART: JOHN CASSADAY

This one isn’t pictured because my local comic shop slacks sometimes. Such is life. I’ll be picking up a copy later in the week and report back. In the meantime, check out my review of Star Wars #1.

I told you this week was bananas! One book that I really want to get into is Lady Killer from Dark Horse, but my LCS is out of #1 and I’m super anal about reading crap out of order. But enough about me - what about YOU!? Let me know what you’re reading down in the comments.

Movieland Drive-In Theater

I have fond childhood memories of enjoying drive-in movies in the back of the family station wagon - thus, the Movieland Drive-In Theater playset has great appeal for me. Released in 1959, it was one of the earliest toys released by New Jersey-based Remco Industries
