It's The Best Of All Worlds With This Vintage Steiff Bear Doll

Who deserves a standing ovation? Why, this precious Steiff Puppbaer or Doll bear, of course! Steiffgal admits to having a huge plush crush on this bitty boy, a recent addition to her Teddy hug. Not only is he totally adorable, he also has a bit of a mystery to him. But more on that later. Let's first take a look and see what makes him so interesting from the design and historical perspectives.

This Teddy Baby doll is truly the best of all worlds. He has the head of the beloved Steiff Teddy baby design, the body of a doll, and a charming, well fitting outfit made from period fabrics. He stands about 22 cm tall, is head jointed, and has dangling arms. His head, hands, and the tops of his flat feet are made from light yellow woolen plush. His body and limbs are made from a flesh colored fabric with a somewhat velvety finish. His face is detailed with brown and black glass pupil eyes, a brown hand embroidered nose, and a smiling, tan felt lined mouth. He wears green trousers and a red and white calico shirt - which are original to him - and a tiny old fashioned brass basketball charm around his neck, which is not. Overall, this model was made in 14, 22, and 28 cm from 1931 through 1943.

It is interesting to note that over his production period, Steiff's Teddy Baby doll was dressed in about 11 various outfits.  This particular example is in outfit #8, which is documented simply as, "green trousers, red blouse." Outfit #8 was manufactured from 1935 through 1942.

Although Steiff produced dressed animals, especially monkeys, bears, and rabbits, since the turn of last century, it was not until the late 1920's that the company produced a true animal doll such as the Teddy Baby under discussion here. In 1929, Steiff introduced a Pupp-Bully, Charly, and Treff. All were 28 cm and only remained in the line through 1930. Between 1931 and 1932, Steiff debuted a number of animal dolls, including a cat (pictured here on the left), duck, pug dog, and a boy and girl rabbit couple. And like the Teddy Baby doll, all were made in 14, 22, and 28 cm and appeared in a number of different outfits over time. In the mid to late 1930’s, Steiff would go on to produced a delightful series of additional pupp-animals including an elephant doll, Waldi the Dachshund as a hunter, Scotty the Terrier as a Scotsman, and Arco the German Shepherd as a farmer. However, due to supply restrictions and geopolitical realities, production on all of these doll models ceased by 1943.

Once the factory reopened for toy production at the end of WWII, Steiff briefly resumed their manufacturing of their “pupp-animals.” In 1949, a pair of fully dressed, 25 cm wool-plush Teddy Baby dolls appeared in the line; these were quickly followed with the introduction of a pair of 25 cm blond and brown mohair dressed Teddy Baby dolls in the early and mid 1950’s. Steiff continued the production of their pre-war pair of boy-girl rabbit dolls but renamed the set Hansili in 1954. They also extended this doll animal line to include two additional models of rabbit pairs, a Dachshund doll boy and girl set (pictured here on the left), and a fox doll boy and girl set. Overall, all of these sets were discontinued by the early 1960s, probably due to their highly detailed, labor-intensive and costly production requirements.

Ok, so perhaps you are wondering by now what is so mysterious about this little Teddy Baby doll. When Steiffgal was doing a close inspection on him, she noticed something entirely unexpected. He has a US Zone tag sewn into his leg seam. But that would suggest a production date in the c. 1947 to 1953 time frame. So what's going on here? Only Teddy knows for sure, but here are a two scenarios:
  1. It is entirely possible that he was produced in the late 1930's or early 1940's, put in storage during the war, pulled out after the war, labeled, and sold in the late 1940's to early 1950's.

  2. It is also entirely possible that he was indeed made as part of the early post war production. As noted above, the literature documents that Steiff did produce a 25 cm wool plush Teddy Baby doll from 1949 through 1950. Perhaps Steiff also made a few of them in 22 cm at the time as well.
Either way, given the US Zone tag, Steiffgal is all but certain he did not leave Giengen until at least 1947, and that his "birthdate" is somewhere in the 1935 to 1950 time frame. Unfortunately, Ted's primary IDs have been lost to time. However, given his documentation and look and feel, Steiffgal suspects that originally he had either a short trailing F button, a blank button, or a raised script button.

Steiffgal hopes that this discussion on this precious Steiff Teddy Baby Doll has been as enjoyable as child's play for you!

[Updated] Is Hasbro looking to buy DreamWorks Animation?

$

[Update: Hasbro has called off their talks to purchase DreamWorks Animation and for two reasons. First off when their intentions were revealed Hasbro's stock dropped 5%, not good since they were planning to use stocks to help fund the purchase. Another problem came from Disney's disapproval of Hasbro buying one of their closest animation competitors. Hasbro produces several figure lines for Disney including Star Wars, Marvel, and now Frozen so buying Dreamworks would have lead to a major conflict of interest. Seems for now Hasbro is focusing more on what remains of their partnership with Discovery, their CakeMix Studios productions, and newly formed Allspark Pictures.]

Once again Hasbro is in the news for something not directly related to figures. According to the New York Times' Dealbook Hasbro is now in advance talks to purchase DreamWorks Animation. It's only been a few weeks since Hasbro and Discovery ended their partnership with Discovery to produce the Hub Netowork, but Hasbro hasn't wasted any time moving on to bigger things. If Hasbro were to purchase DreamWorks Animation (not to be confused with former parent company DreamWorks Studios) not only would they gain a new animation studio to handle things like Transformers and My Little Pony projects, they'd also gain ownership of properties like Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon.

Dealbook suggests that Hasbro is trying to model itself after LEGO and the way that company went from a modest toy company to an entertainment force through its video games and recent movie. I'd say Hasbro has already done well with their own model of using live action movies to gain success, but they've been lacking a major animated feature film for a while. Back over the summer Hasbro posted How to Ride Your Dinobot shorts online which has me wondering just how long these talks have been going on.

It wasn't that long ago that the rumor was circulating that Disney was looking to buy Hasbro (which ended up being false), but now it's Hasbro looking to buy a  movie studio. Of course the deal is far from final and there's still a chance of it falling through. Dealbook has more details at the link above. I'm definitely supportive of this deal as it benefits both companies greatly, especially with more Dragon and Kung Fu Panda movies on the way perfect for selling figures.

Hasbro shows off Transformers: Combiner Wars figures in package

We're getting a little closer to the launch of the 2015 Transformers: Combiner Wars line with the first look at the finished figures in an all-new package style. These photos are of the international packaging and are a little different from the North American packages which will continue to include full-size comics with Deluxe class figures. Unlike the 2014 figures, all figures in every class of the 2015 line will now include a collectible game card. Worth pointing out that the art on the package isn't the same art as on the card which excites me more than it probably should. Of course the package art on the North American releases will double as the comic cover. The new packaging replaces the previous scheme's white layout with a black one which gives the new series a much darker and grittier look. This is some high quality package design and I'm so glad they dropped the weird stuff like unusual shaped boxes and lots of windows.

As far as the figure go this is going to be a very fun line to collect and probably dominate most of my collecting in 2015. The photos are of finished figures, unlike the hand-painted prototypes we've seen previously. Some have lost minor details, but for the most part they've only had their colors altered slightly. Optimus Prime is a little brighter looking, but he actually looks better than the prototype images. One of the biggest issues people have with this set is that, aside from not containing a complete team of characters, is that they chose only figures that don't hide the giant connecting piece in their chests. Some of the other figures have parts that cover it up, but unfortunately these aren't them. Oh, and if you were wondering about Alpha Bravo, he's finally been introduced as a new character in the comics and wasn't made as a way for Hasbro to save money by using the mold later for Vortex rather than make another jet. Nope, not at all...

Supposedly these will start coming out as soon as December which is great, but also kinda sucks because typically the stuff coming out at the turn of the New Year doesn't find its way into stores thanks to warehouses dumping older stuff on stores during this period. Keep watching that internet.

One last related thing: there are strong rumors going around that suggest a Devistator/Constructicon box set is coming. Some rumors say it'll be a Toys R Us exclusive. Some rumors say it'll be comprised of six Voyager class figures and sold as Titan class. Some rumors say it'll be six Deluxe figures. Some rumors say it'll be US$150. Just remember that it's all a rumor until we see pictures or hear something official from Hasbro.

Snow Miku Snow Bell ver. is cute. Like, beyond belief adorably cute. Way too cute to be left as just a single figure so Good Smile Company and Max Factory are spreading the love. 2015 will be the first year were a new Snow Miku design will be used for both a new Nedoroid and a new figma! Ah, they're so great, and I'm glad we're finally getting a figma that isn't just a repaint of another Miku. Both figures will also be accompanied by their own little Yukine bunny figure.

Details are pretty light at the moment, though I'm sure we won't have to wait too long before we see and learn more about these figures. Of course they'll be available at Wonder Festival 2015 (Winter) on February 8 when we'll all have the opportunity to place an order online! As a special treat they're also adding Snow Bell Miku to the Hatsune Miku Project Diva arcade game.
