Our Richard Petty NASCAR Driving Experience – Las Vegas
We made a trip to Las Vegas this past month to check out the ABC Kids Expo. Living now in Southern California the drive is very short, similar from driving from Portland, OR to Seattle, WA. So we now have Nevada and Arizona as our quick getaway destinations, and lucky for us they have so… [read more]

Behind The Scenes Of The October, 2014 Teddy Dorado Steiff Auction Event
Steiffgal: Of all the delightful items coming up for auction, which ones would you most like to add to your own collection?
Carsten Esser: I have collected Steiff since I was a young boy, and have forever loved the company's very small dogs. They have always seemed to have such fantastic craftsmanship, and even today I wonder how it is possible to bring excelsior and plush to life in such a magical way. The upcoming Teddy Dorado Auction features some minty mint doggies from the 1950s; this of course brings me great pleasure - and hopefully the same to Steiff dog collectors from all over the world. A wonderful example is lot 13-1204, a 10 cm St. Bernard dog from 1953-1955 in pristine condition; he is pictured here on the left.
However, when I founded Teddy Dorado four years ago, I made the very difficult decision not to actively collect Steiff anymore. I did so because I felt that if I continued to build my collection, I could not be a fair agent between those who would like to buy and/or sell fine Steiff treasures. So this fabulous example will have to find a new home that is not with me and my family. But I am certain that this will not be a problem!
Steiffgal: Although you have handled Steiff for many years, and are very familiar with the company's products from the very beginning, are there any items in the upcoming auction that were new to you?
Steiffgal: Your printed catalogs are so professionally done, well illustrated, and most informative. But how do you decide what appears on the cover? Is it the age of the items, or the lot numbers, or values, or something else?
Carsten Esser: We try to have the items on our catalog covers to be representative of the entire auction, as well as highlight some very special pieces, too. We choose items which are the "celebrities" of an auction (like Black Jack, the 1912 black bear who appeared on our summer, 2014 catalog cover and hammered for 15,000 €), items in extremely good or like new condition, very unusual treasures (like the White Teddy Girl on a mohair cushion who also appeared on our summer, 2014 catalog cover and hammered for 8,000 €), highly valued items, and things that go together nicely, like "couples." Our current cover features two such pairs: two small Teddy bears (lots 13-7001 and 13-7002) and a Fluffy cat and Rattler dog who have been together for many, many decades. They all came to us from the same private estate. If you check out our fall, 2014 catalog cover, you'd have to agree that they look great together! (Cover pets Fluffy and Rattler are pictured here on the left.)
Steiffgal: Carsten, as always, thank you so much for your time, and sharing some of your behind the scenes auction secrets with the Steifflife readers today!

Get a first glimpse of the Macross F Dollfie Dream Collaboration!
Well, that didn't take long! It was only a week ago when the Macross F X Dollfie Dream collaboration was announced (with a basic website with no info made live a few days later) but we've already got a first glimpse of the two dolls at the recently concluded Macross 7: Fire Bomber 2014 Basara Explosion event in Japan!
Volks were also kind enough to post a few official promo pics for us to peruse and all I can say is... not too shabby! Sheryl has always been a difficult design to pin down (you can tell because many of the figures have very different looking face sculpts) but Volks did a pretty good job here, even though she clearly looks like she's based off the DD Alna. Ranka is easier to get right but the pics give her a bit of a dead-eye look.
Both are based off their look on the final battle of the movie Sayonara no Tsubasa with Ranka sporting her "wish of valkyrie" dress while Sheryl is rocking her "shine of Valkyrie" costume. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few other costumes being made available when pre-orders open. Can you imagine a DD Ranka in a "ninjin loves you!" costume?
The bigger news is that the dolls will be made available via limited pre-order, which means no lottery! If you pre-order, then you'll get them (with the caveat of waiting around a year or so for them. That's the way it was for KOS-MOS and Hatsune Miku). Also, pre-orders open on the 22nd November so you know when to get your orders in.
Sadly, we're still waiting on finer details like price and whatnot but I'm sure they'll appear very soon.

Hobby Round 12: Volks shows off their next 1/4 scale kit... finally!
Looks like Volks was a busy bunny this weekend. As well as showing off their new Macross F dollfie dreams, they were also holding their usual biannual Hobby Round event and used the event to finally show off their new 1/4 scale Selvaria Bles in prototype form!
She was announced back in April of last year but this is the first time we've seen her since the initial announcement! As per all of Volks recent kit outputs, she will be a charagumin kit, which means that she will be far more expensive than she needs to be but I don't care! She's definitely on my watch list now! On another note, Isara finally gets a colour finish after being shown off in prototype form at Wonder Festival. I still need to buy her and Alicia...
As for the rest of the show, Volks focused almost exclusively on their Charagumin line with new kits for Super Soniko as well as more characters from Love Live! joining those already released. Girls und Panzer also get a bit of love with a new kit for Kei from the America-like Saunders All girls team and a new Mari kit to compliment Asuka on the Evangelion Q side of things. There was also an announcement of a Rei Ayanami kit in production as well but that's pretty much a given if Asuka and Mari get one each!Miyu Edelfelt from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya also gets to join Illya on display as well.
Oddly enough, there was also a lone picture of the Earth engine impactor from Captain Earth on display as well. Not much detail on that one but could Volks be prepping a plastic kit released for the most memorable part of Captain Earth (which isn't saying much...)?
Are there any items from Volks which have caught your attention? All I know is 2015 just shaped up to be really expensive!!

Matty's Scott Neitlich leaves Matty
Scott "Toy Guru" Neitlich, the de facto face of Matty Collector (not to be confused with the mascot), has announced his resignation from Mattel in a lengthy interview with AFI. Neitlich is announced as leaving his dream job at Mattel for a dream job at an unspecified toy company. (Hey Scott, is there room for one more over there?).
Neitlich worked for Mattel for over nine years and was instrumental in the founding of Mattel's Matty Collector imprint, in addition to having been an influential (and visible) figure in the industry. Although Neitlich has been mum on details pertaining to his new job, he's revealed that he may be functioning in a similar capacity at the new company and will continue to attend conventions, etc, in addition to keeping the name "Toy Guru" (and also the name "Scott Neitlich").
Neitlich has specified that his departure won't change the Masters of the Universe line-up for 2015 (as he was working on 2016 at the time) and says that you can blame him for anything you don't like in 2015. In many ways, this represents the end of an era for Mattel as both the long-running Masters of the Universe line is wrapping up at around the same time as its immensely popular brand manager is leaving. While it's unclear what the future holds for Matty Collector (Neitlich was unsure of who might replace him), this could be something really cool for the toy industry. Will we see another major company run a new fan-centric website? Could a lesser-known company rise to greatness? Will Neitlich make the mistake of working for JazWares? Only time (but mostly Neitlich) can tell.
