New pieces from Max Toy Company emerge

New pieces from Max Toy Company emerge screenshot

Mark Nagata has been busy, but he's still making sure Max Toy Company is working on new stuff. For starters, there's that fellow you see above, Mecha Nekoron! A giant cat robot sculpted by Makino-san of TTToys, this fellow is coming soon and will be 2.5 inches tall. Cat robots? Yes, please!

Also popping up on Mark's Tumblr were shots of his new collaboration with Konatsu, Kaiju King Negora. A larger, more detailed version of the smaller Kaiju Negora, the first run of these were on sale at Konatsunagata, apparently, and sold out, but more colorways are coming in the future. As a bonus, Kaiju King Negora comes with the Ooh Nezumi (Big Mouse or Big Rat) mini figure as a bonus.

Also worth noting was the quick, surprise return of the Max Toy Club. For US$70, you not only get a lifetime membership card, pin and exclusive toy (this month was a glow in the dark Dualos), but you get first crack at some very rare and exclusive pieces in the future! While April's slots sold out, Mark has said he'll try to get something together for May, so stay tuned for that.

Custom Delights: Brian Shapiro's Thark from John Carter screenshot

Dentist by day, Vinylmation customizer by night, Brian Shapiro sent over some pictures of his work in Vinylmation, starting with his latest creation: Thark from John Carter. He even made Thark's spear himself out of wood, ribbon and acrylic denture material. Resourceful!

I asked him for some additional photos of his other creations, and he sent along plenty, including: The Rocketeer, TRONald and Winnie the CLU, Jessica Rabbit, Judge Doom, original character Zom-B, Bar Mitzvah, 9" and 3" combo set based on the Walt and Mickey statue at the Park, Vinny L Mation (Vinylmation Station reporter, two versions) and finally, another Judge Doom but with a saw. That figure actually has removable accessories! He's got the anvil, saw and regular black gloved hand as well as a removeable hat and sunglasses.

Very cool! Check out the images and be sure to give him some props for his awesome custom figures!

Toy Review: Gumdrop

Puppies are undeniably the best thing in the world. And vinyl toys aren’t far behind. So when you put puppies into a boiling pot of molten vinyl, the results can only be amazing. 64 Colors, Squibbles Ink, and Rotofugi combined their powers to form a rainbow of super cute puppies and we’ve got some for you to stare at. Hit the jump for our review of Gumdrop.

The first thing you’ll notice is that these don’t come in a blindbox but in transparent baggies. That means you can pick whichever of the six colors and two faces you’d like to buy. And at $6 each, you can buy quite a few without taking a bite out of your wallet.

The toys are very light and definitely feel hollow, but since they’re supposed to be a mix between a dog [kind of soft] and a gumdrop [totally squishy] that’s fine by me. The hollow head makes it possible to have Gumdrop’s face turned in any direction, too.

The next thing you might notice is probably the biggest flaw with the figures. The dyes used are pretty flat. I wasn’t expecting day-glow colors, but deeper tones would have definitely been better than these pale ones. The red and green colorways are vibrant, but the rest are definitely muted.

One strange habit I have is trying to stack my mini-figures. Dopplegängers, Takochus, Buff Monsters - If they’re remotely stackable, I’ll make an attempt. Gumdrops can be stacked, but it’s a precarious balancing act. It’s pretty darn cute, though. I recommend it.

These 2-inch figures are definitely worth checking out. For $6 a pup, they’re not a major toy investment and will definitely attract attention. They’ll also fit in with other similarly styled toys like Doppelgängers. I just wish their colors were a little more vibrant.

Buy individual Gumdrops or the full set from Rotofugi.
