Funko today unleashed a double double set of reveals (ie, two reveals of two figures): "Distressed" and "24k" copies of Hikari Optimus Prime and Bumblebee (Transformers), all of which are currently up for pre-order.
While most people associate the word "distress" with an emotional state of anxiety or sadness, it's also a term for making an object look older by simulating wear over time. It's an idea that the "Distressed" deco on this figures accomplishes in some senses even if the figures don't look aged (the Battle Ready versions of the characters looked far more like antiques). The "Distressed" Optimus and Bumblebee are limited to 1,000 pieces each, have a US$80 MSRP, and are slated for an October release.
The "24k" versions of Optimus and Bumblebee are not, as one might expect, actual gold-plated versions of the figures. Instead these Books-a-Million exclusives have merely been given a gold paintjob that looks surprisingly good. I'm usually not a fan of gold variants but the choice just seems somewhat natural given that the characters are naturally metallic. These two are somewhat counter-intuitively cheaper than the "Distressed" versions, clocking in at a US$50 MSRP apiece. They're limited to 600 pieces each and are apparently in-stock now.
As always, you can win one of these via Funko's Facebook contest.
