2015 Club Eternia hits subscription goal

In news that shouldn't shock or surprise anybody, Matty Collector has reached its subscription goal for the 2015 Club Eternia. The company had previously cast doubt on the club's continuation in the annual "Fear Drive" (I'm actually getting a little weepy-eyed knowing that this was the last time Matty will be pulling this stunt), but apparently fans' wallets came through the club.

The company goes on to thank its fans as well as several fan sites although it once again conveniently overlooks poor Tomopop (C'mon, Matty, don't all the things we've done for and to you over the years count for anything?). Sour grapes aside, the important thing is that Club Eternia will have a proper send-off and, more importantly, I'll be able to pick up a Mara figure.

Nintendo says no to Shapeways while Hasbro says go for it

Shapeways can't catch a break, or maybe it can? Shapeways has a tendency to be a bit controversial, what with its place as a 3D printing hub making use of user-created 3D renders, many of which are based on licensed characters. Recently Nintendo pulled the plug on a Pokemon Bulbasaur ceramic planter via a cease and desist order through Pokemon International. Creator Claudia Ng says that the order asks for all money made from the planters, which were sold for US$49 each under the name 'Succulent Monster', be turned over. The 3D data had been still available on Thingiverse, but has since been taken down as well, though two low-poly versions are still available

Meanwhile, Hasbro is fully embracing use of the service and giving fans the freedom to make whatever they want with (and for) their characters. Hasbro originally tested the waters by allowing My Little Pony designs to be used on Shapeways through a joint service at SuperFanArt.com. Then after a recent meeting at Maker Faire the two companies happily expanded the service to a list of Hasbro products including figures like Transformers and G.I. Joe and board games like Scrabble and Monopoly. What I love about this is that Hasbro is encouraging creative fans to make money off of Hasbro's properties with a larger portion of the profits going to the creator than Hasbro. To quote an interview with Shapeways’ co-founder and CEO Peter Weijmarshausen on Makezine.com, "Hasbro has the attitude to enable rather than disable". Excellent!

So what do you think, is Nintendo going overboard by protecting their properties and alienating their creative fans when they should be taking a stance more like Hasbro's? Or should Nintendo be protecting their properties with every fiber of their corporate being, fans be damned? My stance is pretty obvious, but what's yours?

A Perfect Decoration For Multi Seasons and Multi Holidays

$

My mother always loved to decorate for the various holidays and various seasons and loved decorating her home with handmade decorations either she had made or were made for her by her children.   So, when my mother down sized and moved into a senior citizen apartment many years ago she didn't have a lot of room for her seasonal and holiday decorations.  She ended up giving some of her cherished decorations away.  She just didn't have the room to store or display them.

In thinking about this over the years and thinking about my own need to down size a little on my decorations I thought about handmade decorations that could be left out for several holidays and several seasons.  For me that would mean something I could bring out in September and leave out until March.  But, what kind of form would be conducive to that?

Well, after experimenting with the mixed media art dolls I had learned to make in my latest Artful Gathering class and thinking about multi level wood blocks a light bulb went off in my head.  The multi level wood blocks would be perfect for a multi seasonal multi holiday mixed media collage decoration that could be left out for many months.

Since the Fall, Christmas, and Winter seasons are my favorite times of the year I thought my blocks should have a Fall side,  a Christmas side, a Winter side, and a Halloween side.  And, best of all, they could be left out for 7 months.  All you'd have to do was turn the block for the season or holiday you wanted.

For the graphics I decided to mainly use some of my own doll graphics that I had created for my custom fabric lines.  However, I didn't have quite enough so I added some free graphics from The Graphics Fairy, free graphics from The Vintage Moth, free graphics from Antique Clipart, some Victorian graphics from "A Victorian Lady's Scrapbook" Dover Pictorial Archive paperback CD-ROM that I bought from Amazon, and some Victorian graphics in the public domain.

I ended up creating two 9" x 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" 3-tier mixed media collage art block towers with  a Fall side,  a Christmas side, a Winter side, and a Halloween side and two 4 1/2" x 2" x 2" mixed media mini art lock towers with a Fall side,  a Christmas side, a Winter side, and a Halloween side.

I also had some other solid wood blocks that were  6" x 2" x 2" and 5 1/4" x 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" wood blocks that I made into mixed media collage art blocks with a Christmas side, a Winter side, and a Halloween side.

I also had two solid wood rectangles that were 4 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 1 1/4" that I made into mixed media collage art rectangles with 3 Christmas sides and one Halloween side.

I also made two 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 2" mixed media collage artist trading cards (i.e. ATC's) with a Halloween side and Christmas side.

I was pleased with the way all the art blocks turned out and decided to try my hand at some bigger blocks so stay tuned - there will be more.

True Cast's Walking Dud gets a PVC version

Last year for New York Comic Con, True Cast Studio brought along Walking Dud, a rubber zombie figure. You won't have to wait that long for the new PVC version, though: it'll be available on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m. Central (9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific).

It's also worth noting that these have been produced at Onell Design's factory in China, and additionally, will have Glyos System-style articulation (and presumably, would have Glyos-compliant parts). Looks like all the detail from the rubber figures is here, too!

Two colorways will be available: a Pheyden blue unpainted version for US$8, and an Ultra Rotten painted version for US$15. If you'd like an Ultra Rotten in clamshell packaging, though, they're offering those, too, for US$20 each.

Takara's Hisashi Yuki has posted images of Masterpiece Star Saber's Brain of Courage to Twitter, and it's pretty small! It's shown next to the original version, as well as next to Diaclone pilot figures (which for reference are about 1" tall, or the right size to fit in all those empty seats on your G1 Transformers). It's also compared to one of those figures in the seat on Super Fire Convoy/RID Optimus Prime! Keep reading to see all the tininess for yourself!
