Around the house: Recycled Limb Planters

My house is full of weird bits and treasures...old toys, sea shells, broken machines and mini collections of random odds and ends.  I thought I'd start sharing some of those with you, my dear Cotton Monster fans, incase you'd like a glimpse!

The past few years my mom and I have been tackling her attic, making space and donating things that were stuffed up there long ago, because, let's face it...letting go is hard, and you never know when you might need this or that. A lot of times, for better or worse, I end up with a trunk full of things to take home with me. A couple years ago we uncovered some big zip-lock bags of barbies. Most had their hair cut off.  Some were missing heads.  On a mission to liberate their better parts from those weird alien torsos and permanently made-up faces (those that still had them), i dutifully did what seemed obvious and went about dismembering them further, ripping off legs and arms, averting my eyes and cutting them off with big wire cutters when necessary.

I shoved those limbs into the dirt of planters and pots with succulents, cacti, aloe or whatever other spidery plants I already had around, they instantly gained a whole new personality (granted, the legs make for a bit more scandalous display)...
I love them.

Make your own:
1. Find your childhood Barbies or take some from a kid
(and buy that kid a Cotton Monster to replace them)
2. Rip off the legs and arms (or carefully cut off with big wire cutters)
3. Stick 'em in your plants
4. Smile every time you see them

TFCC adds Nova Prime and Marissa Faireborn/Afterburner to 2015 club store

The official Transformers Collectors' Club has announced two new figures that will be in the club store in 2015. The first is Nova Prime, a repaint of the remolded Lio Convoy that will be given to active club members next year. Nova Prime is one of the Primes that came before Optimus Prime and would eventually fall from grace to become the evil Nemesis Prime. TFCC released a Nemesis Prime in their first Subscription service (in the style of Robots in Disguise's Scourge) so this will be a fitting companion figure. It is a little unfortunate, however, that they're using the same mold as two TFCC exclusives at the same time rather than saving one for BotCon like they did with the 2014 Rampage (TFCC) and Shokaract (BotCon). Think I would have rather seen Generations Dreadwing repainted into Beast Wars II's BB to go with the Lio Convoy theme, but whatever, it's a nice looking figure.

Second store exclusive is a surprise G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover set featuring Earth Defense Command's Marissa Faireborn and Autobot Technobot Afterburner. Marissa made regular cameos in the later G1 Transformers cartoon episodes and hardcore fans might recall that she is the daughter of none other than G.I Joes Flint and Lady Jaye making this an all the more fitting figure. The figure was mashed together from parts from various Scarlet, Cover Girl, and Baroness figures to make a for a convincing likeness. She comes with jet pack and null-ray as a call back to the episode Five Faces of Darkness. She's partnered with a non-transforming Afterburner motorcycle repainted from a Cobra Wheel Blaster Bike meant to represent her teaming up with the Technobots in the episode Money is Everything. Considering the nature of the figure I'm curious to see if this will also be made available in the G.I. Joe Collectors' Club store as well.

Not bad as TFCC exclusives go, but not exactly exciting either. I like the idea of Marissa as a club exclusive, but I wish she came with a transforming partner. Still, TFCC doesn't give us multiple store exclusives that often anymore so the extra effort is appreciated. Keep in mind that all of these images are digitally painted so the final product will likely vary.

Japan sends a Kitty into space

There's a long tradition of space agencies around the world sending animals into space, for better or worse. But this might be a first. Reuters is reporting that a tiny, 4 cm tall Hello Kitty figure is riding along on the recently launched Hodoyoshi-3 satellite. The small, about garbage can sized craft was produced by Japanese developers as part of a US$40 million program to get private companies interested in space and satellites. Fittingly for the Japanese cultural ambassador, Hello Kitty's parent Sanrio was chosen as the first company to partner with the University of Tokyo's Nano-Satellite Center in hopes it would get Kitty's fans interested in satellites.

The figure itself was custom made for the voyage. The plastic figure placed next to the craft's window had to be specially painted to protect it from UV rays, gamma rays, and not to mention the vacuum of space itself. The team working on the project spent two months positioning the craft just right so that Earth could be seen from inside. I wonder if it was worth it all just to get this shot?
