Mondo enters the collectibles realm with some old favorites

The name Mondo might not hop out at you, but if you're a movie buff like the folks at our sibling site Flixist, then you might know their parent company, Alamo Drafthouse. Mondo is the T-shirt-and-art-print-producing arm of Alamo Drafthouse ... at least they used to be, because now they're also branching out into collectibles with an impressive announcement of new figures at San Diego Comic Con.

Think I'm being a bit hyperbolic? That Iron Giant figure you see above is one of their four announcements, and Jeremy's already penciled it in as his July DO WANT. Joining the Iron Giant will be a Lil' Mikey, based on a Mike Mitchell illustration and featuring everyone's favorite partying Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (he even has the Turtles ice cream bar!); a 1/6-scale Alfred Hitchcock figure; and a 6-inch figure based on the original Kevin Eastman Ninja Turtle drawing that grew into TMNT.

We'll be getting pre-order and pricing info later, but expect to see us stop by Mondo's booth (#835) and get as much info on these four figures as we can!

Hasbro takes the Millennium Falcon out for another run

$

Back in the late '70s and part of the '80s Kenner created a (kinda small) Millennium Falcon vehicle-playset for their then pioneering 3.75 inch Star Wars line. It wasn't bad and found new life in the mid '90s when Star Wars saw a new serge in popularity thanks to a digital remastering and new figures were made by Kenner. Of course it was also around this time that Hasbro bought Kenner and the Star Wars license defaulted to them. This modern run of figures has been going strong non-stop for nearly 20 years now and Hasbro was nice enough to update some of the key vehicles. Of course that included a giant 2008 Millennium Falcon that was finally in scale with the figures.

Six years later Hasbro is back again with yet another Millennium Falcon that will be exclusive to Walmart soon. The new one appears to be a little smaller than the previous, boasting a length of just over two feet while the previous version was measured at over 2.5 feet. It's all marketing buzz so there's no telling if there's really that much difference in the size. The new version also seems to be lacking the lights, sounds, and audio phrases from the 2008 release as well. Plus were the previous version came with Han and Chewie figures this one seems to be lacking any included figures. On the bright side the new version may end up being quite a bit cheaper considering all it lacks.

If you just want a nice display piece this might be a good deal you. I mean, how many times are you going to flip on the lights and sounds and do you really need another Han figure? Hopefully we'll have more details this coming weekend at San Diego Comic Con to share. In the meantime: Am I the only one a little disturbed by the Disney logo at the top of the box?

Evilos' custom Doctor Who Vashta Nerada figure will keep you out of the shadows

I can't tell you how excited I was to see Evilos' terrifying new custom! Based on lore introduced by the Doctor Who episode Silence in the Library comes this figure of a NASA astronaut infested by the Vashta Nerada. The Vashta Nerada are like an alien insect swarm that dwells in shadows, devours flesh, and can animate the corpses of their victims. For me they're one of the most frightening alien species the Doctor has ever come across, even when compared to Weeping Angels and approximations for Satan himself.

And this is one heck of a cool representation! Measuring in at 1/6 scale the figure features a full NASA astronaut uniform with helmet, skeletal head sculpt, and an LED black light for an exceptionally eerie glow. It also has a nice looking base with glass dome and metal name plate that bumps up the total height to 14 inches. Evilos has this up on ebay for a mere US$499.99, an exceptional price for a custom of this quality.

If you're any kinda of Doctor Who fan you really should make the time to watch the episode that inspired this figure. And if you're not a fan, well, watch it anyway and see if you become a convert.

Also be sure to follow the jump to read the story behind this figure!
