HOT CHICKS AND MOVIES IN FLORESCENT 8-BIT

Another Castle is one of many unfinished projects I’ve had on the backburner. It first started about five or six years ago. The idea was to take original photos of girls in cosplay or cool outfits or whatever, turn it into pixel art with crazy colors to make it look like 8-bit graffiti or something, and then plop it on limited edition t-shirts.

The diamond logo was meant to be reminiscent of video games like Sonic or Final Fantasy where you have to collect different colored gems and crystals, but then Diamond Supply Co. became huge and I didn’t wan’t people to think I was jacking their steeze or whatever. I’m prety attached to the logo, but I guess I could just use the weird little castle-looking thingy in between the diamonds as a logo instead. Idunno.

The project never came to fruition because I’m unemployed as beans and rely on freelance video production jobs to pay the bills. Starting a brand. It turns out, starting a brand is pretty impossible without a decent amount of startup money. I thought about taking the idea to Kickstarter or something, but I’m super non-confident about pretty much every idea I come up with and get excited about.

I guess I’m shamelessly posting about it here to see if anyone else would be into it. Let me know by commenting, liking, or reblogging or whatever. We’ll see what happens.

Capcom's Morrigan appears in colour, looks set to disappoint

We had such high hopes for Capcom's new take on Morrigan when she was first announced, and even when shown off as a grey prototype there were reasons to get excited. But now the company has posted up shots of a near-final, painted version and...oh dear.

This just doesn't really look very good at all. The paintjob is flat and uninspired, and does a pretty bad job of emphasising how grotesque those boobs are. Worst of all is the face, which is exposed as flat, creepy and unnatural. A good paintjob can make or break a figure, and in this case it's very much turned me off of what could have been an interesting piece. What do you think readers - am I right, or have I just gone blind(er)?

Get your watering pots out, Nendoroid Kitakami is up for pre-order

Feels like just yesterday, I was writing something or other about Kahotan and her Nendoroid Kitakami preview. Well that's because it was just yesterday. As promised, the pre-order is up.

All of the KanColle Nendoroids have looked great so far, but something about Kitakami stands out to me. Maybe it's her range of expressions. Anyway, she's up on Good Smile Company's online store and other retailers for ¥4,500. If you pre-order from GSC, you'll get special packaging and a water-themed base. Not exactly earth-shattering but it falls in line with GSC's MO of providing pre-order bonuses. Expect an October release.

FREEing's Laura Bodewig is up for pre-order, so hop to it

The thought of a sexy 1/4-scale figure is appealing to me, but in practice very few of them have designs that I like. FREEing will be releasing this 1/4-scale Laura Bodewig this December, and I'm on the fence about it.

Laura's one of the ladies from Infinite Stratos, which I haven't seen. I'm also just not fond of the Playboy bunny look, although I have to admit the character design and expression are pretty cute here. So conflicted!

If you're more decisive than I am, you'll be able to pre-order Laura for ¥18,333. The price actually seems pretty decent for a 1/4-scale figure, but I'm hardly an expert here. She'll be out in December, but you can get a nice preview from Kahotan's blog.

Tokyo Toy Show: First colored pics of MP-22 Ultra Magnus

Takara Tomy is giving us our first colored look at Transformers Masterpiece MP-22 Ultra Magnus at Tokyo Toy Show. Thanks to images from TAG Hobby we can get a clearer look at what parts do what on the new figure. Something that really stands out on the figure, and not necessarily in a good way, is all the red used on his legs. More than likely the red portion will form the bottom of his car carrier mode. It's not as much red as the original G1 figure, but it is a lot more than what was seen in the cartoon that these figures try so hard to imitate.

Otherwise the color use is good, even though this is obviously a hand painted prototype (check out the white patch on the right side of his chest). Some people are complaining about his squat bulky body, but it's likely a combination of his strange pose and the odd angle of the photo. Hopefully some better quality photos will appear soon. My expectations remain high and the new images just add to my eagerness to get my hands on the guy this December!

Plum's Mushibugyo is... different

I don't often see figures from random manga floating around, so it was a nice change of pace when I found out about Plum's Mushibugyo figure. The traditional-looking outfit and muted blue color scheme set her apart from most Japanese figures, although the stripes do make me think of notebook paper.

Akiba Hobby has a big gallery up for Mushibugyo. She's actually not that far off from release (currently scheduled for late July). If you find this little lady appealing, pre-orders are still available from most retailers for ¥12,500.
