Dress Up With Eight Thousand Miles
Stories Of Travel And Tailors
The 'boho-chic' design quotient has been an integral part of my personality. Growing up in India, I've always had a torrid love affair with fabric, especially printed cottons. Spoilt for choice with the many prints, patterns, textures and colours, I spent a lot of my teenage years courting/ cheating on many tailors - debating, arguing, pestering my way through, to sew my sketches into wearable pieces of clothing. Much pleasure was derived back then in donning unique, one-of-a-kind pieces designed by the self, than picking run-of-the-mill 'branded' standard attire from stores.
When I migrated 8000 miles away to my other home, I was utterly dismayed at having to surrender myself to the GAPs, H&M's and the likes (probably the only brands I could afford at the time, as a student in the United States. I found myself subconsciously drifting towards a 'Made in India' garment in the 'pret-a-porter' American apparel society. I missed my 'Masterji's' alright; along with my bright, exuberant cotton fabrics and the ability to go easily from a-sketch-to-a-stitch. Naturally 'fabric-shopping and the subsequent design date with the tailor' topped my 'When-in-Mumbai-to-do...' list for years to come.
On a more geographical note - as if calling two antipodal cities our home for over a decade was not enough, husband and I decided to turn into 'global nomads' within the first year of our parenthood. Armed with 1 baby, over the past 2 years, we have now lived in 3 countries, shuttled through 4 continents, largely lived out of suitcases and seen a lot of the world as we went along. Presently, for the past six odd months or so, we find ourselves based out of Mumbai, again.
So out came the 'When-in-Mumbai-to-do...' list again, given that I'd spent all these years being deprived of tailor tantrums and fabric fetish. My romance with fabric resurged, sparking new design-dates with many tailors once again, albeit this time more so, for sewing apparel for my toddler than for myself. Until recently when I decided to formalize this affair forever and give it a name! And so, somewhere between all that travel and all those tailors my first solo entrepreneurial enterprise titled eight thousand miles...was born!
About Eight Thousand Miles
Eight Thousand Miles... is conceptualized to be a dynamic lifestyle brand - that appeals across the paradigms of cultures, to a broad spectrum of like-minded global nomads who also believe in the idea of a home as a place sans borders.
Our Design Philosophy
We seek to marry the vivacity of the bohemian, colourful aesthetic with the minimalism of an uber-modern, minimal sensibility, thereby aiming to celebrate free-spirited self expression. Our styles being simple silhouettes, our prints are playful making the fabric the focus. Our sense of 'hip' and whimsy reflects itself in our love for fabric - its prints, patterns, colours and textures. We aim to develop an array of lifestyle products, eclectically created and consciously curated for like-minded global aficionados the world over.
How We Work
We promote cross-cultural design exchanges and see tremendous synergy in teaming up with social enterprise - from the sourcing to the production stage. Then whether it be forging alliances with tailoring-units run by NGO’s to enable under-privileged women or commissioning rural artists independently to curate our limited edition styles, there is always a story behind each of our products. And every product purchased, facilitates the economic self-reliance of yet another disadvantaged artisan/ craftsman by putting them right back to work.
We believe in the adaptive re-use and long lives of fabrics, specifically cottons. In some of our products we use recycled/ up-cycled vintage cotton saris or leftover scraps of quality material that is considered industrial waste to give a new avatar to an old piece of clothing.
Where We Are Now
In February 2014 at just 5 weeks into our existence, we soft-launched ourselves in Mumbai to an unexpectedly stupendous response, with our first collection - a children's clothing and bedding line! Since then, we've had two successful event showcases and are presently busy gearing up for our future summer market events, selecting compatible online stores to stock with, building our own online store/ website and planning a summer trunk show/ soft launch in our other home - New York City. All this while continuing to build up our Summer-Spring inventory and conceiving our Fall-Winter collection as well.
Clearly, as you can see, we have more than just eight thousand miles to go before we sleep! Join our journey, as we make the world a smaller place - one mile at a time!

Burn! Burn! Set your figures on fire with Tamashii Effect Impact Burning Flames Red & Blue
Bandai is giving fans even more ways to abuse their figures with the upcoming Tamashii Effect Impact Burning Flames, now available for pre-order. The flames are available in two color versions so if red isn't hot enough for you, you could always give blue a try.
These stand-alone accessories function in a manner similar to Bandai's soon-to-be-released ground pounding/wall knocking Impact Effects where the effects are broken into multiple parts which can be displayed separated or combined for one massively awesome effect. Both flame sets feature a colored translucent plastic and, although they don't look the part in the images, presumably use the same mold.
I'd like to say that it's hard to pick a favorite, but the red flames both look cooler (given the mix of red and yellow) and are more practical as far as effects go. That said, there's definitely a use for the blue as well especially where the S.H. Figuarts Lunatic (reviewed) is concerned.
The Impact Effect Flames are a little pricier than the previous Impact set as they have a US$22 list price and are slated for an August release. Now that the Flame Effects have been scheduled, I suppose it's only a matter of time until the Explosion Effects become available.

""The Pilgrim Lion" is a glow-in-the-dark Mini-Munny custom (inspired partially by The Once & Future Goblin King figure I'm working on). He's a wandering warrior on a quest for his king, taking on long forgotten roads and trails as he dutifully fulfils his mission." -shares JonPaul Kaiser, with photography provided by Justin Allfree.

Images of 'Titanfall Atlas' Prototype from threezero
With the announcement still fresh in our collective minds, Hong Kong's threezero unleashes images of their TITANFALL ATLAS prototype!
Adapted from Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall video game, the final figure will stand approximately 20" (50.8cm) tall, and features articulated joints and fingers, and a cockpit which can be opened. Which means it can and will include the "pilot" for the mecha! Stay tuned for further developments and updates! Meanwhile, I'll let the pics speak for themselves!

Angelic Dreamz Now Closed
Both of these sites are owned and operated by George Gonzalez. I don't know if Couture Dolls will be solely dedicated to selling Integrity Toys' products in the future. I hope not. Hopefully George has plans to grow this site.
One by one the brick and mortar doll shops have shut their doors. Angelic Dreamz was one of the prettiest stores I've ever visited. I wonder if George and Tim will rent it out to some other business.
Complete your O.G. Sailor Scouts by pre-ordering S.H. Figuarts Jupiter
You are now able to fully recreate your syndicated weekday mornings/afternoons thanks to Tamashii Nations. We've seen 3 of the first Senshi released already, with Venus coming up next. Coming this July, you can now add Sailor Jupiter to the list with pre-orders opening today.
As with the other Scouts, you'll be getting a number of accessories. Most notably, you'll be getting an extra tiara antenna part to recreate the Supreme Thunder attack. Also in the package will be the usual assortment of extra faces and hands. As per the antenna part for the attack, she will also come with an alternate hair piece and articulated pony tail.
Retail pricing for Sailor Jupiter is ¥4,200 for Japanese release, but both HLJ and Hobby Search have since stopped accepting new orders with AmiAmi continuing to sell no Sailor Moon Figuarts outside of Japan. J-List does have you covered if you feel you must pre-order it right this moment. Remember that Bluefin will in all likelihood have their own pre-orders for this shortly, so I wouldn't worry that the other retailers currently have stops. In any case, you will be able to bring the Soldier of Thunder home with you.
