#flashbackfriday will see a new weekly serial feature on TOYSREVIL-Fridays, focusing on showcasing art toys from times past, and sometimes with my incessant reminiscence of the good old days of toy collecting (I gave since collapsed #throwbacktoythursday features into this, while focusing on a new direction for Thursdays).

In this "debut" feature, we take a picturesque view at Michael Lau's designs for "Kai" and "Mera", from "Tokyo Tribe 2", circa 2000. The ones shown here today are the variant black-n-white editions (while my colored ones are still in storage up in my toyhoard lol). You saw a glimpse of them in a previous post, now see them in their full unboxed glory!

I liked the print-on-brown carton with cut-thru "handles" (at side of box) and the printed blue tape added that "edge" to somewhat "home treasure box" sort of vibe! Not too keen on the dodgy fonts used tho LOL. The "regular" edition vinyls also had the same box, with no difference in printing or indication (that I know of, anyways). It used to confuse me when I searched for either the standard or variant colors, and I never did do a "marking" on it LOL

This set is based on original characters created by Santa Inoue, with the comics from Jade Dynasty Publications Limited, featuring figures designed by Michael Lau and produced by phase 0.2 (who also produced Eric So's MASKS vinyl figure, which we will look at another feature).

Sticker sheets included in the box had more info printed on them. Also included is a temporary tattoo - one each figure - both of similar designs. This set I received (bought online via Ebay) does not come with the two manga digest (printed by Jade Dynasty), as did the regular edition figure sets.

One thing which I enjoy about Eastern-based released products, there are mostly additional stuff in the package, like stickers or printed items (in this instance there were 2 additional promos slips that could act as "bookmarks"?), unlike additionally slipped in stickers etc- which is nothing wrong with those, but just saying they were part of the package in the first place, IMO. Or at least the impression was such. Quite like CDs/Compact Disc releases, where the package itself had as much attention paid to them, as the album itself, with printed booklets and posters.

Found stacked underneath and within the box (originally might have been one figure per box), were two plastic trays (with plastic cover) holding the collectibles. I remember them being clear-transparent trays when I bought them in 2001, but they've since nice turned a disgusting rusty-yellow! AAAAHHHHHHH *FAINTS*

The vinyl figures itself. Possessing the stylistic designs of "urban vinyl" popular during that era - depicted in products and Eastern comics - a perfect match with Santa Inoue's urban street-gangs-fueled "Tokyo Tribe 2" Seinen manga (and anime). Coupled with the splendid character adaptation from Michael Lau, this is one of the earlier pieces from his work not many people refer to, which is a waste, if you ask me. Or perhaps it was because it was a collabo with Santa and not his own "original" concept?

Featuring basic articulation (to me one of the hallmarks of early day "art toys" too), one special aspect of the duo - in particular "Mera" - had a "removable jacket", which in turn show "stumps" where his arms were supposed to be - the arm-articulation was built-in on the coat itself! *AWESOME*

One aspect of vinyls from that long ago, was the presence of "vinyl sweat", where oily liquid can be seen on the figure's body and even the accessories, but can be simply wiped away with tissue paper, ever so gently…

Regardless, an exceptional slice of "urban vinyl" history, featuring a collaboration between the fan-proclaimed "Godfather of Hong Kong Urban Vinyl" and a manga master depicting the urban street gangs, a sig of the times at the dawn of the new millennium, when "Urban Vinyls" reached it's "height", and was never truly the same again since, IMHO.

    Cheers
    Andy TOYSREVIL

So what happens when Bandai takes the already adorable girls of Persona 4 and makes them extra adorable for their Half-Age Character series? Well, read on to find out!

As the mother of a preschooler with a newly discovered sesame allergy, I am somewhat unfamiliar to the world of epi-pens and the importance of teaching a young child to speak up for themselves in a potentially lethal—but seemingly innocent—situation. Following yesterday's tease with packaged figures, Takara's Hisashi Yuki has posted several photos today of upcoming Takara Generations Mini-Cons and Starscream, showing off both in comparison to their Hasbro counterparts in greater detail. In Starscream's case, we can see for the first time that this toy's deco is realized through paint work nearly as extensive as Takara's Fall of Cybertron Skywarp last year. (but it was worth it!) Things certainly are on the move in the auction world!  And that can only mean good things for Steiff collectors and enthusiasts all from all corners of the Earth!  On Saturday, March 22, 2014, Steiffgal's dear friends at Teddy Dorado are hosting a fantastic auction event in Germany featuring over 300 lots of older, modern, and replica Steiff collectibles - certainly something for everyone!  In order to spring readers to action over this auction, Teddy Dorado was kind enough to send us VIDEOS of some of the finest vintage items in the sale.  So let's take a look at these "moving pictures" and see what makes these highlights so interesting from the collector and historical perspectives - and don't forget to click on the big arrow on the pictures above each description to start the show!

You know spring is truly in the air when you can hear the birds singing their happy warmer weather song!  Here we have a truly fantastic example of Steiff's "Chirp Couple."  This really marvelous item consists of two Steiff woolen miniature birds on a green "seesaw" type of movable platform.  The platform measures about 9 cm tall and 11 cm long.   When the platform is moved up and down, the birds appear to sing and bow to each other.   The bird with the blue head is Steiff's standard line Blue Tit (made in 4 and 8 cm from 1934 through 1943); the bird with the red head is Steiff's Finch (made in 4 and 8 cm from 1933 through 1943).  Both birds are 8 cm and are head jointed.  They are made from Nomotta wool and have brown metal legs and felt beaks and tail feathers.  Remarkably, each retains their crisp and fully legible red ear tag and Steiff button, which are worn like an anklet on each bird.

This extraordinary item was in the Steiff line overall from 1932 thorough 1943; given the type of birds on the platform and the red ear tags, it is most probable that this specific example was made in 1934.  For more information on the Chirp Couple, click here.

It's time now to move on to another very springlike Teddy Dorado auction highlight - one that really enjoys just swaying in the breeze!  Here we have an amazingly rare Steiff lamb hanging pram toy.  The lamb itself standing, unjointed and is about 8.5 cm tall and 9 cm long.  His face, ears and legs are made from felt.  His legs are lined in wires for strength and poseability.  His sweet and tiny face is detailed with black button eyes and a simple pink hand embroidered nose and mouth.  He wears a tiny ribbon and bell.  Lamb is suspended from an elastic cord which is decorated with woolen pom-poms and finished with an ivory ring for hanging.  And no need to count sheep over this one - lamb is a rattle and also retains his button as his Steiff ID!

This woolie and wonderful pram toy was in the line from 1902 through 1917.  It is estimated that this piece was produced in the 1905 through 1909 time frame - although he looks like he's game for at least another century of fun and play!  In addition to this design, Steiff also made a few other lamb pram toys; these included one with just a lamb's head suspended from an elastic cord decorated with pom-poms (produced from 1904 through 1912) and a more elaborate one of a full lamb reclining on a felt covered ring suspended from ribbons (produced from 1916 through 1918.)  Like the lamb pram toy featured in the Teddy Dorado auction, each of these two other pram toys were finished with an ivory ring for hanging.  For more information on the lamb pram toy, click here.

So lets take a paws - however briefly - to check out this final moving marvel from the upcoming auction.  Could this just be the perfect pooch?  Here we have a stellar example of Steiff's Rattler Terrier with a tail moves head mechanism.  In terms of size, he measures about 19.5 cm tall (without his ears)  or 17.5 cm long (without his tail.) Rattler is sitting, head jointed, and firmly stuffed with excelsior.  He is made from mohair with grey highlights.  His charming and authentic beard and eyelashes are made from longer mohair with a tan/orange cast to it.  His face is detailed with lovely almond shaped tri-colored glass eyes and a black hand embroidered nose and mouth.  His belly squeaker and his tail moves head mechanism are in fine and working order - this is most unusual for an item over 75 years old!  Remarkably, Rattler retains his underscored button in ear, crisp and fully legible yellow ear tag (with a very cool H for "head mechanism" stamped on it), movement instruction tag on his tail, and large, colorful named chest tag as his Steiff IDs.

There's no need to give anyone a heads up that Rattler might win best of show at the upcoming Teddy Dorado event.  Overall, this blue-ribbon beauty was produced in 8, 10, 14, 17, 22, 25, 28, and 35 cm in the 1930 through 1943 time period.  Steiff produced a number of "tail moves head" items in the early 1930's, including other dogs, rabbits, and cats.  These items were produced as higher end "luxury" pieces; their internal mechanisms were designed to create a natural type of movement within the animal.  For more information on this Rattler, please click here.

Steiffgal hopes this video preview of Teddy Dorado auction highlights has been more fun than a Saturday movie matinee!  For more information on Teddy Dorado and their upcoming events and offerings, please click here!

Bif Bang Pow! has partnered with Zica Toys to produce a line of The Twilight Zone 3.75-inch retro action figures scheduled to ship around August. The figures use a style reminiscent of the old Kenner Star Wars figures, with most having around five points of articulation, and will be produced in black & white (the show's colors) to match Bif Bang Pow!'s popular 8-inch line of Twilight Zone figures although the selections will apparently appear in a limited edition color series.

The first characters featured in the line will be:

    • The meek book-loving Henry Bemis (portrayed by Burgess Meredith in "Time Enough at Last"; he would later go on to play the Devil in "The Printer's Devil" and the Penguin in the classic Batman tv show)
    • The nervous airline passenger Bob Wilson (portrayed by William Shatner (of Star Trek fame) in "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet")
    • The Gremlin (who hung on the wing of the plane in "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet")
    • Kanamit ("To Serve Man" which, by the way, is a cookbook)
    • An Invader (from "The Invaders" where tiny robots/aliens terrorize an old woman on a farm)
    • Talky Tina (that creepy-as-hell doll from "Living Doll")

The choices are somewhat interesting, as it's a mix of outlandish characters and humans, although the selection provides a nod to several of the show's most famous episodes (and, for that matter, most popular twist endings). A few of the figures come with accessories such as Kanamit with his (cook)book and Henry Bemis with a stack of books (unfortunately the glasses aren't removable...), and Bob Wilson with an optional pistol.

The Twilight Zone is widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time and would go on to spawn two reboots (a pretty good '80s version and a '00s one starring Forest Whitaker that some fans would like to forget) as well as a terrible movie. The original version with Rod Serling is still by far the most famous incarnation and its many iconic episodes have been spoofed in some form or another over the years.

The retro style seems like a nice fit, as it's the sort of collectible that could have been made for the show back when it first aired. These figures can be pre-ordered for US$10 each.

After the success of the three ITBE dolls released early this year (but presented to W Club members in late 2013), the experiment of releasing older sculpts in different bodies and skintones goes on. Integrity Toys informed the W Club members that four new dolls are to be available exclusively to them through a lottery for the right to buy. These will not be available to non club members in contrast to the previous release. Each doll is a 300 pieces edition. Let's see them all:

This AA Kyori comes dressed in a jacquard belted cocktail dress, with matching shoes and a doll stand. Fully articulated doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. For adult collectors ages 14 and up.She lis the original Kyori sculpt so I am falling for this one hard. Plus she's never had this skin-tone before (only Latina releases untl now). The dress is of course the Isha one in a different fabric. I like the fact that the shoes all these dolls wear are not the same as the previous release. And they look great too.

Janay is the very first Integrity sculpt, long before Fashion Royalty dolls were even a concept. So there is some sentimental value added to this particular release. She is dressed in a sassy red and black version of the pleated cocktail dress that Natalia was wearing the previous time in B&W. It includes belt, shoes and a doll stand. Fully articulated doll with rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. For adult collectors ages 14 and up. If one of the two previous dolls were not part of this wave, I might have tried my luck with this one even though I already have the dress too. The shoes look like they might be like wave 1 Adele's in red.

Chapter 11 has not yet been published, but thanks to iTunes we have a single page preview for Chapter 12, the self-titled Transformers: Dark Cybertron Finale. The preview is only one page to avoid revealing any ending-ruining spoilers for next week's issue of Robots in Disguise, and highlights a beautiful character bonding moment some were disappointed to see skipped in More Than Meets The Eye 27. Potential (albeit mild?) spoilers within!
