Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man revealed & on sale

Diamond Select Toys has officially announced a long-anticipated Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man will be a Disney Store (and Marvel.com) exclusive... and that it's currently available for order!

For those unfamiliar with the character, "Superior" isn't just another moniker for the web-slinger as the Superior Spider-Man isn't really Spider-Man at all... kinda. A while ago in the comics, long-time Spidey rogue Doctor Octopus swapped bodies with Peter Parker who then died in Doc Ock's body. The end result was that Otto Octavius now had Spider-Man's body and, plot conveniently enough, some of Spider-Man's morality so he wound up fighting crime as his once-hated nemesis, Spider-Man. Ah, comics!

Questions regarding "When are you planning on doing a MS Superior Spider-Man?" and "Are you doing a Superior Spider-Man figure?" have periodically popped up in DST's Q&As, but were never answered affirmatively (presumably because they were working something out with the Disney Store). However, just in time for a ghostly Peter Parker to reclaim his body* (that's right, PLOT TWIST!), DST has finally let the spider out of the bag on their Superior Spidey figure.

DST's Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man is billed as having 16 points of articulation and, at first glance, looked somewhat familiar but I believe it's a new sculpt. It's a decent enough figure albeit I'm not fond of the hand choices and, given that no alternate parts are mentioned, it seems like those are the only choice. The paint seen in the header and other Art Asylum blog photos is apparently of the prototype and the real version will apparently feature a glossier finish along the lines of Disney's photo. Otherwise, the MS Spectacular Spidey comes with a display base that's described as being the aftermath of a battle with the Sinister Six.

Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man can currently be ordered for US$25 exclusively from the Disney Store website and MarvelStore.com. Additionally, it will be appearing at Disney Stores across the country.

[ Order at DisneyStore.com | MarvelStore.com | or look for it at your local Disney Store ]

*EDITOR'S NOTE: It's not confirmed how it's happening or that Spectacular Spidey is even officially done (although Amazing is coming back), but Otto was seeing Peter's "ghost" earlier on in the comic and, quite frankly, it'd be the most amusing resolution. Otherwise maybe there'd just be another deal with Mephisto or something.

WHAT: I asked a select few folks how their 2013 was, and what should folks expect from them in 2014, and this is what they shared with TOYSREVIL…

LUKE CHUEH: 2013 was fun. I got to travel to Singapore and China, and I met a lot of amazing/talented people. The year ended with me feeling hopeful for 2014.

Tomopinion: Land of the Setting Sun

In the late 1950s, the then-prime minister of Britain, Harold Macmillan, gave a speech to the British people saying that “they never had it so good.” Back then, Britain was riding high on the post war economic boom so the economy was looking up, unemployment was down and generally, things were rosy (though it turned out to be a very fragile outlook). Fast forward to 2011, and some doofus adviser to the current PM used the same line to people who were in the middle of a global recession… Sufficed to say, his words didn’t go down so well.

Why am I bringing this up? Because the same line can be applied to the current state of the Japanese figure industry. The only question is whether we’re on the side of the 50s boom or the 2011 misstep? Well, you’ll be happy to know that it’s definitely closer to the 50s example but just as the boom back then was exceptionally fragile, our current situation with the Japanese figures is also very precarious. Or perhaps, we’ve already started falling down the dark path. I’m not saying that we’re going to go straight from boom to bust like many financial companies over the past few years but rather, we’re facing something far more insidious.

Stagnation.

Sydney Opera House recreated in Lego

Lego customizers are some of my favorite artists out there. The scope of their work can impress me like few other mediums. One such artist is Ryan McNaught, aka TheBrickMan. His most recent work is a cross-section of the Sydney Opera House. Taking over two years of failed builds and remodels, McNaught worked with fellow Lego master Erik Varszegi to work around the architectural difficulties of the Opera House.

It's an incredible bit of work and I suggest you check out the rest of his photos at his Flicker page. I really like the real world architecture line of Legos and this is in that wheel house. I love the little details, especially the inclusion of an audience. Little touches like that tickle me pink. Or yellow, in this case.

MGS 5 Play Arts Kai Quiet sneaks out for a preview

If you remember a couple of months back, Hideo Kojima let us in on some of the details for Quiet, a new character introduced in the latest installment of the franchise. I had my own quips as to his reasoning for the design, and he had some for my opinion. Now that his reasoning has an actual design, does this make for a better figure?

Well, the answer for me is no. We get to see what Play Arts Kai has for Quiet, and her design kind of makes it a worse figure for me. PAK hasn't exactly had a track record with skimpy outfits, with the only one really coming to mind being the Wonder Woman variant, and that's even a bit of a stretch. I'm not too keen with how the outfit was done, but they did get the details of it right. Even the knee joints feature the tears from the outfit. However, even with such details, it isn't enough for me.

Looking at the package here, I'll ultimately decide on whether or not I like the character. The design of Quiet, as is, is overplayed. If I wanted bikini chicks with guns, there's YouTube and magazines from the 80s for that, not to mention much better looking figures for this sort of thing. The figure with the design isn't appealing enough to get it. Kojima said that he chose this design to sell figures. He put himself in a position where I have to judge it based on looks first and that's not what you want for a medium and game built upon story. Based on this first entry though, I would say he's failed in that regard. Maybe her character can make up for it.
