Diamond Select Toys has officially announced a long-anticipated Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man will be a Disney Store (and Marvel.com) exclusive... and that it's currently available for order!
For those unfamiliar with the character, "Superior" isn't just another moniker for the web-slinger as the Superior Spider-Man isn't really Spider-Man at all... kinda. A while ago in the comics, long-time Spidey rogue Doctor Octopus swapped bodies with Peter Parker who then died in Doc Ock's body. The end result was that Otto Octavius now had Spider-Man's body and, plot conveniently enough, some of Spider-Man's morality so he wound up fighting crime as his once-hated nemesis, Spider-Man. Ah, comics!
Questions regarding "When are you planning on doing a MS Superior Spider-Man?" and "Are you doing a Superior Spider-Man figure?" have periodically popped up in DST's Q&As, but were never answered affirmatively (presumably because they were working something out with the Disney Store). However, just in time for a ghostly Peter Parker to reclaim his body* (that's right, PLOT TWIST!), DST has finally let the spider out of the bag on their Superior Spidey figure.
DST's Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man is billed as having 16 points of articulation and, at first glance, looked somewhat familiar but I believe it's a new sculpt. It's a decent enough figure albeit I'm not fond of the hand choices and, given that no alternate parts are mentioned, it seems like those are the only choice. The paint seen in the header and other Art Asylum blog photos is apparently of the prototype and the real version will apparently feature a glossier finish along the lines of Disney's photo. Otherwise, the MS Spectacular Spidey comes with a display base that's described as being the aftermath of a battle with the Sinister Six.
Marvel Select Superior Spider-Man can currently be ordered for US$25 exclusively from the Disney Store website and MarvelStore.com. Additionally, it will be appearing at Disney Stores across the country.
[ Order at DisneyStore.com | MarvelStore.com | or look for it at your local Disney Store ]
*EDITOR'S NOTE: It's not confirmed how it's happening or that Spectacular Spidey is even officially done (although Amazing is coming back), but Otto was seeing Peter's "ghost" earlier on in the comic and, quite frankly, it'd be the most amusing resolution. Otherwise maybe there'd just be another deal with Mephisto or something.
