Indie Comic Roundup
Yo.
Third volume of this indie comic book roundup here on ALBOTAS, in which I make a big list of links involving those indie comic folks who make cool stuff and articles, images, and video revolving around said dudes.
This week, I’ve got small tidbits on some cool comic covers (like above), Michael DeForge, a couple of reviews by yours truly via Drawn Words, Matt Fraction, and I’ll be talking about some upcoming stuff you should be paying attention to in the world of smaller pubs and artists. Read more, peep it below.
- This week on Drawn Words, I got a chance to review a title by Charles Forsman called The End of the Fucking World. Incredible and dark stuff, I promise ya. Read the review here.
- That’s all I’ve reviewed this week. It’s been a busy week!
- Fantagraphics revealed that The End of the Fucking World is actually becoming a live-action series. It’s production has already started. From the looks of things, it’s shaping to be a cool show.
- Hey guys, Trillium #2 comes out this week from DC Vertigo. Don’t be a loser — remember to pick it up!
- ComiXology debuted it’s Digital Storefront program. Local comic book shops can now get an official cut of digital sales profit directly from ComiXology.
- Boom! Studios revealed some fucking awesome comic covers for two comics I’d never be interested in reading: Garfield and Robocop. 8-Bit artist Matthew Waite did the Robocop cover and Natasha Allegri did the Garfield cover. The covers are exclusive to Baltimore Comic Con. If you’re lucky enough to get out there, definitely grab these from the Boom! Studios booth.
- In other news, John Martz drew a shark wearing a party hat within the last week.
- It’s September and Matt Fraction, the terrific man responsible for the current run of Hawkeye, has a new comic book rolling out real soon. In less than three weeks (September 25), Image is readying to release Sex Criminals, a comic book about people who can stop time by having orgams. Wow, right? Read this interview with Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky about the comic from Comics Alliance.
- All SPX programming has been revealed! Check the totally rad schedule.
- Here’s a list of small press releases from The Comics Journal.
- Inkstuds talked to Jeff Smith about his new books. It’s an hour long audio clip and interview.
- Michael DeForge drew Skips from Regular Show. Fantastic. So him.
- Read DeForge’s Contributor Copy. It’s fantastic. Free.
- This short by Nathan Bulmer is hilarious, like most of his work.
- Dan Zettwoch posted these sketches from his visit to Punta Mita, Mexico. So dreamy!
- Read this comic by Pat Grant called Toormina Video. Bold and interesting combination of coloring, it’s an amazing autobiography comic. You have time, read it now.
- Bryan Lee O’ Malley revealed a full-color hardcover edition of Lost at Sea, the first comic book he’s ever done (yes, before Scott Pilgrim). No details yet, but it’s to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the title.
As always, you can contact me at kevin@drawnwords.com and send me an email. We can exchange letters and you can perhaps send me a copy of your comic book to review. Or just shoot the shit — I love emails either way!
Until next week.

Sorceress of Dragon's Crown has her pre-orders revived
Last month, Alpha Max opened its pre-orders for its rendition of the Sorceress from Dragon's Crown. The figure was controversial to its design, and out of nowhere, was pulled from pre-orders. Now the Sorceress has been summoned once more for pre-orders, but with a change, but not the one you probably thought was coming.
If you were thinking that they would change the outrageous size of her breasts, think again. Instead, her face has been corrected. Gone is the model-like, "What has become of my life?" expression and has been replaced with a deer in the headlights look. This of course makes a great combination with her pulling up on the sides of her already short dress.
What could have very easily been a great figure for its audience has instead been fixed twice, yet doesn't feel like it's right at all. There's a ton of things that Alpha Max could have fixed here, but the new face doesn't exactly scream "BUY IT NOW!" If you are so inclined though, the Sorceress of Dragon's Crown will be available in March of 2014 for ¥11,800. Maybe they can fix some more things in the time they have.

Fisher-Price Peppa and Family
Fisher-Price Peppa and Family
Fisher-Price Peppa and Family - I discovered Peppa Pig by accident one day and loved it was a sweet, simple, happy show that wasn't in-your-face and manic and wild like so many are. I showed my then-2 year old and he LOVED it! He lays on the floor and laughs with them and jumps up and down when they jump in the puddles. I saw these and ordered them for his birthday. He was SO happy. He makes them jump, he makes them roll and laugh, and I'm he has a toy animal family he loves to play with, which is a nice change from trucks, etc. There's no reason this can't be a "boy toy" too! He's a very happy little guy with Peppa Pig and fam :) -- By C. LopezFisher-Price Peppa and Family - Have some family fun time with the Fisher-Price Peppa Pig 4-Pack Family Figures.
